An AC-assisted single-nanowire electromechanical switch

2013

A unique two-source controlled nanoelectromechanical switch has been assembled from individual, single-clamped Ge nanowires. The switching behaviour was achieved by superimposing the control signals of specific frequencies to the electrostatic potential of the output terminals, eliminating the need for an additional gate electrode. Using an in situ manipulation technique inside a scanning electron microscope, we demonstrate that the pull-out force required to overcome adhesion at the contact can be significantly reduced by exciting mechanical resonant modes within the nanowire.

In this article the fi rst results of the performance analysis of the photovoltaic glassblock are given. The photovoltaic glassblock is an innovative product which integrates third generation solar cells (DSSC) invented for the construction of translucent building envelopes energetically effi cient and “active” able to reduce the energy consumption in buildings and to produce at the same time green energy. The analysis was conducted on four different hypotheses of integration through numerical simulations in order to evaluate the energy absorption and the optical performance of the device. The software simulations represent a fi rst step for the understanding of the performance of the element and prelude to an experimental analysis session. The results of a research conducted about national and international patents publications on the DSSC technology and its applications will be illustrated too. The data collected during this research had been organized in a digital database.Settore ICAR/10 - Architettura Tecnica

The Role of the Exchange Rate Regime in the Process of Real and Nominal Convergence

2013

During the last decade, economists have intensively searched for evidence on the importance of the Balassa-Samuelson (B-S) hypothesis in explaining nominal convergence. One general result is that B-S can at best explain only part of the excess inflation observed in the European catching-up countries, which suggests that other factors may be at play. In these and related studies, however, the potential role of the exchange rate regime in affecting price convergence in Europe has been overlooked. In this respect, we claim that the choice of the exchange rate regime has decisively affected the path of nominal convergence. To show this, we first model the (endogenous) choice of the exchange rat…

Information Dynamics of the Brain, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Network during Different Levels of Mental Stress

2019

In this study, an analysis of brain, cardiovascular and respiratory dynamics was conducted combining information-theoretic measures with the Network Physiology paradigm during different levels of mental stress. Starting from low invasive recordings of electroencephalographic, electrocardiographic, respiratory, and blood volume pulse signals, the dynamical activity of seven physiological systems was probed with one-second time resolution measuring the time series of the &delta

Computational imaging with a balanced detector

2016

Single-pixel cameras allow to obtain images in a wide range of challenging scenarios, including broad regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and through scattering media. However, there still exist several drawbacks that single-pixel architectures must address, such as acquisition speed and imaging in the presence of ambient light. In this work we introduce balanced detection in combination with simultaneous complementary illumination in a single-pixel camera. This approach enables to acquire information even when the power of the parasite signal is higher than the signal itself. Furthermore, this novel detection scheme increases both the frame rate and the signal-to-noise ratio of the sys…

Gamificación en la universidad: una experiencia basada en el “bring your own device” en educación superior

2016

[EN] Technological development offers several new opportunities to improve the quality of teaching. Under the ongoing task as a teachers of motivating and teaching how to learn to our students, we present the results of a session that consisted of two gamificated and groupal activities (quiz format) and a single self-assessment, based all of them on the use of their own electronic enabled devices (bring your own device). This implies an enriching, fun and practical experience to approach the course, and it provided interesting feedback to continue implementing new technologies at the university.

Estudio interuniversitario en estudiantes de Ciencias de la Salud: uso de los dispositivos móviles con fines educativos

2021

[EN] The use of smartphones, despite being mainly social, has begun to be implemented in the university environment as a tool for working in class and for communication between students regarding teaching material. However, before creating teaching methodologies that use these devices, it is important to know the opinion that the students have of them. Our objective was to analyze the personal and academic use of Smartphones by Health Sciences students from different Universities. With this objective, a form was created consisting of sociodemographic questions and the Questionnaire on perceptions and attitudes towards learning through mobile devices (CPAAM). Subsequently, a descriptive anal…

Self-Immolative Linkers as Caps for the Design of Gated Silica Mesoporous Supports

2016

A new hybrid material based on sulforhodamine-B dye-loaded silica mesoporous nanoparticles capped with a self-immolative gate has been synthesized and characterized. The gated material's controlled release behavior is monitored under different pH conditions. Under acidic and neutral conditions, a low level of dye release is detected. However, at slightly basic pH, significant dye release occurs owing to deprotonation of the phenol moiety in the capping molecule, which results in its disassembly.

Learning Content Development methodology for Mobile Devices

2015

Abstract Mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular; basically mobile devices are reaching all levels of society. Thanks to the popularity of mobile devices, mobile learning has become great tool for delivering educational resources. The continuously increasing demand for mobile technology based learning materials, renders adoption of educational resources for these requirements. Technology by itself does not contribute much to education that is why the aim of this research is to present and evaluate methodology for visualisation and production of electronic materials in mobile environments. Methodology focuses on instructional design and mobile content design and the navigation contr…

Orthoscopic long-focal-depth 3D integral imaging

2006

Integral imaging systems are imaging devices that provide 3D images of 3D objects. When integral imaging systems work in their standard configuration the provided reconstructed images are pseudoscopic; that is, are reversed in depth. In this paper we present, a technique for formation of real, undistorted, orthoscopic integral images by direct pickup. The technique is based on the use of a proper relay system and a global mapping of pixels of the elemental-images set. Simulated imaging experiments are presented to support our proposal.
