Sea Urchin Granuloma
2005
Sea urchin granuloma is a chronic focal response to the puncture of sea urchin spines, induced by the permanence of prickle remnants in the wound. Until recent years, it was thought to represent a foreign body reaction but, following the description, in 2001, of its several histologic forms, the spectrum of its likely pathogenetic mechanisms has widened to include the immune responses to different non-self antigens. Depending on individual reactivity, in most cases, a limited number of granulomas is observed, however numerous the punctures may be. We report a case with more than 200 lesions and a tuberculoid histologic pattern, indicative of an immune reaction.

Dynamical stability of a many-body Kapitza pendulum
2015
We consider a many-body generalization of the Kapitza pendulum: the periodically-driven sine-Gordon model. We show that this interacting system is dynamically stable to periodic drives with finite frequency and amplitude. This finding is in contrast to the common belief that periodically-driven unbounded interacting systems should always tend to an absorbing infinite-temperature state. The transition to an unstable absorbing state is described by a change in the sign of the kinetic term in the effective Floquet Hamiltonian and controlled by the short-wavelength degrees of freedom. We investigate the stability phase diagram through an analytic high-frequency expansion, a self-consistent vari…
The Bias toward the Right Side of Others Is Stronger for Hands than for Feet
2021
As shown by a series of previous studies, ambiguous human bodies performing unimanual or unipedal actions tend to be perceived more frequently as right-handed or right-footed rather than left-handed or left-footed, which indicates a perceptual and attentional bias toward the right side of others&rsquo

The essay proposes a reflection on the discourse around "frugality" from the perspective of Cultural Geography, taking into…
A new species ofAnadrymadusaKarabağ (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) from Al Mujeb Nature Reserve, Jordan
2000
Abstract Anadrymadusa jordanica n. sp. from Jordan is described from one female specimen; it has elytra fully developed, longer than the whole body, a bi-concave ventral plate, between 7th sternite and subgenital plate, just longer than subgenital plate and showing a large median keel; the subgenital plate is as long as wide, with lobes with obtuse apical edge and a deep subacute excision.
Ofd1, a Human Disease Gene, Regulates the Length and Distal Structure of Centrioles
2010
SUMMARYCentrosomes and their component centrioles represent the principal microtubule organizing centers of animal cells. Here we show that the gene underlying Orofaciodigital Syndrome 1, Ofd1, is a component of the distal centriole that controls centriole length. In the absence of Ofd1, distal regions of centrioles, but not procentrioles, elongate abnormally. These long centrioles are structurally similar to normal centrioles, but contain destabilized microtubules with abnormal post-translational modifications. Ofd1 is also important for centriole distal appendage formation and centriolar recruitment of the intraflagellar transport protein Ift88. To model OFD1 Syndrome in embryonic stem ce…
Reversible MRI abnormalities in an unusual paediatric presentation of Wernicke's encephalopathy
1999
Background. We report an unusual paediatric presentation of acute Wernicke's encephalopathy in a 12-year-old boy affected by chronic gastrointestinal disease. MRI demonstrated, in addition to the typical diencephalic and mesencephalic signal abnormalities on T2-weighted images, enhancement of the mammillary bodies and the floor of the hypothalamus. Materials and methods. Following parenteral administration of thiamine for 4 days, the patient recovered from his neurological deficits and on follow-up enhanced MRI 1 month later, no signal abnormalities were found nor was there diencephalic or mesencephalic atrophy, as is usual in the chronic phase of the disease. Results. MRI provides crucial …
