Computational Rationality as a Theory of Interaction

2022

Funding Information: This work was funded by the Finnish Center for AI and Academy of Finland (“BAD” and “Human Automata”). We thank our reviewers, Xiuli Chen, Joerg Mueller, Christian Guckelsberger, Sebastiaan de Peuter, Samuel Kaski, Pierre-Alexandre Murena, Antti Keuru-lainen, Suyog Chandramouli, and Roderick Murray-Smith for their comments. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 ACM. How do people interact with computers? This fundamental question was asked by Card, Moran, and Newell in 1983 with a proposition to frame it as a question about human cognition - in other words, as a matter of how information is processed in the mind. Recently, the question has been reframed as one of adaptation: how …

Conception de documents numériques : Parcours méthodologique

2009

There is a strong social demand for studies of digital document. Yet our models of society and education are struggling to integrate issues related to these types of documents. However, the subject is less than half a century old, and so it is hardly surprising that the writing and training practices are just being developed. Like the book, the digital document involves many different skills and techniques in its development. The list of jobs tends to grow steadily: ergonomists, referencing specialists, information architects, programmers, designers, integrators ... It is therefore difficult to have a global view on all this know-how and the related methodologies. This special edition seeks…

summary — The modern mummies and the inner meaning of the double burial in Mediterranean cultures have long been debated. In this paper we discuss a particular “collection” of ecclesiastical bodies mummifed and displayed in a small mountain town of Sicily Gangi in the Madonie Mountains. The bodies dating back to the nineteenth century mummifed by pouring in the tradition of the time and carefully dressed in robes are exposed in the lower foor of the Chiesa Madre in what the tradition is called “fossa dei parrini” (pit of priests). The mummies unlike other Sicilian and Mediterranean sites are accompanied by commemorative sonnet and death mask made of fnish wax. The primary interest of our study was aimed specifcally at this particular manifestation of the double burial complex which lies in the representation of the face. The work expresses an examination of the concept of death mask in antiquity and leads to the conclusion that the place for its scenic values ritualization should be designed to the ostentation and the consolidation of the image of the Church and of the his power within the small rural society.Settore BIO/08 - Antropologia

Einstein Versus Neutrinos

2013

This article focuses on the news coverage given to the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) announcement that neutrinos might exceed the speed of light, flying in the face of Albert Einstein’s theory. By studying 140 cartoons about the news item published between the CERN’s announcement at the end of September 2011 up until its refutation in February 2012, we selected 33 devoted to Albert Einstein. We study the iconographic use of Einstein’s figure, and how the suggestion he might have been wrong stirred up greater interest among the cartoonists than when it was proven his ideas are still fully in force.

Passing the test of motherhood? Self‐esteem development and birth experience in the transition to motherhood : A longitudinal mixed methods study in …

2022

Aims To investigate women's childbirth experiences and their relation to self-esteem development in the postpartum year. Design A mixed methods study. Methods Women (N = 125) completed survey questionnaires regarding their self-esteem and childbirth experiences at three time points in 2020–2021: third trimester of pregnancy (T1), 4–8 weeks postpartum (T2) and 1 year postpartum (T3). The survey results were analysed using qualitative thematic and quantitative path analyses with latent change factors. The open-ended answers of the women who demonstrated a change in self-esteem between T2 and T3 were then compared. The STROBE checklist was used as the reporting guideline. Results The quantitat…

Enhancing the experience of online users of open education

2014

The limited adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) has kicked off the launch of several projects to search for possible solutions. One of these projects is “Open Educational Ideas and Innovations” (OEI2). The goal of this project is to find alternatives for increasing the uptake of OER and facilitating the collaborative development of OER. To enhance the experience of the users of open education, we interviewed twelve educators and researchers from different higher education institutions across Europe focusing on gathering insights about idea sharing experiences. In this paper, we present our key findings based on these interviews and outline some recommendations for our next open edu…

Three Halves of a Whole : Redefining East and West in UNESCO’s East-West Major Project 1957-1966

2017

In 1946 Julian Huxley, UNESCO’s rst Director-General, suggested that two opposing philosophies of life were confronting each other from the East and the West, setting the focus on the cultural aspect of this polarisation and de ning the possibility of an East- West conflict as the main threat to world peace. A decade later, in 1957, UNESCO launched The Major Project on the Mutual Appreciation of Eastern and Western Cultural Values to promote its ideas of intercultural understanding as a means to maintaining peace. The core concepts of the Project, East and West, were not strictly defined. Here East and West, as concepts, fit Reinhart Koselleck’s definition of Grundbegri…

Does Finland Need Raciolinguistics?

2017

A growing number of applied linguists and language educators in the US/North American context advocate for and from a scholarly perspective which views language issues in relation to racial issues and vice versa. The emergent field of raciolinguistics highlights the relationships between language and race/racism and has brought about research that investigates their intersections. Should scholars in Finland adopt (and adapt) such an approach to scholarly work? Three Finland-based scholars explore this question in a question ("prompt") - response format.
