Canonical correlation in multivariate time series analysis
1997
We analyze a class o f state space identification algorithms for time series, based on canonical correlation analysis in the ligth of recent results on stochastic systems theory calle d « subspace methods » .These can be describe as covariance estimation followed b y stochastic realization .The methods offer the major advantage o f converting the nonlinear parameter estimation phase in traditional V A R M A models identification in to the solution o f Riccati equation but introduce at the same time some no n trivial mathematical problem s related to positivity. The states o f the forward -backward innovations representation have an interpretation : Instrumental Variables estimators .
Earth resistance measurements in urban contexts: Problems and possible solutions
2017
Both EN 50522 and IEEE Std. 81 propose the Fall of Potential Method (FPM) to carry out the measurement of the resistance to earth of an Earthing System (ES). However, in urban areas, the recommended distances between the ES and auxiliary electrodes are not easy to respect, due to the presence of buildings and tarmac. Moreover, unknown buried metallic parts, as well as the interconnection among the ESs made by the Distributor System Operator, could modify the earth potential profile of the area, affecting the measurement results. In this paper, the issues that could affect the measurement result if FPM is used in an urban context are presented. A parametric analysis, carried out with Comsol …
Advanced spatio-temporal point processes for the Sicily seismicity analysis
2018
Due to the complexity of the generator process of seismic events, we study under several aspects the interaction structure between earthquake events using recently developed spatio-temporal statistical techniques and models. Using these advanced statistical tools, we aim to characterise the global and local scale cluster behaviour of the Easter Sicily seismicity considering the catalogue data since 2006, when the Italian National Seismic Network was upgraded and earthquake location was sensibly improved. Firstly, we characterise the global complex spatiotemporal interaction structure with the space-time ETAS model where background seismicity is estimated non-parametrically, while triggered …
Scope of service-learning in physical education teacher education: a mixed methodological approach
2019
Mentoring of Newly Qualified Teachers in the Educational Sense
2017
The importance of lifelong learning in teachers’ professional development has become increasingly topical issue globally. In teaching, especially the transition from education to occupation seems to be more challenging compared to other fields. It is evident that under the rapidly changing circumstances teachers’ professional knowledge has to be constantly renewed, and especially in the phase of transition from teacher education to working life, new approaches are needed. peerReviewed
The determination of haemoglobin as cyanhaemiglobin or as alkaline haematin D-575. Comparison of method-related errors.
1989
In order to compare the accuracy of haemoglobin (Hb) determination methods, the commonly used cyanhaemiglobin (HiCN) method and the recently developed alkaline haematin D-575 (AHD) method (R. Zander, W. Lang & H. U. Wolf (1984) Clin. Chim. Acta 136, 83-93; H. U. Wolf, W. Lang & R. Zander (1984) Clin. Chim. Acta 136, 95-104) were tested with respect to method-related errors such as plasma, cell, and Hb errors. Both methods yield a series of more or less significant errors which generally lead to an overestimation of the Hb concentration in the order of 1%. However, in all three cases of plasma errors, i.e. normal plasma error, plasma error in lipaemic blood, and plasma error in bilirubinaemi…
Transition from glass to digital slide microscopy in the teaching of oral pathology in a Brazilian dental school
2014
Objectives: Several medical and dental schools have described their experience in the transition from conventional to digital microscopy in the teaching of general pathology and histology disciplines; however, this transitional process has scarcely been reported in the teaching of oral pathology. Therefore, the objective of the current study is to report the transition from conventional glass slide to virtual microscopy in oral pathology teaching, a unique experience in Latin America. Study Design: An Aperio ScanScope® scanner was used to digitalize histological slides used in practical lectures of oral pathology. The challenges and benefits observed by the group of Professors from the Pira…
Drawing the premises for personalized learning : illustrations of management and accounting
2019
This paper reports on a teaching innovation using participant-generated drawings. Experienced managers were asked to produce a drawing to illustrate their work from an accounting perspective. The drawings were then used to make the managerial context of the participants the explicit starting point for personalized executive learning. This study is the first in the sphere of accounting education and research to take drawing seriously as a learning method. The results of the experiment show how drawing can be further used as a tool in management education by facilitating the visualization of the managerial contexts participants work within. peerReviewed
Sto lat metody projektów w Polsce
2017
The text presents the development of the project method in Polish education throughout the last century. The project method was introduced into Poland after regaining independence, and it was implemented during the inter-war period (1918-1939) in some schools, both in urban and rural environments. Nevertheless, the method was at that time treated as a pedagogical novelty and experiment, rather than a natural part of school life. After 1945, education, like other aspects of socio-political life, was influenced by the communist propaganda, and the project method, supporting autonomy, democracy and empowerment, was not promoted as a valuable educational approach. After 1989, when progressive t…
