Detection of phase transitions in thin films with a quartz crystal microbalance

Abstract The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is used to determine the phase transition point of thin films by measuring the change in frequency as a function of temperature. To elucidate this relationship, two types of polymers were studied where the bulk phase transitions were known. We investigated a casted thin film of an amphiphilic polyoxazoline and a Langmuir-Blodgett film comprised of fifteen double layers of an amphotropic polyacrylate. The phase transition points of the thin films could be detected by the QCM which were in the same range as for the bulk materials.

Use of two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography for the components study of poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose)

Two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography on cellulose plates has been used for separating and quantifying the three adenosine derivatives: AMP, phosphoribosyl AMP (PRAMP), and (PR)2AMP obtained by venom phosphodiesterase digestion of poly(ADP-ribose). In vitro synthesized polymer, up to 300 derivatives in length were studied. Some parameters of the complexity of poly(ADP-ribose) could be deduced from our results: (i) The first branching point appears in fragments of approximately 21 derivatives in length. (ii) The branching points are located at regular distances of approximately 41 derivatives from each other.

Layer-by-layer deposited multilayer assemblies of polyelectrolytes and proteins: from ultrathin films to protein arrays

We have recently introduced a new method of creating ultrathin films of polyelectrolytes based on the electrostatic attraction between opposite charges. Multilayer assemblies are adsorbed in a layer-by-layer fashion from aqueous solutions of the polymers. The total film thickness can easily be adjusted by varying the ionic strength of the solution. Here, we report on the temperature stability and the water content of the multilayer assemblies. Furthermore, we have extended our concept to the incorporation of protein layers into films of synthetic polyelectrolytes. Ni−Cu−Al layered double hydroxide (Ni−Cu−Al LDH) was proposed as an electro‐Fenton‐like catalyst for 8‐hydroxyquinoline‐5‐sulfonic acid (8‐HQS) removal in water. The properties of the prepared catalysts were characterized by using X‐ray, SEM and EDAX analyses. The effect of numerous operative parameters on the removal of 8‐HQS and total organic carbon (TOC) was studied. Very high level removal of both 8‐HQS and TOC (87 and 79 %, respectively) were obtained by using a pressurized electro‐Fenton‐like process (PrEFL‐LDH) at P=10 bars, using a Ti/IrO2‐Ta2O5 anode for 6 h. Effects of VTE Treatment on Composition of Lithium Tantalate Single Crystals

The vapour transport equilibration (VTE) is used to change the Li/Ta ratio in lithium tantalate single crystals of different crystallographic orientations (Z-cut and Y/128°-cut). Treatment by VTE is shown to provide thin layers in lithium tantalate plates composition of which is close to stoichiometric while the values of the coercive field are different, much smaller compared with congruent single crystals. There are several mechanisms of diffusion of the Li+ ions in LiTaO3 under conditions of VTE the contribution of each being dependent on the crystallographic orientation of the sample.

Summary This study examines the influence of temperature on oxidation kinetics of the alloys Z2CT 17 and Z4CN 18-09. A thin layer of aluminium oxide was laid down on these, using chemical, vapor deposition, in order to give improved protection.

The bleaching efficacy of carbamide peroxide gels containing potassium nitrate desensitizer

Background To evaluate the bleaching efficacy of at-home carbamide peroxide (CP) gels in two concentrations, containing or not a desensitizing agent. Material and methods Forty incisors were divided into four groups (n=10), according to gel concentrations (10% or 22%), and presence or not of 3% potassium nitrate in the gel. A thin layer of gel was applied to the buccal surface of each tooth for 2h/day for 4 weeks. Bleaching efficacy was measured using a spectrophotometer, and ∆E*ab, ∆E00 and ∆WID were calculated. Effect of the color of the intraocular lens on optical and visual quality

Purpose: To analyze the optical quality of intraocular lenses (IOL) with an orange (PC440Y) and a yellow (SN60AT) filter, and correlate these results with the visual quality of patients with these implants. Alkylsilyl compounds as enablers of atomic layer deposition: analysis of (Et3Si)3As through the GaAs process

A new chemistry has been developed to deposit GaAs, the quintessential compound semiconductor. The ALD process is based on a dechlorosilylation reaction between GaCl3 and (Et3Si)3As. Characteristic ALD growth was demonstrated, indicating good applicability of the alkylsilyl arsenide precursor. ALD of GaAs produced uniform, amorphous and stoichiometric films with low impurity content. This was done with saturating growth rates and an easily controlled film thickness. Crystallization was achieved by annealing.
