Restricted Neighborhood Search Clustering Revisited: An Evolutionary Computation Perspective

2013

Protein-protein interaction networks have been broadly studied in the last few years, in order to understand the behavior of proteins inside the cell. Proteins interacting with each other often share common biological functions or they participate in the same biological process. Thus, discovering protein complexes made of groups of proteins strictly related, can be useful to predict protein functions. Clustering techniques have been widely employed to detect significative biological complexes. In this paper, we integrate one of the most popular network clustering techniques, namely the Restricted Neighborhood Search Clustering (RNSC), with evolutionary computation. The two cost functions in…

Miejsce międzypokoleniowego uczenia się w procesie hominizacji

2016

This article presents the results of a pilot and exploration study. The main objective of the research was to investigate the differences of intergenerational learning in the process of hominisation. For the purpose of the study the author used the quantitative strategy of research and author’s instrument of measurement. In the study participated 50 adult respondents from province opolskie. The research in question combines in a way such fields of knowledge as anthropology, pedagogics and psychology; the aim of the combination is to explore the processes which support the development of a human being in light of andragogy. Two conceptions have constituted the theoretical and methodological …

Professional Learning of Teachers in Ethiopia: Challenges and Implications for Reform

2015

Continuous professional development of teachers is of growing interest globally, as it is considered vital to cope effectively with ongoing changes and to improve the quality of education. This qualitative case study explores potential and actual barriers that hinder teachers’ professional development in Ethiopian schools. Data was collected via interviews and focus group discussions from 37 purposively sampled participants. The study reveals three major challenges in teachers’ development: 1) conceptions and conceptual issues related to teaching, professional development and mentoring, 2) management and leadership, and 3) teachers’ work conditions. The need to reconsider educational change…

TEACHER TEAMS AND SCHOOLS BECOME LEADERS TO DISSEMINATE INNOVATIVE PRACTICE

2016

We will introduce a study about teachers taking part in networking for personal development and becoming teacher leaders. In 2011 a multilevel national joint collaboration network of schools with innovative experience was created to foster dissemination of new teaching and learning experiences among teachers. In order to organize learning for teachers, a lesson based collaborative continuous teacher professional learning model was implemented. The research shows that conducting and analyzing lessons has helped participants become more competent professionals and develop skills that are crucial for a good leader. Categories characterizing teacher leaders and lead schools were identified. Fac…

Hidden Markov Random Field model and BFGS algorithm for Brain Image Segmentation

2016

Brain MR images segmentation has attracted a particular focus in medical imaging. The automatic image analysis and interpretation became a necessity. Segmentation is one of the key operations to provide a crucial decision support to physicians. Its goal is to simplify the representation of an image into items meaningful and easier to analyze. Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRF) provide an elegant way to model the segmentation problem. This model leads to the minimization problem of a function. BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm) is one of the most powerful methods to solve unconstrained optimization problem. This paper presents how we combine HMRF and BFGS to achieve a good seg…

Alignment between standardized assessments and academic standards: The case of the Saber Mathematics Test in Colombia

2013

In this study the concept of alignment is analyzed by presenting the results of a study that examines the degree of alignment between a standardized mathematics assessment and a set of academic standards. The alignment was examined using the Webb model and the results suggest that the degree of alignment between standardized assessments and academic content standards is not the most appropriate and therefore the results should be interpreted with great caution and stakeholders must be very careful with the type of decisions that are made based on the results of these types of assessments.

Employees' perceptions of high-performance work systems and innovative behaviour: The role of exploratory learning

2017

Abstract This paper analyses the influence of employees' perceptions of high-performance work systems (HPWSs) on employees' exploratory learning and innovative behaviour. Furthermore, the mediating role of exploratory learning in this relationship has also been studied. To achieve these objectives, a quantitative analysis was conducted with a sample of 304 researchers from the Spanish public sector. Results showed the relevance of employees' perceptions of HPWSs in promoting exploratory learning and employees' innovative behaviour. The mediating role of exploratory learning in the relationship was assessed. The paper mentions the importance of workers' perceptions on the implementation of H…

Intra-cardiac Signatures of Atrial Arrhythmias Identified by Machine Learning and Traditional Features

2021

Intracardiac devices separate atrial arrhythmias (AA) from sinus rhythm (SR) using electrogram (EGM) features such as rate, that are imperfect. We hypothesized that machine learning could improve this classification.

El Gran Catharro de 1580 ¿gripe o pertussis?

2005

The gran Catharro (1580) is considered the first influenza epidemic. The analysis of various testimonies of the time may offer some doubts about whether or not it was so; and data strongly support that it was a pertussis epidemic.
