Managing Knowledge in Academic Libraries Are we? Should we?

This article gives an overview of the field of knowledge management and suggests how this can be applied to academic libraries. A literature review has been conducted and has been subject to a critical analysis of comparison to IFLAs standard for “Continuing Professional Development: Principles and Best Practices” (IFLA, 2015). Here IFLA has identified 10 points of best practice. These 10 points will be measured against the literature in the field of knowledge management to ascertain if academic libraries would benefit from a stronger relation to knowledge management.

Accessing the gluonic structure of light nuclei at a future electron-ion collider

2020

We show how exclusive vector meson production off light ions can be used to probe the spatial distribution of small-$x$ gluons in the deuteron and $^3$He wave functions. In particular, we demonstrate how short range repulsive nucleon-nucleon interactions affect the predicted coherent $J/\Psi$ production spectra. Fluctuations of the nucleon substructure are shown to have a significant effect on the incoherent cross section above $|t|\gtrsim 0.2\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$. By explicitly performing the JIMWLK evolution, we predict the $x$-dependence of coherent and incoherent cross sections in the EIC energy range. Signal transduction pathways of the epidermal growth factor receptor in colorectal cancer and their inhibition by small molecules.

While prognostic factors can help to classify the standard risk of subpopulations of patients with the same tumor entity, it is still not possible to predict the response of individual patients to specific therapies. The reason for such wide variation in cancer therapy responses remains largely unknown. The field of chemotherapy is currently undergoing a paradigm shift from classical cytotoxic chemotherapy to targeted therapy in order to kill tumor cells more efficiently with fewer side effects on normal tissue. Conformal equivalence of visual metrics in pseudoconvex domains

We refine estimates introduced by Balogh and Bonk, to show that the boundary extensions of isometries between smooth strongly pseudoconvex domains in $\C^n$ are conformal with respect to the sub-Riemannian metric induced by the Levi form. As a corollary we obtain an alternative proof of a result of Fefferman on smooth extensions of biholomorphic mappings between pseudoconvex domains. The proofs are inspired by Mostow's proof of his rigidity theorem and are based on the asymptotic hyperbolic character of the Kobayashi or Bergman metrics and on the Bonk-Schramm hyperbolic fillings.

A Model of Smart G-Quadruplex Ligand

2012

An unprecedented strategy to control the quadruplex- vs duplex-DNA selectivity of a ligand is reported. We designed a compound whose structure can rearrange when it interacts with a G-quadruplex, thereby controlling its affinity. Thus, the first "smart G-quadruplex ligand" is reported, since this ligand experiences a structural change in the presence of quadruplexes but not in the presence of duplexes, ensuring a high level of quadruplex selectivity.

Assessing the Differential Affinity of Small Molecules for Noncanonical DNA Structures

The targeting of higher-order DNA structures has been thoroughly developed with G-quadruplex DNA but not with other structures like branched DNA (also known as DNA junctions). Because these alternative higher-order DNA architectures might be of high biological relevance, we implemented a high-throughput version of the FRET melting assay that enabled us to map the interactions of a candidate with four different DNA structures (duplex- and quadruplex DNA, three- and four-way junctions) in a rapid and reliable manner. We also introduce a novel index, the BONDS (branched and other noncanonical DNA selectivity) index, to conveniently quantify this differential affinity.
