Grape seed and skin extract reduces pancreas lipotoxicity, oxidative stress and inflammation in high fat diet fed rats.
2016
IF 2.326; International audience; Obesity is related to an elevated risk of diabetes and the mechanisms whereby fat adversely affects the pancreas are poorly understood. We studied the effect of a high fat diet (HFD) on pancreas steatosis, oxidative stress and inflammation as well as the putative protection afforded by grape seed and skin extract (GSSE). HFD induced body weight gain, without affecting insulinemia, nor glycemia and dropped adiponectemia. HFD also provoked the ectopic deposition of cholesterol and triglyceride, and an oxidative stress characterized by increased lipoperoxidation and carbonylation, inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activities such as CAT, GPx and SOD, depletion …
Broncalt®, class II medical device, in patients with chronic upper airways disease: a survey in clinical practice
2019
Inflammation and infection are common pathogenic mechanisms involved in many otorhinolaryngological (ORL) chronic diseases. Broncalt® is a class II Medical Device containing: thermal water (Medesano, PR, Italy), hyaluronic acid, and grapefruit seed extract. It could exert a safe and effective anti-inflammatory, washing, and antimicrobial activity by virtue of these components. Therefore, the aim of the current survey, conducted in clinical practice of 84 Italian ORL centers, was to evaluate its safety and efficacy in the treatment of patients with chronic upper airways disease. The 1,817 (958 males, mean age 49 years) patients were evaluated at baseline (T0) and after one (T1) and two (T2) …

Eddy covariance and sap flow measurement of energy and mass exchange of woody crops in a Mediterranean environment
2012
Evapotranspiration estimation by micrometeorological techniques through the assessment of mass and energy exchanges in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) is a very active research area, involving both well-known and novel measurement techniques. A crucial aspect in validating experimental results is the integration of independent measurements of mass and energy exchanges in the SPAC. To this aim, the development and validation of an integrated approach in major tree crop species, involving different independent techniques, are presented. Eddy covariance estimates of ET fluxes were compared to up-scaled sap flow measurements in olive, orange and grapevine, three important Mediterrane…
DETERMINATION OF THE OPTIMAL MOMENT OF HARVESTING FOR CABERNET SAUVIGNON AND MERLOT GRAPES IN DRĂGĂŞANI VINEYARD
2011
This paper presents an analysis of the main characteristics of black grapes during ripening and determining the optimum moment to harvest the grapes in the vineyard Drăgăşani. Monitoring process of maturation of the grapes has been done on the varieties of grapes for red wines Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Drăgăşani vineyard.
Elemental geochemistry of soils from the volcanic island of Pantelleria, Sicily: implications for Moscato wine production.
2006
The volcanic island of Pantelleria produces a naturally sweet wine Moscato di Pantelleria DOC obtained from the «Moscato d'Alessandria» (or «Zibibbo»), a grape favoured by hot climate. Geochemical and mineralogical investigations performed on soil profiles devoloped on rocks representative of the major outcropping lithologies (pantellerite, trachyte and alkalic basalt) show that the soils have preserved the parent material imprint. Consistently, values of the chemical index of alteration (CIA) indicate a low to moderate weathering degree for the rocks exposed in the Pantelleria area and consequently a low to moderate soil evolution. Soil-solution chemical analyses highlight that macro- and …
Ochratoxin A removal in synthetic media by living and heat-inactivated cells of Oenococcus oeni isolated from wines
2010
The capacity of Oenococcus oeni to eliminate ochratoxin A (OTA) from synthetic media in different conditions was studied. Ten tested O. oeni strains removed OTA from the medium but with significant differences depending on the strain, incubation period, and initial OTA level in the medium. Mycotoxin reductions higher than 60% were recorded in 14-day cultures spiked with 2 mu g OTA/l. Toxin removal was independent of bacterial viability and culture medium composition. This is the first study carried out to study OTA removal dynamics by living and heat-inactivated cells of O. oeni. The results aim that this bacterium may be a very useful tool to control OTA in food and beverages. (C) 2009 Els…

Green Extraction of Polyphenols from Waste Bentonite to Produce Functional Antioxidant Excipients for Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Purposes: A Waste-t…
2022
In an ever-growing perspective of circular economy, the development of conscious, sustainable and environmental-friendly strategies to recycle the waste products is the key point. The scope of this work was to validate the waste bentonite from the grape processing industries as a precious matrix to extract polyphenols by applying a waste-to-market approach aimed at producing novel functional excipients. The waste bentonite was recovered after the fining process and opportunely pre-treated. Subsequently, both the freeze dried and the so-called “wet” bentonites were subjected to maceration. PEG200 and Propylene Glycol were selected as solvents due to their ability to dissolve poly…
Phylogenetic relationships among Flavescence doree strains and related phytoplasmas determined by heteroduplex mobility assay and sequence of ribosom…
2003
Heteroduplex mobility assay (HMA) and DNA sequencing were performed on Flavescence doree (FD) phytoplasma strains and related phytoplasmas belonging to the elm yellows group. Part of the ribosomal RNA gene operon and a nonribosomal DNA region were utilized for phylogenetic analyses. Two FD strains, FD92 and FD-D, detected in France and Italy, respectively, were identical in both DNA fragments, confirming previous results. Other FD strains were all very similar and most closely resembled ALY, an Italian alder phytoplasma. Phytoplasmas associated with German Palatinate grapevine yellows were shown to form a distinct subcluster, also different from the elm yellows phytoplasma subcluster. Strai…
