July 2003: 62-year-old female with progressive muscular weakness

The July 2003 Case of the Month (COM). A 62-year-old female patient experienced progressive muscular weakness over the last ten years, involving shoulder and pelvic girdle muscles, paraspinal and facial muscles. A biopsy was taken from the left deltoid muscle where hepatitis vaccination had taken place 4 weeks previously. The specimen revealed macrophagic myofasciitis due to the injection of aluminium-bound vaccines. The finding can be reproduced experimentally by injecting vaccines in rats. The pathomechanism is supposed to involve immune stimulation due to long term persistence of the adjuvant. Crystalloid lysozyme inclusions in Paneth cells of vitamin A-deficient rats.

The effect of vitamin A-deficiency on jejunal Paneth cells in rats was investigated. Crystalloid particles were observed in secretion granules of Paneth cells from 6 out of 8 rats with vitamin A-deficiency. The particles were similar to those found in Paneth cells under other experimental conditions. Using an immuno-electron-microscopic technique we demonstrated a clear lysozyme immunoreactivity of these particles. In 2 vitamin A-deficient rats tubular structures have been detected in addition to the crystalloid particles. Physiologic and biologic mechanisms induced in Yarrowia lipolytica in response to physico-chemical modifications of cells environment

Hydrophobe compounds are known as carbon source which could be used by yeast like Yarrowia lipolytica for multi purposes. These compounds may cause disturbance in yeast but also reported as confer some resistance to cells towards environmental stress. Here, we study the role of methyl oleate as carbon source on resistance of Y. lipolytica in response to stress of an amphiphilic compound, -dodecalactone, and to heat shock. Results show that cells grown in oleate are more resistant to these stresses than cells grown in glucose. Neurobiological Models of the Central Complex and the Mushroom Bodies

This study reviews the actual knowledge on functions of the central complex (CX) and the mushroom bodies (MBs) in a genetic model insect, the fly Drosophila melanogaster. Ongoing research of UNIMAINZ and respective data are included. Reference is made to other insects, where respective functions are not yet studied in Drosophila. Neuroanatomical information is reported with regard to the general flow of information in these central brain neuropils. Particular projection systems and circuits are taken into account where this can be linked to functions. Models are developed.

The training and development of young players both as athletes and individuals is one of the task soccer governing bodies assign to professional soccer team in order to fully exploit the social aspects of sport activities. Recently UEFA imposed new rules to improve the use of home-grown players. We analyze a panel data of English Premier and Championship league clubs for the seasons 2001-02 to 2005-06 in order to understand what clubs characteristics lead to the employment of young players in the team during official matches. Cancer cells have means to influence other cells in their vicinity and distant, and in this signal-delivering mechanisms the chaperonin Hsp60 plays a role, which is currently being recognized as potentially crucial for the growth and dissemination of at least certain types of tumors. In order to arrive at its destination, Hsp60, a typical resident of mitochondria in normal and tumor cells, leaves the organelle and reaches the blood. Jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) is a deep hibernating rodent native to subdesert highlands. During hibernation, a high level of ketone bodies i.e. acetoacetate (AcAc) and D-3-hydroxybutyrate (BOH) are produced in liver, which are used in brain as energetic fuel. These compounds are bioconverted by mitochondrial D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) E.C. 1.1.1.30. Here we report, the function and the expression of BDH in terms of catalytic activities, kinetic parameters, levels of protein and mRNA in both tissues i.e brain and liver, in relation to the hibernating process. Production of soluble eukaryotic recombinant proteins in E. coli is favoured in early log-phase cultures induced at low temperature

Abstract Background Producing recombinant plant proteins expressed in Escherichia coli produce in high yields and in a soluble and functional form can be difficult. Under overexpression conditions, proteins frequently accumulate as insoluble aggregates (inclusion bodies) within the producing bacteria. We evaluated how the initial culture density, temperature and duration of the expression stage affect the production of some eukaryotic enzymes in E. coli. Findings A high yield of active soluble proteins was obtained by combining early-log phase cultures and low temperatures for protein induction. Uncontrolled growth, one of the fundamental properties of malignant tumors, requires a great supply of energy. This energy can be derived from the use of a variety of substrates. Besides glucose oxidation and glucose breakdown to lactic acid, the turnover of endogeneous substrates such as amino acids, free fatty acids and ketone bodies is well documented in vitro. However, under in vivo conditions, only glucose utilization has been investigated in detail, using tumor isotransplants in rodents. For human tumors, only scarce data is available, derived mainly from clinical observations rather than from systematic studies.
