Fields of values of odd-degree irreducible characters

Abstract In this paper we clarify the quadratic irrationalities that can be admitted by an odd-degree complex irreducible character χ of an arbitrary finite group. Write Q ( χ ) to denote the field generated over the rational numbers by the values of χ, and let d > 1 be a square-free integer. We prove that if Q ( χ ) = Q ( d ) then d ≡ 1 (mod 4) and if Q ( χ ) = Q ( − d ) , then d ≡ 3 (mod 4). This follows from the main result of this paper: either i ∈ Q ( χ ) or Q ( χ ) ⊆ Q ( exp ⁡ ( 2 π i / m ) ) for some odd integer m ≥ 1 .

A relation between the curvature ellipse and the curvature parabola

Abstract At each point in an immersed surface in ℝ4 there is a curvature ellipse in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry of the surface. Recently, at the singular point of a corank 1 singular surface in ℝ3, a curvature parabola in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry has been defined. When projecting a regular surface in ℝ4 to ℝ3 in a tangent direction, corank 1 singularities appear generically. The projection has a cross-cap singularity unless the direction of projection is asymptotic, where more degenerate singularities can appear. Adiabatic evolution for systems with infinitely many eigenvalue crossings

International audience; We formulate an adiabatic theorem adapted to models that present an instantaneous eigenvalue experiencing an infinite number of crossings with the rest of the spectrum. We give an upper bound on the leading correction terms with respect to the adiabatic limit. The result requires only differentiability of the considered projector, and some geometric hypothesis on the local behavior of the eigenvalues at the crossings.

Module categories of finite Hopf algebroids, and self-duality

International audience; We characterize the module categories of suitably finite Hopf algebroids (more precisely, $X_R$-bialgebras in the sense of Takeuchi (1977) that are Hopf and finite in the sense of a work by the author (2000)) as those $k$-linear abelian monoidal categories that are module categories of some algebra, and admit dual objects for "sufficiently many" of their objects. Then we proceed to show that in many situations the Hopf algebroid can be chosen to be self-dual, in a sense to be made precise. This generalizes a result of Pfeiffer for pivotal fusion categories and the weak Hopf algebras associated to them.

Space of signatures as inverse limits of Carnot groups

We formalize the notion of limit of an inverse system of metric spaces with 1-Lipschitz projections having unbounded fibers. The construction is applied to the sequence of free Carnot groups of fixed rank n and increasing step. In this case, the limit space is in correspondence with the space of signatures of rectifiable paths in ℝn, as introduced by Chen. Hambly-Lyons’s result on the uniqueness of signature implies that this space is a geodesic metric tree. As a particular consequence we deduce that every path in ℝn can be approximated by projections of some geodesics in some Carnot group of rank n, giving an evidence that the complexity of sub-Riemannian geodesics increases with the step.

Degrees of characters in the principal block

Abstract Let G be a finite group. We prove that if the set of degrees of characters in the principal p-block of G has size at most 2 then G is p-solvable, and G / O p ′ ( G ) has a metabelian normal Sylow p-subgroup. The general question of proving that if an arbitrary p-block has two degrees then their defect groups are metabelian remains open.
