Marine Isonitriles and Their Related Compounds.

Marine isonitriles represent the largest group of natural products carrying the remarkable isocyanide moiety. Together with marine isothiocyanates and formamides, which originate from the same biosynthetic pathways, they offer diverse biological activities and in spite of their exotic nature they may constitute potential lead structures for pharmaceutical development. Covering: up to mid-2019 This review highlights the utilization of biomass-derived building blocks in the total synthesis of natural products. An overview over several renewable feedstock classes, namely wood/lignin, cellulose, chitin and chitosan, fats and oils, as well as terpenes, is given, covering the time span from the initial beginning of natural product synthesis until today. The root of Gentiana lutea L., famous for its bitter properties, is often used in alcoholic bitter beverages, food products and traditional medicine to stimulate the appetite and improve digestion. Focused microwave-assisted Soxhlet extraction: An expeditive approach for the isolation of lipids from sausage products

A prototype of extractor based on the conventional Soxhlet principles but assisted in the cartridge zone by focused microwaves is proposed for accelerating the extraction of lipids from sausage products. The extraction process has been optimised using a multivariate design involving the main variables influencing the performance of the prototype (namely, irradiation power P, irradiation time T and number of cycles C). Under the optimum working conditions (P=160 W, T=10 s and C=14), the extraction of lipids from different Spanish sausage products is complete in 45 min. Determination of quinolone residues in chicken and fish by capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry

A specific pressure-assisted CE-MS method is described for the analysis of five quinolone residues. MS using a single quadrupole is compared with multiple-stage MS using a quadrupole IT (QIT-MS(n)). The procedure involves a common sample preparation by SPE on disposable cartridges. The most suitable electrolyte is 60 mM (NH(4))(2)CO(3) at pH 9.2. Single quadrupole does not provide enough fragmentation to confirm identities according to the current legislation. However, QIT-MS(n) achieves selective fragmentation. Using this method, danofloxacin, enrofloxacin, flumequine, ofloxacin, and pipemidic acid are analyzed in fortified samples of chicken and fish. Recoveries at levels of 50 ng/g were …

Gangliosides are sphingolipids containing one or more moieties of sialic acid in their structure. Both gangliosides and sialic acid are bioactive compounds related to animal physiology. Due to their biological relevance, analytical methods adapted to each type of matrix have been developed over time. The present study reviews the main methods applied to the analysis of sialic acid and gangliosides in biological samples and dairy products.

Monitoring pesticide residues in honey, wax, and bees helps to assess the potential risk of these products to consumer health and gives information on the pesticide treatments that have been used on the field crops surrounding the hives. The present review seeks to discuss the basic principles and recent developments in pesticide analysis in bee products and their application in monitoring programs. Consideration is given to extraction, cleanup, chromatographic separation, and detection techniques.

Congener profile, occurrence and estimated dietary intake of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in foods marketed in the Region of Valencia (Spain).

During 2006-2008, a monitoring program was conducted on 29 target compounds, including PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, comprising 150 randomly collected individual food samples marketed in the Region of Valencia, Spain, grouped into 8 categories (vegetables, cereals, fats and oils, eggs, milk and dairy products, fish products, meat and meat products and fish oil). For PCDD/Fs, the highest frequency of detection corresponds to 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, OCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF; and PCBs 118, 105 and 156 were the more frequent dl-PCBs. Total Synthesis of (-)-Hymenosetin.

The 3-decalinoyltetramic acid (−)-hymenosetin and its N-methyl analogue were prepared in 11 and 8 steps, respectively, from (+)-citronellal using an intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction as the key step. This method represents the first example for the synthesis of a 3-decalinoyltetramic acid with a free NH moiety. The stereochemistry of the title compound, an unnatural diastereomer, and of a decalin building block was studied in detail using circular dichroism spectroscopy in the IR and UV/VIS freqeuncy range. This allowed to determine the absolute configuration of the natural product and to plan the synthetic route.
