BRAF-V600E expression in precursor versus differentiated dendritic cells defines clinically distinct LCH risk groups.

2014

BRAF-V600E expression is identified in hematopoietic progenitor and precursor myeloid dendritic cells in patients with high-risk LCH, and enforced expression of BRAF-V600E in CD11c+ cells recapitulates a high-risk LCH-like phenotype in mice.

Survey on treatments for primary headaches in 13 specialized juvenile Headache Centers: The first multicenter Italian study

2017

Abstract Aim The purpose of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate the use and the self-perceived efficacy and tolerability of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in children and adolescents with primary headaches. Methods Study of a cohort of children and adolescents diagnosed with primary headache, consecutively referred to 13 juvenile Italian Headache Centers. An ad hoc questionnaire was used for clinical data collection. Results Among 706 patients with primary headaches included in the study, 637 cases with a single type of headache (migraine 76% – with and without aura in 10% and 67% respectively; tension-type headache 24%) were selected (mean age at clinic…

Arsenic exposure and human blood DNA methylation and hydroxymethylation profiles in two diverse populations from Bangladesh and Spain.

2021

Abstract Background Associations of arsenic (As) with the sum of 5-mC and 5-hmC levels have been reported; however, As exposure-related differences of the separated 5-mC and 5-hmC markers have rarely been studied. Methods In this study, we evaluated the association of arsenic exposure biomarkers and 5-mC and 5-hmC in 30 healthy men (43–55 years) from the Aragon Workers Health Study (AWHS) (Spain) and 31 healthy men (31–50 years) from the Folic Acid and Creatinine Trial (FACT) (Bangladesh). We conducted 5-mC and 5-hmC profiling using Infinium MethylationEPIC arrays, on paired standard and modified (ox-BS in AWHS and TAB in FACT) bisulfite converted blood DNA samples. Results The median for t…

Transgraft sac Embolization Combined with Graft Reinforcement for Refractory Mixed-Type Endoleak.

2018

International audience; An 80-year-old female underwent EVAR 4 years ago. She presented type II endoleak with sac expansion from 68 to 80 mm during 3-year follow-up after EVAR. Although she underwent translumbar percutaneous sac embolization, the AAA sac continued to enlarge, suggesting mixed-type endoleak including type I, II, and III. Transgraft direct sac angiography revealed endoleak cavity without demonstrable feeding vessel. Transgraft sac embolization using n-butyl cyanoacrylate and graft reinforcement was performed concurrently, without complications. The graft reinforcement consisted of graft extension for eliminating occult type I endoleak, and relining for eliminating occult type…

L-type calcium channel activity in human atrial myocytes as influenced by 5-HT.

1993

5-Hydroxytryptamine (10 mumol/l; 5-HT) exerted a positive inotropic effect associated with an increase in the Ca2+ current (ICa) in the human right atrium. For detailed analysis, L-type Ca2+ channel currents were recorded from cell-attached patches using 100 mmol/l Ba2+ as charge carrier. Ca2+ channel activity was identified, first, by burst-like inwardly directed currents and, second, by the appearance of long channel openings promoted by Bay K 8644 (1 mumol/l) upon repetitive depolarizations from -80 to 0 mV. The unitary conductance of the Ca2+ channel amounted to 25.8 pS. During superfusion with 5-HT, ensemble averaged (mean) current was enhanced by about 60%. The increase in mean curren…

Natriuretic peptide system expression in murine and human submandibular salivary glands: a study of the spatial localisation of ANB, BNP, CNP and the…

2019

AbstractThe natriuretic peptide (NP) system comprises of three ligands, the Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP), Brain Natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type Natriuretic peptide (CNP), and three natriuretic peptide receptors, NPRA, NPRB and NPRC. Here we present a comprehensive study of the natriuretic peptide system in healthy murine and human submandibular salivary glands (SMGs). We show CNP is the dominant NP in mouse and human SMG and is expressed together with NP receptors in ducts, autonomic nerves and the microvasculature of the gland, suggesting CNP autocrine signalling may take place in some of these glandular structures. These data suggest the NP system may control salivary gland funct…

High concentration of C-type natriuretic peptide promotes VEGF-dependent vasculogenesis in the remodeled region of infarcted swine heart with preserv…

2013

Vasculogenesis is a hallmark of myocardial restoration. Post-ischemic late remodeling is associated with pathology and function worsening. At the same time, neo-vasculogenesis helps function improving and requires the release of vascular endothelial growth factor type A (VEGF-A). The vasculogenic role of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), a cardiac paracrine hormone, is unknown in infarcted hearts with preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF). We explored whether myocardial VEGF-dependent vasculogenesis is affected by CNP.To this end, infarcted swine hearts were investigated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), histological and molecular assays. At the fourth week, MRI showed t…

Prevalence of primary headaches in Italian elderly: Preliminary data from the Zabút Aging Project

2003

We describe preliminary 1-year prevalence data of recurrent migraine headache (MH), tension-type headache (TTH), and other headaches (OH) in a rural elderly population. A door-to-door two-phase survey was conducted on all elderly (or=65 years) residents of a rural village in southern Italy. Participants underwent a two-phase screening including a validated semi-structured questionnaire for headaches based on the International Headache Society criteria, and a neurological evaluation. Recurrent headache was defined as 3 or more attacks within the past 12 months. Out of 1031 participants evaluated, 225 (21.8%) suffered from recurrent headaches. One-year prevalence rates for headaches were resp…

Osmophobia as an early marker of migraine: a follow-up study in juvenile patients.

2012

Background: Osmophobia is frequent in children with migraine (20–35%) but can also occur in up to 14% of cases with tension-type headache (TTH). So far, the prognostic role of this symptom in children with primary headaches has never been evaluated. Methods: A longitudinal prospective study was conducted on 90 young patients with TTH (37 with osmophobia, 53 without osmophobia). We evaluated whether osmophobia could predict the diagnosis transformation from TTH to migraine after a 3-year follow-up. Results and Discussion: In our cases the rate of diagnosis change was significantly greater in cases with osmophobia (62%) than in those without (23%). Osmophobia persisted at a 3-year follow-up …

Delayed-type hypersensitivity in classic Kaposi sarcoma patients and controls

2011

Background: Immune perturbation likely affects the development of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) among people infected with the KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). We tested whether KSHV-seropositive individuals or cases of classic KS (cKS), which typically originates in the leg, had differing delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) in the forearm or leg. Methods: Mantoux DTH with three antigens (Candida, tetanus, PPD) was performed on the forearm and leg of 15 cKS cases, 14 KSHV-positives without KS, and 15 KSHV-negative controls. The diameters of induration responses were compared by group and body site. Results: Leg DTH was greater than forearm DTH among controls (mean difference 5.6 mm, P=0.0004), where…
