In this article, starting with the exemplary case of Charlie Hebdo, we discuss the way in which the theme of laughter is intertwined with that of freedom of expression. More precisely, we try to answer the following questions: how can the comic framework modify the space of freedom of expression? Can everything be said within this kind of framework? Can laughter be both an antidote and an enhancer of verbal violence?

The growing dominance of English as an international language of scientific communication in the world has been widely acknowledged. However, its effect in the relevant discourse community in Latvia is still to be explored. A case study was undertaken to improve upon the current understanding of the choice of scientific publishing language in Latvia and explore historical factors underpinning the current predominance of English as the lingua franca of the scientific community. The purpose of this article is to analyze the self-translation strategies, together with the manipulation and persuasion policies present in the column “30 Días en Madrid/30 Giorni a Madrid” of the journal Legiones y Falanges/Legioni e Falangi. This column, written by the critic Masoliver relating briefly the political events of the time, represents a sample of how, in those times, translation – as intersemiotic processes – could be considered an ideal expression of a linguistic ideology, as well as an expression of the desire to build a national identity.
