X-ray Tomography of One-forms with Partial Data

2021

If the integrals of a one-form over all lines meeting a small open set vanish and the form is closed in this set, then the one-form is exact in the whole Euclidean space. We obtain a unique continuation result for the normal operator of the X-ray transform of one-forms, and this leads to one of our two proofs of the partial data result. Our proofs apply to compactly supported covector-valued distributions.

The Riemannian manifold of all Riemannian metrics

1991

In this paper we study the geometry of (M, G) by using the ideas developed in [Michor, 1980]. With that differentiable structure on M it is possible to use variational principles and so we start in section 2 by computing geodesics as the curves in M minimizing the energy functional. From the geodesic equation, the covariant derivative of the Levi-Civita connection can be obtained, and that provides a direct method for computing the curvature of the manifold. Christoffel symbol and curvature turn out to be pointwise in M and so, although the mappings involved in the definition of the Ricci tensor and the scalar curvature have no trace, in our case we can define the concepts of ”Ricci like cu…

Approximation by mappings with singular Hessian minors

2018

Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n$ be a Lipschitz domain. Given $1\leq p<k\leq n$ and any $u\in W^{2,p}(\Omega)$ belonging to the little H\"older class $c^{1,\alpha}$, we construct a sequence $u_j$ in the same space with $\operatorname{rank}D^2u_j<k$ almost everywhere such that $u_j\to u$ in $C^{1,\alpha}$ and weakly in $W^{2,p}$. This result is in strong contrast with known regularity behavior of functions in $W^{2,p}$, $p\geq k$, satisfying the same rank inequality.

Polynomial and horizontally polynomial functions on Lie groups

2022

We generalize both the notion of polynomial functions on Lie groups and the notion of horizontally affine maps on Carnot groups. We fix a subset $S$ of the algebra $\mathfrak g$ of left-invariant vector fields on a Lie group $\mathbb G$ and we assume that $S$ Lie generates $\mathfrak g$. We say that a function $f:\mathbb G\to \mathbb R$ (or more generally a distribution on $\mathbb G$) is $S$-polynomial if for all $X\in S$ there exists $k\in \mathbb N$ such that the iterated derivative $X^k f$ is zero in the sense of distributions. First, we show that all $S$-polynomial functions (as well as distributions) are represented by analytic functions and, if the exponent $k$ in the previous defini…

Tensor tomography in periodic slabs

2017

The X-ray transform on the periodic slab $[0,1]\times\mathbb T^n$, $n\geq0$, has a non-trivial kernel due to the symmetry of the manifold and presence of trapped geodesics. For tensor fields gauge freedom increases the kernel further, and the X-ray transform is not solenoidally injective unless $n=0$. We characterize the kernel of the geodesic X-ray transform for $L^2$-regular $m$-tensors for any $m\geq0$. The characterization extends to more general manifolds, twisted slabs, including the M\"obius strip as the simplest example.

Universal infinitesimal Hilbertianity of sub-Riemannian manifolds

2019

We prove that sub-Riemannian manifolds are infinitesimally Hilbertian (i.e., the associated Sobolev space is Hilbert) when equipped with an arbitrary Radon measure. The result follows from an embedding of metric derivations into the space of square-integrable sections of the horizontal bundle, which we obtain on all weighted sub-Finsler manifolds. As an intermediate tool, of independent interest, we show that any sub-Finsler distance can be monotonically approximated from below by Finsler ones. All the results are obtained in the general setting of possibly rank-varying structures.

Interpolated measures with bounded density in metric spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension conditions of Sturm

2011

We construct geodesics in the Wasserstein space of probability measure along which all the measures have an upper bound on their density that is determined by the densities of the endpoints of the geodesic. Using these geodesics we show that a local Poincar\'e inequality and the measure contraction property follow from the Ricci curvature bounds defined by Sturm. We also show for a large class of convex functionals that a local Poincar\'e inequality is implied by the weak displacement convexity of the functional.

The Geodesic Ray Transform on Spherically Symmetric Reversible Finsler Manifolds

2023

We show that the geodesic ray transform is injective on scalar functions on spherically symmetric reversible Finsler manifolds where the Finsler norm satisfies a Herglotz condition. We use angular Fourier series to reduce the injectivity problem to the invertibility of generalized Abel transforms and by Taylor expansions of geodesics we show that these Abel transforms are injective. Our result has applications in linearized boundary rigidity problem on Finsler manifolds and especially in linearized elastic travel time tomography.

Tensorization of quasi-Hilbertian Sobolev spaces

2022

The tensorization problem for Sobolev spaces asks for a characterization of how the Sobolev space on a product metric measure space $X\times Y$ can be determined from its factors. We show that two natural descriptions of the Sobolev space from the literature coincide, $W^{1,2}(X\times Y)=J^{1,2}(X,Y)$, thus settling the tensorization problem for Sobolev spaces in the case $p=2$, when $X$ and $Y$ are infinitesimally quasi-Hilbertian, i.e. the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}$ admits an equivalent renorming by a Dirichlet form. This class includes in particular metric measure spaces $X,Y$ of finite Hausdorff dimension as well as infinitesimally Hilbertian spaces. More generally for $p\in (1,\infty)$ we…

Rectifiability of the reduced boundary for sets of finite perimeter over RCD(K,N) spaces

2019

This paper is devoted to the study of sets of finite perimeter in RCD(K,N) metric measure spaces. Its aim is to complete the picture of the generalization of De Giorgi’s theorem within this framework. Starting from the results of Ambrosio et al. (2019) we obtain uniqueness of tangents and rectifiability for the reduced boundary of sets of finite perimeter. As an intermediate tool, of independent interest, we develop a Gauss–Green integration-by-parts formula tailored to this setting. These results are new and non-trivial even in the setting of Ricci limits. peerReviewed
