Iedomu valodas: H.F. Lavkrafta grāmatas “Kthulhu aicinājums” un tās latviskā tulkojuma analīze
2020

Unwanted Literal Translation: An Underdiscussed Problem in International Achievement Studies
2012
In international achievement studies, a common test is typically used which is translated into the languages of the participating countries. For the test to be valid, all the translations and different-language test versions need to be equally difficult to read and answer. An underestimated and underdiscussed threat to this validity is unwanted literal translation. This paper discusses the problem of unwanted literal translation in international achievement studies. It defines what is meant by unwanted literal translation and explains why it is a threat to the validity of international achievement studies and why it is so difficult to avoid. It also discusses problems there have been when t…
Retranslating The Second Sex into Finnish : Choices, Practices, and Ideas
2017
Finnish is one of the few existent Finno-Ugric languages, a language without articles, and with only one, genderless word for the pronouns “she” and “he”. Due to this, the problems faced by the Finnish translators of The Second Sex differed in some ways from those discussed after the publication of the new English translation. This chapter describes the genesis of the second, unabridged Finnish translation, the choices made by the translators as well as the philosophical interpretations motivating those choices. In addition, Beauvoir’s way of understanding the concept of becoming is analyzed. The chapter ends with a discussion of the philosophy of translation and of the reception of the sec…
Is There Any Hope for Developing Automated Translation Technology for Sign Languages?
2021
This article discusses the prerequisites for the machine translation of sign languages. The topic is complex, including questions relating to technology, interaction design, linguistics and culture. At the moment, despite the affordances provided by the technology, automated translation between signed and spoken languages – or between sign languages – is not possible. The very need of such translation and its associated technology can also be questioned. Yet, we believe that contributing to the improvement of sign language detection, processing and even sign language translation to spoken languages in the future is a matter that should not be abandoned. However, we argue that this work shou…

Exploring Skopos in the Dutch Dubbed Versions of the Songs of Disney's Frozen
2018
An important part in dubbing an animated musical film – as in any translation – is setting a purpose (perhaps subconsciously) for that particular project and establishing a set of priorities to achieve that purpose. This article investigates the purpose, or skopos, of the dubbing process of the Dutch songs from the 2013 Disney film Frozen, and analyses the effect of those skopi on the songs. This analysis uses the triangle of aspects, a comprehensive model to compare a dubbed version of a song to the original on several important aspects, such as rhythm, lip synchrony, and sense. It is found that the Dutch songs differ most from the originals on semantic aspects, while they are most similar…
A kétnyelvűség lenyomatai : Célnyelvi interferenciák Terézia Mora Das Ungeheuer című regényében és magyar fordításában
2018
The German writer Terézia Mora (1971) grew up with a double, Hungarian-German linguistic identity. She reflects on her own bilingualism in many ways, also on the micro level of the text. How can this linguistic duality be kept in the Hungarian translation? What translation strategies are to be applied in order to keep the intentional foreignness of the original in the Hungarian target text, if this foreignness is produced by using the very characteristics of the Hungarian language in the German original? This case study focuses on the reflection of bilingualism and the translation problems arising from reflection in literary texts by studying examples taken from the novel Das Ungeheuer by T…
