Effects of chronic airway disease on health status of geriatric patients.

2004

Background and aims: The impact of chronic airway disease on the health status of elderly patients is only to some extent explained by indexes of airflow limitation. The present study was designed to assess to what extent: 1) asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis with normal FEV1 (simple bronchitis) differ in their impact on health status; 2) health status depends upon non-respiratory factors. Methods: A total of 1601 outpatients over 65 - 198 with asthma, 228 with COPD, 91 with simple bronchitis, and 1084 with non-respiratory illnesses (control group) -were studied by collection of five health status indexes and multidimensional assessment. Discriminan…

Isolating the climate change impacts on air-pollution-related-pathologies over central and southern Europe – a modelling approach on cases and costs

2019

Air pollution has important implications for human health and associated external costs to society and is closely related to climate change. This contribution tries to assess the impacts of present (1996-2015) and future (2071-2100 under RCP8.5) air pollution on several cardiovascular and respiratory pathologies and estimate the difference in the costs associated with these health impacts on the European population. For this, air quality data from the regional chemistry-climate modelling system of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) are used, together with some epidemiological information from the European Commission. The methodology considered…

Nuove varianti di Bronchite Infettiva negli allevamenti avicoli siciliani

2013

Avian Infectious Bronchitis (IB) is a disease caused by a Coronavirus, included in Coronaviridae family. The disease, endemic in Italy, affects both broilers and laying hens. It represents one of the main health issue in sicilian poultry farms. The presence of new antigenic variants makes problematic the implementation of an adequate prophylaxis through the use of appropriate vaccines. The present work aims to study the spread of IB strains in Sicily by serological and biomolecular tests in order to investigate the presence of "historical" strains as well as new strains and to carry out the genotyping of viruses isolated. The serological results show that the used vaccination protocols are …

Relationship status and respiratory diseases: an analysis on a general population sample

2021

Background: Very few studies have examined whether marital/relationship status affects respiratory diseases. Objective: Assess the association of relationship status (Rstatus: domestic partnership/civil union/marriage, cohabitation with non-partners, being single) with current (CA) and past asthma (PA), allergic (AR) and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR), and chronic bronchitis (CB). Methods: Data were collected in the frame of GEIRD, a population-based, multicase-control survey. Among 2531 subjects (age 21–86, female 50%) who underwent standardized interviews, skin prick and lung function tests, 575 cases of CA, 268 cases of PA, 968 cases of AR, 462 cases of NAR, 265 cases of CB without airflow …

Salbutamol Transport and Deposition in the Upper and Lower Airway with Different Devices in Cats: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Approach

2021

Simple Summary Administration of inhaled salbutamol via metered-dose inhalers can effectively treat bronchoconstriction. Different devices are used for the delivery of this drug in cats, either in the hospital or at home, for long-term treatment. Effective drug administration may depend on the drug delivery device as well as patient cooperation. By using non-invasive computational fluid dynamics techniques, the impact of these devices on the deposition and transport of salbutamol particles in the cat airways was simulated and assessed. The results confirm a variable drug distribution depending on the device used. The percentage of particles reaching the lung was reduced when using spacers a…

The Lung in Inflammatory Bowel Disease†

1993

Respiratory involvement in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported mainly since 1976. This form of involvement should clearly be separated from interstitial lung disease due to sulfasalazine or mesalamine, although the distinction may be difficult in some cases. We report the data of an ongoing Registry containing 33 cases (23 cases receiving no drug therapy) with ulcerative colitis or, less often, Crohn's disease, who developed varied bronchopulmonary problems. In several cases, the exact diagnosis and the relation of the bronchopulmonary disease to IBD had not been established for many years, thus delaying effective treatment with steroids. In most cases (28/33), …

MRI of the pulmonary parenchyma.

1999

Imaging of the pulmonary parenchyma represents a unique challenge for MRI. Limited signal is caused by low proton density, susceptibility artifacts, and physiological motion (cardiac pulsation, respiration). Recently, further improvements in MRI techniques have widened the potential for investigations of pulmonary parenchymal disease. These include very short echo times, ultrafast turbo-spin-echo acquisitions, projection reconstruction technique, breathhold imaging, ECG triggering, contrast agents (perfusion imaging, aerosols), sodium imaging, hyperpolarized noble gas imaging, and oxygen enhancement. By using widely available techniques, MRI is helpful in the assessment of (a) acute alveoli…

Noninvasive methods for the detection of upper and lower airway inflammation in atopic children

2006

Background Exhaled nitric oxide (FE NO ) and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) are noninvasive methods to assess inflammation. Objective To investigate the role of the FE NO and of the EBC pH and IL-5 levels in atopic children. Methods We evaluated oral and nasal FE NO and the pH and IL-5 of oral and nasal EBC in children with atopic dermatitis (AD; n=18), allergic rhinitis (AR; n=18), intermittent asthma (n = 21), moderate persistent asthma (n = 18), and healthy controls (HCs; n=16). Results Oral FE NO was significantly increased in asthma, whereas the nasal values were increased in AR and asthma in comparison with HCs. The pH of oral EBC was lower in AD and asthma than in AR and HCs, wherea…
