2019
This paper investigates wave climate and storm characteristics along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, for the period 1979&ndash
Dune systems' characterization and evolution in the andalusia mediterranean coast (Spain)
2020
This paper deals with the characterization and evolution of dune systems along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, in the South of Spain, a first step to assess their relevant value in coastal flood protection and in the determination of sound management strategies to protect such valuable ecological systems. Different dune types were mapped as well as dune toe position and fragmentation, which favors dune sensitivity to storms&rsquo
Future Climate Forcings and Olive Yield in a Mediterranean Orchard
2014
The olive tree is one of the most characteristic rainfed trees in the Mediterranean region. Observed and forecasted climate modifications in this region, such as the CO2 concentration and temperature increase and the net radiation, rainfall and wind speed decrease, will likely alter vegetation water stress and modify productivity. In order to simulate how climatic change could alter soil moisture dynamic, biomass growth and fruit productivity, a water-driven crop model has been used in this study. The numerical model, previously calibrated on an olive orchard located in Sicily (Italy) with a satisfactory reproduction of historical olive yield data, has been forced with future climate scenar…
Treatment of Oily Wastewater with Membrane Bioreactor Systems
2017
The aim of the present work was to investigate the behavior of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system for the treatment of oily wastewater. A bench scale MBR was fed with synthetic wastewater containing diesel fuel. Organic carbon, hydrocarbon and ammonium removal, kinetic constants, extracellular polymeric substances production, and membrane fouling rates were monitored. The MBR plant was operated for more than 200 days, and the results highlighted good carbon removal and nitrification, suggesting a sort of biomass adaptation to hydrocarbons. Membrane fouling analysis showed an increase in total resistance, likely due to hydrocarbons, which caused an irreversible fouling (pore blocking) mainly…
The soluble loop BC region guides, but not dictates, the assembly of the transmembrane cytochrome b6
2017
Studying folding and assembly of naturally occurring α-helical transmembrane proteins can inspire the design of membrane proteins with defined functions. Thus far, most studies have focused on the role of membrane-integrated protein regions. However, to fully understand folding pathways and stabilization of α–helical membrane proteins, it is vital to also include the role of soluble loops. We have analyzed the impact of interhelical loops on folding, assembly and stability of the heme-containing four-helix bundle transmembrane protein cytochrome b6 that is involved in charge transfer across biomembranes. Cytochrome b6 consists of two transmembrane helical hairpins that sandwich two heme mol…
On the Shape-Selected, Ligand-Free Preparation of Hybrid Perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) Microcrystals and Their Suitability as Model-System for Single-Crys…
2021
Hybrid perovskite materials are one of the most promising candidates for optoelectronic applications, e.g., solar cells and LEDs, which can be produced at low cost compared to established materials. Although this field of research has seen a huge upsurge in the past decade, there is a major lack in understanding the underlying processes, such as shape-property relationships and the role of defects. Our aerosol-assisted synthesis pathway offers the possibility to obtain methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3 ) microcrystals from a liquid single source precursor. The differently shaped particles are aligned on several substrates, without using a directing agent or other additives. The obtained …
Two Teletraffic-based Schemes for Energy Saving in Cellular Networks with Micro-cells
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: Journal of Communications. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4304/jcm.7.10.726-739 Open access The energy consumption of Base Stations (BSs) is known to constitute a major part of the power consumption in a cellular network. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which may switch a BS off under light traffic conditions in order to conserve the power consumption of such networks. More specifically, when the traffic load in the middle cell of a network with three micro-cells is sufficiently low, the corresponding BS can be switched off and its users will be covered by increasing the transmission power of one sector a…
Urban MEMS based seismic network for post-earthquakes rapid disaster assessment
2014
Abstract. In this paper, we introduce a project for the realization of the first European real-time urban seismic network based on Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. MEMS accelerometers are a highly enabling technology, and nowadays, the sensitivity and the dynamic range of these sensors are such as to allow the recording of earthquakes of moderate magnitude even at a distance of several tens of kilometers. Moreover, thanks to their low cost and smaller size, MEMS accelerometers can be easily installed in urban areas in order to achieve an urban seismic network constituted by high density of observation points. The network is being implemented in the Acireale Municipality (…
Implementing Intellectual Property Policies in a Romanian State University
2018
The paper presents a series of contributions on the possibility of implementing intellectual property policies in a Romanian State University. Starting with the worldwide, well-known examples of universities with a tradition in this field of intellectual property protection, the paper presents practical solutions for the implementation of some intellectual property policies taking into account the mentality which currently exists in Romania on this subject. The study is based on the important experience gained by authors in a European research project involving 15 partners from 9 countries, where the results were remarkable. The University must represent a pole of excellence in research, bu…
Rapid hyperpolarization and purification of the metabolite fumarate in aqueous solution
2020
Significance Magnetic resonance imaging is hindered by inherently low sensitivity, which limits the method for the most part to observing water molecules in the body. Hyperpolarized molecules exhibit strongly enhanced MRI signals which opens the door for imaging low-concentration species in vivo. Biomolecules can be hyperpolarized and injected into a patient allowing for metabolism to be tracked in real time, greatly expanding the information available to the radiologist. Parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) is a hyperpolarization method renowned for its low cost and accessibility, but is generally limited by low polarization levels, modest molecular concentrations, and contamination by…
