Synthesis, structural characterization, anti-proliferative and antimicrobial activity of binuclear and mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with perfluoroalk…

2018

Abstract In this paper we report the synthesis of four Pt(II) complexes with 5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl-pyridine and 3-perfluoroalkyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazolyl-pyridine ligands. Two binuclear complexes [PtCl(pfibap)2](µ-Cl)2 (1), [Pt2(µ-Cl)2(pfioap)4]Cl2 (2), and two mononuclear [PtCl2(pfptp)] (3), [PtCl2(pfhtp)2] (4), were synthesized with the ligands: 2-(5-perfluoropropyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3yl)-pyridine (pfpop), 2-(5-perfluoroheptyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3yl)-pyridine (pfhop), 2-(3-perfluoropropyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfptp), 2-(3-perfluoroheptyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfhtp), and were structurally characterized. All complexes were tested in vitro on th…

Facile crosslinking of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) by electro-oxidation with IrO2-based anode under potentiostatic conditions

2018

Abstract: The modification of polymer architectures by reaction with chemically adsorbed hydroxyl radicals has been thoroughly investigated by electrolyzing dilute aqueous solutions of the biocompatible polymer poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), using an undivided electrolytic cell with a Ti/IrO2–Ta2O5(DSA®) anode. Several electrolyses were performed to assess the influence of the applied potential, the circulated charge and the PVP concentration, which was always kept low to avoid chain overlapping. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the electro-oxidation of PVP solutions using a cheap anode is an effective method to crosslink initially isolated polymer chains, eventually incre…

Wide range excitation of visible luminescence in nanosilica

2010

The visible luminescence of nanometer-sized silica particles (7 nm mean diameter) was investigated using time resolved spectroscopy. This luminescence is characterized by a wide excitation in the visible and ultraviolet range. The emission spectrum is centred at 2.72 eV with a full width at half maximum of 0.70 eV when excited above 3.5 eV, whereas it progressively empties on the high energy side when excited below 3.5 eV. Moreover, the lifetime falls in the ns timescale and decreases on increasing the emission energy. These features are due to the exceptionally broad inhomogeneous distribution of the emitting centres peculiar to the silica nanoparticles. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights res…

Development of an Electrochemical Balance to Measure Quantitatively Hydrogen Generation during Electrochemical Processes

2017

A new method to measure the amount of hydrogen generated from the surface of an immersed electrode is presented in this work. The method consists of a mechanical balance with a horizontal arm attached to two hydrogen-collecting containers that are submerged in two independent electrochemical cells. One of the two cells (the test cell) contains the electrode of interest, generating an unknown amount of hydrogen, whereas the other cell (the measurement cell) contains an inert electrode that is used to evolve an amount of hydrogen equal to that generated in the test cell, such as the mechanical equilibrium between the sides of the balance is constantly maintained. Adequate electrical connectio…

Photocatalytic partial oxidation of limonene to 1,2 limonene oxide

2018

The silylation of crystalline TiO2 P25, commonly used for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, results in an exceptionally selective catalyst for the aerobic limonene epoxidation to 1,2-limonene oxide under solar light irradiation. The hypothesized mechanism involves the singlet oxygen generated through energy transfer from the excited TiO2 to adsorbed O2 molecules. The reaction product is the valued precursor of bio-based poly(limonene carbonate), a thermoplastic polymer of superior thermal and optical properties whose industrial production is in need of an efficient green synthesis of limonene oxide.

Zn(II) and Ni(II) complexes with poly-histidyl peptides derived from a snake venom

2018

Abstract The snake venoms are complex mixtures containing many bioactive peptides and proteins; some of them are aimed to protect the snake glands, where the venom is stored, until the latter is inoculated in the victim. In the venom of some vipers of the genus Atheris , a set of peptides containing poly-His and poly-Gly segments was recently found. Poly-His peptides are not rare in Nature. Although their exact biological function is most often unknown, one thing is certain: they have good binding properties towards the transition metal ions. As a matter of fact, the imidazole side chain of histidine is one of the groups most frequently involved in metal complexation in the active sites of …

Selective targeting of PARP-1 zinc finger recognition domains with Au(III) organometallics

2018

The binding of Au(iii) complexes to the zinc finger domain of the anticancer drug target PARP-1 was studied using a hyphenated mass spectrometry approach combined with quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) studies. Competition experiments were carried out, whereby each Au complex was exposed to two types of zinc fingers. Notably, the cyclometallated Au-C^N complex was identified as the most selective candidate to disrupt the PARP-1 zinc finger domain, forming distinct adducts compared to the coordination compound Auphen.

Temporal control of xyloglucan self-assembly into layered structures by radiation-induced degradation

2016

Partially degalactosylated xyloglucan from tamarind seeds (Deg-XG) is a very appealing biopolymer for the production of in situ gelling systems at physiological temperature. In this work, we observe that the morphology of hydrogels evolves towards high degrees of structural organization with time, yielding to dense stacks of thin membranes within 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. We also explore the possibility offered by gamma irradiation of controlling the time scale of this phenomenon, the final morphology and mechanical properties of the system. Structural and molecular modifications of Deg-XG with dose are investigated by FTIR, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rotational viscosimetry. The…

Hyaluronic Acid-Based Micelles as Ocular Platform to Modulate the Loading, Release, and Corneal Permeation of Corticosteroids

2017

The aim of this work is to prepare hyaluronic acid-based micelles as a platform to load corticosteroid drugs and to improve their corneal permeation after administration on the ocular surface. Three amphiphilic derivatives of hyaluronic acid (HA) are synthesized using different amounts of hexadecylamine (C16 -NH2 ). HAC16 a, HAC16 b, and HAC16 c derivatives are able to form micelles by the cosolvent evaporation method and to entrap corticosteroids (dexamethasone, triamcinolone, triamcinolone acetonide). HAC16 a and HAC16 b micelles show the best results in terms of drug loading and particle size. They are also able to improve drug release compared to free drug solution or suspension. In add…
