One-dimensional nonlinear boundary value problems with variable exponent

In this paper, a class of nonlinear differential boundary value problems with variable exponent is investigated. The existence of at least one non-zero solution is established, without assuming on the nonlinear term any condition either at zero or at infinity. The approach is developed within the framework of the Orlicz-Sobolev spaces with variable exponent and it is based on a local minimum theorem for differentiable functions.

Dual Inequalities for Stabilized Column Generation Revisited

Column generation (CG) models have several advantages over compact formulations: they provide better linear program bounds, may eliminate symmetry, and can hide nonlinearities in their subproblems. Twitter sentiment as a weak signal in venture capital financing

Abstract How do venture capitalists (VCs) incorporate weak and strong signals in the valuation of technology-based startups? Based on a sociocognitive perspective of signaling theory, we introduce Twitter sentiment as a novel and weak signal, which we juxtapose with patents as a traditional, strong signal. While we find a positive association between both signals and VCs' venture valuations, our results reveal that Twitter sentiment does not correlate with actual long-term investment success, whereas patents do. Highly transitive actions of groups acting on trees

We show that a group acting on a non-trivial tree with finite edge stabilizers and icc vertex stabilizers admits a faithful and highly transitive action on an infinite countable set. This result is actually true for infinite vertex stabilizers and some more general, finite of infinite, edge stabilizers that we call highly core-free. We study the notion of highly core-free subgroups and give some examples. In the case of amalgamated free products over highly core-free subgroups and HNN extensions with highly core-free base groups we obtain a genericity result for faithful and highly transitive actions. The formation of new blood vessels and the establishment of vascular networks are crucial during brain development, in the adult healthy brain, as well as in various diseases of the central nervous system. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of the Mytilus galloprovincialis lysozyme gene in different in vivo stress situations, including injection of bacteria Vibrio splendidus LGP32, Vibrio anguillarum or Micrococcus lysodeikticus, as well as heat shock at 30 C and cold stress at 5 C. Injection of V. splendidus LGP32 resulted in: (i) a general down-regulation of lysozyme gene expression, as quantified by Q-PCR; (ii) reduction in the number of circulating hemocytes; (iii) decrease in the percentage of circulating hemocytes expressing lysozyme mRNA which was now restricted to only small cells, as observed by ISH; and (iv) accumulation of hemocytes expressing lysozyme in t…

To See More: A Model for Press Photograph Story Analysis

AbstractThis article presents and evaluates an interdisciplinary model for press photograph story analysis. The research comprised two stages: (i) familiarizing study participants with the interpretation model and (ii) qualitative content analysis of the participants’ interpretations of samples of press photograph stories. The result is that the model could be used in the educational context to develop the skills of visual literacy among students. Although the study opens new directions in visual methodologies, the model requires further development.

Attempt to Construct a Scale for the Measurement of the Effect of Suggestion on Perception1

A scale based on experimental methods has been prepared for measuring the effects of indirect suggestion upon perception. Three categories are included: (1) distorting the interpretation of presented stimuli, (2) inducing sense-impressions in the absence of adequate stimuli, and (3) producing insensitivity to stimuli that are objectively present. Test situations were designed for tactual, auditory, and visual perception. The scale was tested on a sample of 112 students from the 11th and 12th grades of a large city high school (58 girls and 54 boys).
