Ocular Motor Paroxysmal Events in Neonates and Infants: A Review of the Literature

2021

Abstract Background Ocular paroxysmal events can accompany a variety of neurological disorders. Particularly in infants, ocular paroxysmal events often represent a diagnostic challenge. Distinguishing between epileptic and nonepileptic events or between physiological and pathologic paroxysmal events can be challenging at this age because the clinical evaluation and physical examination are often limited. Continuous polygraphic video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring can be helpful in these situations. Methods We review ocular paroxysmal events in newborns and infants. The aim is to improve clinical recognition of ocular paroxysmal events and provide a guide to further management. Usin…

Increased percentages of calprotectin and TNF-Α double-positive monocytes in the acute phase of Kawasaki disease

2011

Background The acute phase of KD is characterized by a deficiency of suppressor T cells, marked activation of the immune system and increased secretion of cytokines by immune effector cells. Moreover, it has been shown that myeloid-related protein (MRP-8 and MRP-14) and S100proteins, the major calcium-binding proteins secreted by activated neutrophils and monocytes, contribute to cause inflammation in acute lesions of KD, and indeed one of the more common hematological alteration in KD is the increase of peripheral blood monocytes. Calprotectin, one of the major calcium-binding proteins, can lead to direct and indirect effects that result not only in inflammation but also in modification of…

Behavioral and psychological effects of coronavirus disease-19 quarantine in patients with dementia

2020

Background: In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and several governments planned a national quarantine in order to control the virus spread. Acute psychological effects of quarantine in frail elderly subjects with special needs, such as patients with dementia, have been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess modifications of neuropsychiatric symptoms during quarantine in patients with dementia and their caregivers. Methods: This is a sub-study of a multicenter nation-wide survey. A structured telephone interview was delivered to family caregivers of patients with diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD),…

Cancer in the first 18 months of life

2020

Introduction: Oncological-haematological disease continues to be the first cause of non-traumatic mortality in childhood, as well as a significant cause of morbidity. The patient less than 18-months-old has special clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic features that all paediatricians are interested in determining, with the aim of achieving greater survival and a lower morbidity throughout the lives of their patients. Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive study was carried out using the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic variables in patients less than 18-months-old diagnosed with an oncological-haematological that received chemotherapy in a Paediatric Oncology Unit between …

Oxygen in the neonatal period: Oxidative stress, oxygen load and epigenetic changes

2020

Preterm infants frequently require positive pressure ventilation and oxygen supplementation in the first minutes after birth. It has been shown that the amount of oxygen provided during stabilization, the oxygen load, if excessive may cause hyperoxia, and oxidative damage to DNA. Epidemiologic studies have associated supplementation with pure oxygen in the first minutes after birth with childhood cancer. Recent studies have shown that the amount of oxygen supplemented to preterm infants after birth modifies the epigenome. Of note, the degree of DNA hyper-or hypomethylation correlates with the oxygen load provided upon stabilization. If these epigenetic modifications would persist, oxygen su…
