Citēšanas kultūra skolēnu zinātniski pētnieciskajos darbos Liepājas Valsts 1. ģimnāzijā
2018
Reading, Gender, and Engagement : Lessons From Five PISA Countries
2014
The authors, members of the PISA/PIRLS Task Force, provide a summary of major gender differences in performance found overall on PISA 2009, along with relevant trends since 2000. The five countries represented by the authors are highlighted in this summary, which includes findings related to the interaction of engagement and reading literacy achievement by gender. These data are foregrounded from PISA because they add further evidence of a serious global pattern of boys’ underachievement in reading and lower reading engagement relative to girls. This is followed by a discussion of what each of our five countries has done in response to the gender gap in reading literacy. The article conclud…
Finnish School in International Comparison
2016
Traditionally, one of the strengths of the Finnish education system has been students’ advanced reading literacy skills. In PISA assessments, the proficiency levels for mathematics and science have also been high in Finland. Albeit the average level of Finnish student performance has slightly declined in the latest PISA assessments, Finland is still among the highest-ranking countries in the world.
Equivalence of Translations in International Reading Literacy Studies
2010
Recent years have witnessed a significant increase in the interest in international assessments of student performance. In such assessments it is mandatory that all the different‐language texts be equivalent to each other, that is, equally difficult to understand. The article summarizes a study made on the topic, examining the problems of equivalence encountered when translating texts in international reading literacy assessments. In the study, three English and Finnish texts used in the PISA 2000 reading test were compared text‐analytically. The analysis revealed six different types of problem, which, moreover, differed considerably between the three texts. As a result of the problems, non…
Effects of a physical education program on the development of early literacy abilities in preschool children
2016
Introduction Several studies showed a relationship between physical activity and cognition in school-aged children (Carson et al 2015). The aim of this study was to analyse whether the amount and frequency of a physical education (PE) program affected the early reading and writing skills in preschool children. Methods This study involved 189 children (age: 4.62 ± 0.97 years; height: 107.83 ± 7.82 cm, body weight: 19.84 ± 4.95 kg) of 8 Palermo kindergartens who were randomly divided in a control group (C, n= 29), a 1-intervention group (I-1, n= 120) and a 2-intervention group (I-2, n= 40). I-1 and I-2 children performed a PE program of 16-week length for 4 and 10 hours/week, respectively (to…

A Performance-Based Test for Assessing Students’ Online Inquiry Competences in Schools
2018
In this paper, we introduce a performance-based test for measuring adolescents’ competences in online inquiry. The test covers four competence dimensions: (1) searching and selecting relevant sources, (2) identifying the main ideas presented in the sources, (3) evaluating the credibility of the sources, and (4) synthesizing information across the sources. We implement a technological solution called NEURONE to carry out this routine. The scoring of the test data is demonstrated by presenting preliminary results of a case study. Finally, we discuss the strengths and limitations of the test.
La Evolución del Concepto de Patrimonio : Oportunidades para la Enseñanza de las Ciencias
2018
This paper describes and analyses how heritage concept evolves and changes from Spanish law on heritage. For that, it is analyzed explicitly heritage concept and focus on natural and geological heritage from three documents. In this analysis, we observe an evolutionary-conceptual tendency of the heritage and its teaching, in which apparently there is no single concept about heritage and, therefore, a single educational perspective. In this trend, the conceptualization of heritage is expanding and enriching from a more unidisciplinary and conservation-oriented vision, towards a more interdisciplinary and educational. This conceptual evolution is associated in turn with the material and tangi…
