1988

Analysing and measuring equity in the education system has been the bread and butter of large number of sociological pieces of research. They are often based on the computation of selectivity indices (according to SES sex...) at given level of education higher education for example. The paper shows that these measures ignore the scarcity of resources existing in the education system. More precisely they ignore the structural dimension of the overall school organization allocation of resources between levels on the one hand quality choices at each level on the other which constitutes the shell itself more or less equalitarian within which are nested the various types of selectivity as they a…

2016

The recent mobilization of estranged fathers in France is the expression of a cause that emerged in the 1970s, following the feminist mobilizations of that time. InEurope, as in North America, these groups denounced a family justice that seemingly favours women by awarding them custody of the children and by relegatingfathers to provider status, in terms of child-support payments. While these fathers hold egalitarian claims in promoting the sharing of a child’s education after the parents’ separation, their actions and discourses effectively support the traditional family unit by denouncing the ‘‘catastrophic’’ consequences of divorce on children. In light of a France-Que´bec comparison, we…

Teacher students’ meaningful learning in widening learning worlds

2019

This qualitative metasynthesis investigated students’ meaningful learning experiences amid andragogical teacher education programmes. The programmes catered to the specific learning needs of adult students in the context of university-based teacher education. This study aimed to provide a wider picture of the frames of students’ meaningful learning in andragogical teacher education programmes. The findings revealed three major learning worlds of adult students’ meaningful learning, which formed a common system widening from the professional awakening to the transformative community and agency in society. Based on the findings, this study argues that in andragogical teacher education, which …

Instruction of Digital Reading Strategies Based on Eye-Movements Modeling Examples

2018

During the last decade, several studies have proposed and tested different instructional methods for teaching digital reading strategies to young students. In this study, we have tested the effectiveness of a program combining eye-movements modeling examples (EMMEs) and contrasting cases to instruct ninth-grade students how to plan, evaluate, and monitor their digital reading. EMMEs are videos that display a dot representing the eye movements of a model and an oral transcription of her thoughts while answering a specific question in a hypertext. Students in the EMME condition obtain higher comprehension scores in a posttest performed 1 week after the instruction, as compared with a control…

On Ignoring the Random Effects Assumption in Multilevel Models: Review, Critique, and Recommendations

2019

Entities such as individuals, teams, or organizations can vary systematically from one another. Researchers typically model such data using multilevel models, assuming that the random effects are uncorrelated with the regressors. Violating this testable assumption, which is often ignored, creates an endogeneity problem thus preventing causal interpretations. Focusing on two-level models, we explain how researchers can avoid this problem by including cluster means of the Level 1 explanatory variables as controls; we explain this point conceptually and with a large-scale simulation. We further show why the common practice of centering the predictor variables is mostly unnecessary. Moreover, …

2021

International audience; What exactly do evaluators learn about programs through experience and how? We chose a constructivist framework to investigate the structure of evaluators’ program-related knowledge, namely the form, content, and origins of their expressed theories. In this context, we complemented a Piagetian theory of learning with new developments offered by “probabilistic” (or “Bayesian”) models of learning. We conducted “explicitation” interviews with nine experienced practitioners, some specializing in the education or agri-environment sectors and some generalists. After examining the form and content of their program-related knowledge, we examine its development through experi…

On-line quizzes to evaluate comprehension and integration skills

2016

[EN] This work demonstrates the use of a 2.0 tool, namely, Socrative, to evaluate one of the cross-curricular competences indicated by the Universitat Politècnica de València, specifically, comprehension and integration. It has been applied to the courses in different areas: sciences, engineering and languages. As part of its implementation, activities were proposed that could be done at the beginning, during or at the end of the class to, on the one hand, help students acquire the knowledge associated with the course(s), and on the other, gather evidence that demonstrates acquisition of said competence. The results show a high level of satisfaction by the students with the use of the Socra…
