Autonomy and Workload in Relation to Temporary and Permanent Workers’ Job Involvement

2010

The aim of the study was to investigate contract type (temporary vs. permanent employment) as a possible moderator in the relationship between autonomy and workload on the one hand, and job involvement on the other hand in samples from two countries: Belgium and Finland. The results on possible interactions were similar in the two countries. Contract type moderated the relationship between autonomy and job involvement: The relationship was stronger in permanent than in temporary workers. No moderation was found for workload. Instead, workload associated positively with job involvement in both temporary and permanent workers. These findings are discussed with reference to the activation hyp…

Self-esteem during university studies predicts career characteristics 10 years later

2007

Abstract To examine how self-esteem measured during university studies would impact on the characteristics of the work career 10 years later, 297 university students completed the Rosenberg’s self-esteem inventory four times while at university and various career-related questionnaires 10 years later. Latent Growth Curve Modeling showed that a high overall level of self-esteem predicted being in permanent employment 10 years later, having a high salary, and reporting a high level of work engagement, and job satisfaction, and a low level of burnout. By contrast, low self-esteem predicted unemployment, feelings of exhaustion, cynicism and reduced accomplishment at work, and low levels of work…

What you see is what you get? Measuring companies' projected employer image attributes via companies' employment webpages

2021

Information on a company's employment webpage sends signals about the employer image the company intends to project to applicants. Nonetheless, we know little about the content of recruitment signals sent via company employment webpages. This study develops a method to measure companies’ projected employer image attributes based on their employment webpages. Specifically, we analyze companies’ projected employer image attributes by applying computer‐aided text analysis (CATA) to the employment webpages of 461 Fortune 500 companies (i.e., more than 11,100 individual pages). Our results show that projected employer image attributes remain relatively stable over time. Moreover, we find relativ…

Precarious work and social protection: between flexicurity and social pollution

2019

The chapter explores the possibility of changing the way in which any social and legal system guarantees social protections for the weakest workers. To do so it elaborates a unique functional set for classifying all kind of precariat, which it names the ‘un[der]-protected workers’. The issue of the precariat is held as an imbalance in the flexicurity balance, considered akin to pollution in the social environment: so-called social pollution. The proposed method to counterbalance the lack of security/protection and rebalance flexicurity is a ‘(non-wage) Social Security (virtual or) Fake (Pigouvian) Tax’ (the SSFT). The idea is that this device either forces companies to hire through SERs (wh…

The vocationalisation of university programmes in France: its consequences for employability and mobility

2011

In the last three decades, French Universities have offered an increasing number of vocational programmes. More recently, the introduction of vocational Bachelors in 1999 was designed to extend the 'vocationalisation' of French Universities at the Bachelor Level. Using a French follow-up survey on transition from school/ university to work, called "Génération 2004", our paper show that vocational higher education graduates from 2004 cohort entered the labour market in better conditions than their predecessors (from 2010 cohort). In addition, compared with graduates from shorter higher education courses, job opportunities for vocational Bachelor graduates tended to be more stable and better …

Turning the tide: Registered nurses' job withdrawal intentions in a Finnish university hospital

2012

Orientation: Given the global shortage of registered nurses, it is important to investigate the intentions for job withdrawal of nurses, and resolve these, in order to retain nurses in the field. Research purpose: The objective was to examine the intentions for job withdrawal of ageing and younger nurses, and the antecedents of these intentions, with special reference to job control and perceived development opportunities. The age of 45 was adopted as a starting point when referring to ageing employees. Motivation for the study: Different forms of job withdrawal have rarely been studied together and associated. Research design, approach and method: A quantitative study was applied with logi…

Protocol: Literature review on the psychometric properties of the short versions of the scales of social desirability in the answers to competency se…

2018

[EN] Research in business organization in general and talent management (in university or professional students) uses in many cases self-administered questionnaires as a source of data to assess people's competencies. In clinical psychology, it has been shown that self-evaluations of behaviors may present a bias of social desirability. However, even in this field of research it is not usual to measure its effect when taking data. Our work proposes a protocol to find a set of scales of social desirability (SD) with less than 20 items that are valid and reliable. We also intend to identify if SD scales are associated with the self-assessments of some transversal competences.

Internet-Based Employer Search and Vacancy Duration: Evidence from Finland

2014

This study investigates the effect of the introduction of the public employment agency's Internet-based service on the duration of employer search. The analysis exploits the introduction of a web-based service by the Finnish Employment Agency in October 2002. The results, based on information on job vacancies announced via the public employment agency between 2002 and 2003, indicate that the introduction of the web service, in general, shortened the duration of employer search. However, we find that the introduction of the web-based service shortened the average duration of vacancies in some regions but not in others. In addition, employers in urban areas were more likely to benefit from th…
