Textbooks as ‘Neoliberal artifacts’: a critical study of knowledge-making in ELT industry
2022
The present study examined the traces of neoliberal ideology in O-level English language textbooks taught in elitist private schools in Pakistan that follow the UK-based international educational system administrated by the University of Cambridge under the General Certificate of Education (GCE). Analysis in the study was informed by Fairclough's CDA writings. Moreover, Bourdieu's views on neoliberalism were also considered to shed some light on neoliberal ideology in the textbooks. Creating an image of people with disabilities in formal education. Analysis of the textbooks used in the chosen European countries
2016
Creating an image of people with disabilities in formal education is an important element of educating young people into a full and unbiased understanding of the needs and reality of these people. Consequently, it is an element of creating a social climate around people with disabilities and influencing state policy in this area. Therefore, I find it extremely important to analyse and compare ideas worked out in different countries in order to correctly assess our own situation and find inspiring and applicable solutions. In the text, I focused on one component of the system of formal education, i.e. selected textbooks used in Poland and Sweden in which I highlighted their disability-relate…
La storia, gli storici
2012
“Enymärä”: Thoughts on the use of Finnish as the majority language in locally published EFL activity books
2017
It has been a long tradition in Finland to use locally published textbooks in primary foreign language education. The books have been designed for linguistically homogenous groups of students, which explains why Finnish, as the learners’ L1, is the instructive metalanguage chosen for the EFL activity books. However, the growing number of immigrant children in the Finnish educational system raises the question to what extent these activity books can serve the needs of linguistically more diverse groups of learners. The connection between the two languages is so strong that Finnish seems to serve as a precondition for the acquisition of English. The high proportion of tasks requiring fluency …
Aussprachetraining im DaF-Unterricht in der Lehr- und Lernwelt 3.0.
2018
Everyone who acquires a new language at school or elsewhere has the right to learn good pronunciation. As phonetic errors are foreseeable, this paper begins by delineating deviations in (co)articulation and prosody which are typical of Italian learners of German, with the aim of examining how far these specific, predictable phonetic problems are treated in German textbooks used in Italy. The study shows that even modern textbooks do not consider phonetics in a satisfactory way. Today’s learning world 3.0 – not only interactive, but also shaped for the individual learner – is characterized by a growing number of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and special Computer Assisted Pronunc…
