Optical properties of ultrathin Al2O3/ZnO nanolaminates
2015
Abstract Because of their high resistance against ultraviolet and high energy particles, ultrathin amorphous nanolaminates can be very attractive for aerospace application. Here we report on the optical and structural properties of ultrathin Al2O3/ZnO nanolaminates deposited by Atomic Layer Deposition. Structural properties of nanolaminates were studied by GIXRD and AFM. Optical characterization was performed by transmittance, spectroscopic ellipsometry and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Regression analysis of ellipsometric spectra has shown that absorption peak decreases and blue shifted with the decrease of bilayer thickness in the stack. On the basis of the analysis of structural a…
Optical quality of hyperopic and myopic phakic intraocular lenses
2013
Aims: To assess and compare the optical quality of the myopic and hyperopic implantable collamer lens (ICL) from its wavefront aberrations for different powers and pupil diameters. Settings and Design: Prospective study. Material and Methods: The wavefront aberrations of two myopic (−3 and −6 diopters (D)) and two hyperopic V4b ICLs (+3 and +6D) were measured in vitro . To assess and compare the optical quality of different powers of ICLs, we analyzed the root mean square (RMS) of total higher order aberrations (HOAs), trefoil, coma, tetrafoil, secondary astigmatism, and spherical aberration at 3- and 4.5-mm pupil. In addition, the point spread functions (PSFs) of each ICL evaluated were ca…
Radiative and dynamic effects of absorbing aerosol particles over the Pearl River Delta, China
2008
Abstract Results are reported from a ground-based measurement campaign conducted in a highly polluted region in southeast of China in October–November 2004. The experiment focused on absorbing aerosol particles and their effects on the solar radiation field and local meteorology. A Raman lidar in conjunction with Sun photometer data measured profiles of particle extinction; ground-based in situ data of aerosol optical properties were collected by nephelometer and absorption photometer. Exceptionally high values of aerosol optical depth of up to 1.5 were observed. The measurements were input to a radiative transfer model, which simulated high solar radiative forcing values for the aerosol pa…
Ontology languages for the semantic web: A never completely updated review
2006
This paper gives a never completely account of approaches that have been used for the research community for representing knowledge. After underlining the importance of a layered approach and the use of standards, it starts with early efforts used for artificial intelligence researchers. Then recent approaches, aimed mainly at the semantic web, are described. Coding examples from the literature are presented in both sections. Finally, the semantic web ontology creation process, as we envision it, is introduced.
Study of the Chemical Conversion of Aluminum Alloys by Coupling CFDE and EQCM
2004
The ability of the channel flow double electrode (CFDE) technique and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) for studying in situ chromate phosphate conversion coating on 5182 aluminum alloys was explored. It was first demonstrated that aqueous Cr(VI) can be analyzed quantitatively with the CFDE technique by reduction into Cr(III) on a graphite electrode. Samples used for EQCM were quartz plated by physical vapor deposition using a 5182 alloy target, allowing thin layers of aluminum alloys with a similar chemical composition to be obtained. EQCM was adapted in order to account for the hydrodynamic conditions in an industrial process, by placing the quartz in a flow cell. In orde…
Dust mobilization and transport in the northern Sahara during SAMUM 2006 – a meteorological overview
2009
The SAMUM field campaign in southern Morocco in May/June 2006 provides valuable data to study the emission, and the horizontal and vertical transports of mineral dust in the Northern Sahara. Radiosonde and lidar observations show differential advection of air masses with different characteristics during stable nighttime conditions and up to 5-km deep vertical mixing in the strongly convective boundary layer during the day. Lagrangian and synoptic analyses of selected dust periods point to a topographic channel from western Tunisia to central Algeria as a dust source region. Significant emission events are related to cold surges from the Mediterranean in association with eastward passing upp…
Structural transformations in amorphous selenium as studied by the differential thermal analysis and exoelectron emission technique
2007
The parameters (temperature, activation energy) of the surface and volume glass transition (retrification process) in amorphous selenium produced by rapid quenching of the liquid phase have been determined using the EEE and DTA techniques. EEE is a surface effect connected with structural transformations in the surface layer whereas the DTA measurements give the information about the transformations occurring in the volume of the sample. It has been found that the surface retrification of selenium occurs with activation energy smaller than the volume retrification, both observed in the first heating run. The value of activation energy for the volume retrification measured in the second DTA …

Evaluation of organic compound source and natural attenuation, Liepaja Latvia
2004
Liepaja harbor is a former Soviet military site. Remediation of the harbor basin, including dredging of the sediments heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals is necessary to convert the harbor for civilian use. Abandoned pollution sources on land still continue to leach contaminants into the harbor basin. Our long-term research objective therefore is to identify transport pathways into the harbor sediments and to assess the in-situ degradation of pollutants in the system. The Liepaja harbor is treated as a complex system, where processes in the water column interact with the sediments and the nepheloid sediment boundary layer. For this research PAHs are used as the…
Corneal Biomechanics, Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer, and Optic Disc in Children
2014
Purpose. To evaluate the possible associations between corneal biomechanical parameters, optic disc morphology, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in healthy white Spanish children. Methods. This cross-sectional study included 100 myopic children and 99 emmetropic children as a control group, ranging in age from 6 to 17 years. The Ocular Response Analyzer was used to measure corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor. The optic disc morphology and RNFL thickness were assessed using posterior segment optical coherence tomography (Cirrus HD-OCT). The axial length was measured using an IOLMaster, whereas the central corneal thickness was measured by anterior segment opti…
