Evaluation of Distributed OFDR-Based Sensing Performance in Mixed Neutron/Gamma Radiation Environments

2017

We report the study of a radiation resistant single mode optical fiber doped with fluorine exposed to mixed neutron and $\gamma $ -radiation up to $10^{17}$ n/cm2 fluence and >2 MGy dose to evaluate its performances when used as the sensing element of a distributed Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR). The use of complementary spectroscopic techniques highlights some differences between the responses of solely $\gamma $ -radiation (10 MGy) or mixed neutron and $\gamma $ ( $10^{17}$ n/cm $^{2}+>2$ MGy) irradiated samples. Those differences are linked to the defect generation rather than to structural changes of the ${a}$ -SiO2 host matrix. We show that a modification of the refracti…

Radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors with small electrodes for High Luminosity LHC

2019

Abstract The upgrade of the tracking detectors for the High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) requires the development of novel radiation hard silicon sensors. The development of Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors targets the replacement of hybrid pixel detectors with radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors. We designed, manufactured and tested radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors in the TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology with small electrodes pixel designs. These designs can achieve pixel pitches well below current hybrid pixel sensors (typically 50 ×  50 μ m ) for improved spatial resolution. Monolithic sensors in our design allow to reduce multiple scattering by thinning to a total si…

Studies for low mass, large area monolithic silicon pixel detector modules using the MALTA CMOS pixel chip

2021

Abstract The MALTA monolithic silicon pixel sensors have been used to study dicing and thinning of monolithic silicon pixel detectors for large area and low mass modules. Dicing as close as possible to the active circuitry will allow to build modules with very narrow inactive regions between the sensors. Inactive edge regions of less than 5 μ m to the electronic circuitry could be achieved for 100 μ m thick sensors. The MALTA chip (Cardella et al., 2019) also offers the possibility to transfer data and power directly from chip to chip. Tests have been carried out connecting two MALTA chips directly using ultrasonic wedge wire bonding. Results from lab tests show that the data accumulated in…

Efficiency and timing performance of the MuPix7 high-voltage monolithic active pixel sensor

2018

The MuPix7 is a prototype high voltage monolithic active pixel sensor with 103 times 80 um2 pixels thinned to 64 um and incorporating the complete read-out circuitry including a 1.25 Gbit/s differential data link. Using data taken at the DESY electron test beam, we demonstrate an efficiency of 99.3% and a time resolution of 14 ns. The efficiency and time resolution are studied with sub-pixel resolution and reproduced in simulations.

Radiation Hardened Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry Distributed Temperature Fiber-Based Sensors

2015

International audience; We study the performance of Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) distributed temperature sensors using radiation resistant single-mode optical fibers. In situ experiments under 10 keV X-rays exposure up to 1 MGy( SiO 2 ) were carried out with an original setup that allows to investigate combined temperature and radiation effects on the sensors within a temperature range from 30 ° C to 250 ° C. Obtained results demonstrate that optical fiber sensors based on Rayleigh technique are almost unaffected by radiation up to the explored doses. We show that a pre-thermal treatment stabilize the sensor performance increasing the accuracy on temperature measurement fro…

Wireless Interference Estimation Using Machine Learning in a Robotic Force-Seeking Scenario

2019

Cyber-physical systems are systems governed by the laws of physics that are tightly controlled by computer-based algorithms and network-based sensing and actuation. Wireless communication technology is envisioned to play a primary role in conducting the information flows within such systems. A practical industrial wireless use case involving a robot manipulator control system, an integrated wireless force-torque sensor, and a remote vision-based observer is constructed and the performance of the cyber-physical system is examined. By using readings from the remote observer, an estimation system is developed using machine learning regression techniques. We demonstrate the practicality of comb…

Radiometric correction effects in Landsat multi‐date/multi‐sensor change detection studies

2006

Radiometric corrections serve to remove the effects that alter the spectral characteristics of land features, except for actual changes in ground target, becoming mandatory in multi‐sensor, multi‐date studies. In this paper, we evaluate the effects of two types of radiometric correction methods (absolute and relative) for the determination of land cover changes, using Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ images. In addition, we present an improvement made to the relative correction method addressed. Absolute correction includes a cross‐calibration between TM and ETM+ images, and the application of an atmospheric correction protocol. Relative correction normalizes the images using pseudo‐invariant fe…

Growth, Phenology, Production and Oil quality of the Cultivar Arbequina in high-density hedgerow in four different areas of Italy

2012

The success of the traditional olive-growing sector in EU countries – characterised by high production costs and a low selling price for the oil – was mainly determined by EU subsidies available for the sector. With the opening of the "free trade" area and a cut in subsidies in 2014, crucial changes in the sector are now needed. In order to increase the competitiveness of EU olive production, attention should be given to new high-yielding, mechanized cultivation systems. In the 90s, Spain introduced new high-density planting systems (1,200-2,000 plants/ha) using three low-vigour and early-fruiting cultivars (‘Arbequina’, ‘Arbosana’ and ‘Koroneiki’). Italian olive production lies in a geogra…
