From the solution processing of hydrophilic molecules to polymer-phthalocyanine hybrid materials for ammonia sensing in high humidity atmospheres.
2014
We have prepared different hybrid polymer-phthalocyanine materials by solution processing, starting from two sulfonated phthalocyanines, s-CoPc and CuTsPc, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (PAA-AM), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyaniline (PANI) as polymers. We also studied the response to ammonia (NH3) of resistors prepared from these sensing materials. The solvent casted films, prepared from s-CoPc and PVP, PEG and PAA-AM, were highly insulating and very sensitive to the relative humidity (RH) variation. The incorporation of s-CoPc in PDDA by means of layer-by-layer (LBL) technique allowed to stabilize the fi…
Reaction pathways for atomic layer deposition with lithium hexamethyl disilazide, trimethyl phosphate, and oxygen plasma
2020
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of lithium-containing films is of interest for the development of next-generation energy storage devices. Lithium hexamethyl disilazide (LiHMDS) is an established precursor to grow these types of films. The LiHMDS molecule can either be used as a single-source precursor molecule for lithium or as a dual-source precursor molecule for lithium and silicon. Single-source behavior of LiHMDS is observed in the deposition process with trimethylphosphate (TMP) resulting in the deposition of crystalline lithium phosphate (Li3PO4). In contrast, LiHMDS exhibits dual-source behavior when combined with O2 plasma, resulting in a lithium silicate. Both processes were characte…
Maximum Noble-Metal Efficiency in Catalytic Materials: Atomically Dispersed Surface Platinum
2014
International audience; Platinum is the most versatile element in catalysis, but it is rare and its high price limits large-scale applications, for example in fuel-cell technology. Still, conventional catalysts use only a small fraction of the Pt content, that is, those atoms located at the catalyst's surface. To maximize the noble-metal efficiency, the precious metal should be atomically dispersed and exclusively located within the outermost surface layer of the material. Such atomically dispersed Pt surface species can indeed be prepared with exceptionally high stability. Using DFT calculations we identify a specific structural element, a ceria ``nanopocket'', which binds Pt2+ so strongly…
Phosphites as precursors in atomic layer deposition thin film synthesis
2021
We here demonstrate a new route for deposition of phosphorous based materials by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using the phosphites Me3PO3 or Et3PO3 as precursors. These contain phosphorous in the oxidation state (III) and are open for deposition of reduced phases by ALD. We have investigated their applicability for the synthesis of LiPO and AlPO materials and characterized their growth by means of in situ quartz crystal microbalance. Phosphites are good alternatives to the established phosphate-based synthesis routes as they have high vapor pressure and are compatible with water as a coreactant during deposition. The deposited materials have been characterized using XPS, x-ray fluorescence…
Positron Annihilation Study of Defects Induced by Various Cutting Methods in Stainless Steel Grade 304
2011
We report in this article the comparison of the subsurface zones (SZs) in austenitic stainless steel 304 samples created by three cutting techniques, i.e., the laser cutting (LC), abrasive water jet (AWJ), and traditional milling cutting (MC). The crystal lattice defects distribution in this zone were investigated using the positron annihilation method. It was shown that the MC creates the great number mainly edge dislocations decorated by vacancies. Their concentration decreases with the increase of the depth from the cut surface. The total depth of the SZ is extended up to 150 μm from the cut surface. Similar dependency was observed for the AWJ machining but the total depth is much lower,…
Hardening of Steel Perforated Tape by Nd:YAG Laser
2016
One of the directions of application of the perforated metal material is their use as cutting elements in the production of processing tools. In this case it is necessary to carry out hardening of cutting surfaces to increase their hardness. One of the methods of hardening metals could be laser treatment. Therefore, the present work is a study of the effect of Nd:YAG laser radiation on the microstructure and hardness of fragments formed from steel perforated tape. Different laser scan speeds (doses) were used in the experiments. The results have shown that the increase the microhardness of 30-40% after the laser treatment of steel perforated tape in the surface layer in a depth range up to …
Near-field scanning optical microscopy to study nanometric structural details of LiNbO3 Zn-diffused channel waveguides
2008
A near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) is used to perform structural and optical characterization of the surface layer after Zn diffusion in a channel waveguide fabricated on lithium niobate. A theoretical approach has been developed in order to extract refractive index contrast from NSOM optical transmission measurements (illumination configuration). As a result, different solid phases present on the sample surface can be identified, such as ZnO and ZnNb2O6. They appear like submicrometric crystallites aligned along the domain wall direction, whose origin can be ascribed to some strain relaxation mechanism during the annealing process after Zn diffusion. Reliability of manual segmentation of cornea, contact lens and tear film using a high-resolution OCT
2015
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the intra/inter-session and intra/inter-observer variability of manual segmentation of thickness of the pre-lens tear film, contact lens (CL), post-lens tear film, epithelium, bowman’s layer, stroma and the whole cornea and CLs with a flat and a steep fit, using a commercial high-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomographer (OCT). Two different observers obtained three repeated measures in two separate sessions. A high correlation was found between the values obtained by the two different observers, except for the thinner layers, epithelium, and Bowman’s layer. Inter-observer analysis showed a high consistency in the measurements obtained by b…
Light-emitting electrochemical cells: recent progress and future prospects
2014
We provide a short review on light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), one of the simplest kinds of electroluminescent devices. In their simplest form, they consist of just one active layer containing an emitter and a salt. They operate with low voltages, which allows for high power efficiencies, and air-stable electrodes, which simplifies the encapsulation requirements. The aim of this review is to highlight the recent advances and the main remaining challenges. We describe the current understanding of their peculiar operation mechanism and focus on the major concepts used to improve their performance.
Prussian blue@MoS2 layer composites as highly efficient cathodes for sodium- and potassium-ion batteries
2018
Prussian blue (PB) represents a simple, economical, and eco‐friendly system as cathode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). However, structural problems usually worsen its experimental performance thus motivating the search for alternative synthetic strategies and the formation of composites that compensate these deficiencies. Herein, a straightforward approach for the preparation of PB/MoS2‐based nanocomposites is presented. MoS2 provides a 2D active support for the homogeneous nucleation of porous PB nanocrystals, which feature superior surface areas than those obtained by other methodologies, giving rise to a compact PB shell covering the full flake. The nanocomposite exhibits an ex…
