Retinal oxidation, apoptosis and age- and sex-differences in the mnd mutant mouse, a model of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis
2004
Retinal degeneration is an early and progressive event in many forms of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs), a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders with unknown pathogenesis. We here used the mutant motor neuron degeneration (mnd) mouse, a late-infantile NCL variant, to investigate the retinal oxidative state and apoptotic cell death as a function of age and sex. Total superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) levels revealed progressive increases in retinal oxyradicals and lipid peroxides of mnd mice of both sexes. Female mnd retinas showed a higher oxidation rate and consistently exhibited the 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE)-adduc…
Metabolism of metyrapone by a soluble enzyme system in rat liver.
1970
The formation of a metabolite of metyrapone by an oxygen sensitive soluble enzyme system in rat liver 105,000×g supernatant has been demonstrated. Enzyme activity requires the intact keto function of metyrapone.
?Reliability of new poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) membranes treated with oxygen plasma plus silicon dioxide layers for pre-prosthetic guided bone re…
2017
Background: The use of cold plasmas may improve the surface roughness of poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) membranes, which may stimulate the adhesion of osteogenic mediators and cells, thus accelerating the biodegradation of the barriers. Moreover, the incorporation of metallic-oxide particles to the surface of these membranes may enhance their osteoinductive capacity. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the reliability of a new PLGA membrane after being treated with oxygen plasma (PO) plus silicon dioxide (SiO) layers for guided bone regeneration (GBR) processes. Material and Methods: Circumferential bone defects (diameter: 11 mm; depth: 3 mm) were created on the top of ei…
Spontaneous electromechanical activity in the rat duodenumin vitro
1990
Isolated rat duodenum shows spontaneous mechanical and electrical activities. Mechanical activity consists in changes both in endoluminal pressure and in isometric tension. Electrical activity is characterized by slow waves with superimposed bursts. This spontaneous activity is tetrodotoxin (TTX) resistant and therefore it is myogenic in origin. Indeed, TTX pretreatment, even in the presence of atropine and guanethidine, caused an increase in amplitude and in frequency of the electrical and mechanical activities. This finding indicates the presence of tonically active inhibitory intramural non adrenergic, non cholinergic (NANC) nerves. Duodenal longitudinal strips showed a spontaneous mecha…
N-Acetylneuraminic acid storage disease
1985
Increased amounts of free sialic acid were found in body fluids, leukocytes, cultured fibroblasts, and liver tissue of a four-year-old boy with mental retardation, ataxia, and clinical and radiologic findings of a mild mucopolysaccharidosis. A diagnosis of Salla disease was made though in contrast to earlier reports, recurrent upper respiratory infections and hepatosplenomegaly were present already in infancy, and skeletal abnormalities of dysostosis multiplex were found in early childhood. Free sialic acid in the urine was identified as N-acetylneuraminic acid by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Sialidase activities were normal. Increased amounts of bound sialic acid were found in liver and cultured f…
Identification of calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) mRNA-expressing cells in normal and injured rat brain
2009
Calcium sensing receptor (CaSR), isolated for the first time from bovine and human parathyroid, is a G-protein-coupled receptors that has been involved in diverse physiological functions. At present a complete in vivo work on the identification of CaSR mRNA-expressing cells in the adult brain lacks and this investigation was undertaken in order to acquire more information on cell type expressing CaSR mRNA in the rat brain and to analyse for the first time its expression in different experimental models of brain injury. The expression of CaSR mRNAs was found mainly in scattered cells throughout almost all the brain regions. A double labeling analysis showed a colocalization of CaSR mRNA expr…
Retinal nerve fibre layer and brain grey substance as early prognostic factors for disability in multiple sclerosis.
2012
We read with interest the article by Bock et al ,1 in which the association between retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and total macular volume (TMV) was analysed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and contrast sensitivity was measured by functional acuity contrast testing in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The authors found that the functional contrast vision in MS is influenced by morphological changes in the anterior visual pathway. This work emphasised that contrast sensitivity is reduced in MS, and that RNFL and TMV, as morphological measures of retinal axon loss, are predictors of contrast sensitivity. Ophthalmological examinations were the basis of the Bock et …
Betulinic Acid Protects from Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in the Mouse Retina
2021
Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) events are involved in the pathophysiology of numerous ocular diseases. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that betulinic acid protects from I/R injury in the mouse retina. Ocular ischemia was induced in mice by increasing intraocular pressure (IOP) to 110 mm Hg for 45 min, while the fellow eye served as a control. One group of mice received betulinic acid (50 mg/kg/day p.o. once daily) and the other group received the vehicle solution only. Eight days after the I/R event, the animals were killed and the retinal wholemounts and optic nerve cross-sections were prepared and stained with cresyl blue or toluidine blue, respectively, to count cells in…

ALD thin ZnO layer as an active medium in a fiber-optic Fabry–Perot interferometer
2015
Abstract A novel optical fiber sensor of temperature using a thin ZnO layer fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) is demonstrated for the first time. The thin ZnO layer was grown on the face of a standard optical telecommunication fiber SMF-28 and operates as a Fabry–Perot interferometer sensitive to temperature. The interferometer characterization was made in the temperature range extending from 50 to 300 °C with resolution equal to 1 °C. The output signal was analyzed by measurement of the shift of the maxima in spectral pattern. The sensitivity of temperature measurement is about 0.05 nm/°C. Furthermore, very good linearity of the sensor was achieved with correlation coefficient R2…
