Direct costs of glaucoma and severity of the disease: a multinational long term study of resource utilisation in Europe
2005
International audience; Background: Resource utilisation and direct costs associated with glaucoma progression in Europe are unknown. As population progressively ages, the economic impact of the disease will increase. Methods: From a total of 1655 consecutive cases, the records of 194 patients were selected and stratified by disease severity. Record selection was based on diagnoses of primary open angle glaucoma, glaucoma suspect, ocular hypertension, or normal tension glaucoma; 5 years minimum follow up were required. Glaucoma severity was assessed using a six stage glaucoma staging system based on static threshold visual field parameters. Resource utilisation data were abstracted from the…
Osmophobia as an early marker of migraine: a follow-up study in juvenile patients.
2012
Background: Osmophobia is frequent in children with migraine (20–35%) but can also occur in up to 14% of cases with tension-type headache (TTH). So far, the prognostic role of this symptom in children with primary headaches has never been evaluated. Methods: A longitudinal prospective study was conducted on 90 young patients with TTH (37 with osmophobia, 53 without osmophobia). We evaluated whether osmophobia could predict the diagnosis transformation from TTH to migraine after a 3-year follow-up. Results and Discussion: In our cases the rate of diagnosis change was significantly greater in cases with osmophobia (62%) than in those without (23%). Osmophobia persisted at a 3-year follow-up …
Interrelationship between demethylation of p-nitroanisole and conjugation of p-nitrophenol in rat liver
1973
The metabolism of p-nitroanisole (pNA) and p-nitrophenol (pNP) was studied in isolated rat livers perfused with a hemoglobin-free medium. The activity and viability of the surviving organ was tested by recording pH, “arterial” and “venous” oxygen tension as well as the disappearance of added pNP. pNA is converted to its primary metabolite pNP which, in turn, is excreted into the perfusion medium as conjugates. The coordination of pNA oxidation and the conjugation reactions of pNP were investigated. When 50 μM pNA is added as substrate 0.4±0.1 nmoles×ml−1×(g liver)−1 are excreted as pNP-glucuronide and 3.5±0.2 nmoles×ml−1×(g liver)−1 as the sulphate within 90 min. When pNP itself (50 μM) is …
Comparison of two artificial tear formulations for dry eye through high‐resolution optical coherence tomography
2011
Purpose: The aim was to determine the efficacy of two artificial eye-drop formulations by analysing the lower tear film meniscus volume through a commercial high-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer. Methods: Twenty dry eye patients (12 men, eight women, aged 57.5 ± 8.4 years) with refractive errors from -2.50 to +0.75 D (mean -1.34 ± 1.02 D) and cylinders lower than 1.00 D were examined. Tear meniscus volume was measured before, immediately after and 10, 30 and 60 minutes after instillation using the Copernicus high-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer (Optopol Tech SA, Zawiercie, Poland). Volume was calculated from the local area obtained from tom…
Effect of a closed foldable equator ring on capsular bag shrinkage in cataract surgery.
2005
To evaluate the effect of a closed foldable equator ring (CFER) versus a conventional capsular tension ring (CTR) on capsular bag shrinkage.Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. In this prospective study, 70 eyes of 70 patients were randomized to 2 groups using a 1:1 block scheme. After uneventful cataract surgery, a capsular measuring ring was implanted in all eyes to measure the capsular bag diameter in vivo. In Group 1, a CTR was implanted in the capsular bag. In Group 2, a CFER was inserted. Biometric characteristics such as axial length and the horizontal and vertical corneal radii were measured preoperatively. The capsular bag diameter and capsulor…
Analytical Study of the Thermal Induced Oscillations Known as Heartbeats
1998
Abstract A laser beam traveling horizontally at a short distance below the free surface of an absorbing solution exhibits various oscillatory states (periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic) which depend on both the buoyancy (Archimedes force) and the thermal coefficient of the surface tension (Marangoni effect). The beam oscillations have been called “heartbeats.” In this work, the heartbeats were produced by pumping 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) solutions in silicone oil with an Ar+continuous-wave laser beam. The relationships between PAN concentration and the other parameters that control the oscillatory behavior were studied. The frequency of the oscillations sensitively varied with sm…
Inclusion complexes of triblock L35 copolymer and hydroxyl propyl cyclodextrins: a physico-chemical study
2022
In this work, we studied the formation of supramolecular inclusion complexes (pseudopolyrotaxanes) generated by the interactions between L35 Pluronic (PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer) and hydroxyl propyl-modified cyclodextrins (HP-alpha-CD and HP-beta-CD). The structural characteristics of the L35/CD composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, which highlighted the effective inclusion of the copolymer. The thermodynamic properties of the pseudopolyrotaxanes were determined through density and speed of sound experiments conducted on aqueous mixtures with various L35/CD compositions, while turbidimetric analyses allowed the investigation of the kinetics of the threading pro…
Research Regarding Uniaxial Tensile Strength of Nylon Woven Fabrics, Coated and Uncoated with Silicone
2019
Properties of woven fabrics used to make airbag cushions are influenced by a lot of factors: the nature of raw materials, woven fabric geometry and density, technological parameters of the weaving operation and finishing. The main purpose of this research paper is to find the values of three mechanical parameters – tensile strain, tensile stress and specific modulus – according to the type of samples and test direction on the testing stand. To obtain woven fabric samples were used polyamide 6-6 polyfilament yarns (nylon), silicone coated and uncoated fabric. Testing procedure and samples preparation were done following the standard EN ISO 13934-1:1999. Test results and graphs show that, we …
Mg impurity in helium droplets.
2011
Within the diffusion Monte Carlo approach, we have determined the structure of isotopically pure and mixed helium droplets doped with one magnesium atom. For pure 4He clusters, our results confirm those of M. Mella et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 123, 054328 (2005)] that the impurity experiences a transition from a surface to a bulk location as the number of helium atoms in the droplet increases. Contrarily, for pure 3He clusters Mg resides in the bulk of the droplet due to the smaller surface tension of this isotope. Results for mixed droplets are presented. We have also obtained the absorption spectrum of Mg around the 3s3p 1P_1 <-- 3s2 1S_0 transition.
Gradient-enhanced model and its micromorphic regularization for simulation of Lüders-like bands in shape memory alloys
2018
Abstract Shape memory alloys, notably NiTi, often exhibit softening pseudoelastic response that results in formation and propagation of Luders-like bands upon loading, for instance, in uniaxial tension. A common approach to modelling softening and strain localization is to resort to gradient-enhanced formulations that are capable of restoring well-posedness of the boundary-value problem. This approach is also followed in the present paper by introducing a gradient-enhancement into a simple one-dimensional model of pseudoelasticity. In order to facilitate computational treatment, a micromorphic-type regularization of the gradient-enhanced model is subsequently performed. The formulation empl…
