Help! Is my Chatbot Falling into the Uncanny Valley? : An Empirical Study of User Experience in Human-Chatbot Interaction
2019
Original article available at http://dx.doi.org/10.17011/ht/urn.201902201607 Advances in artificial intelligence strengthen chatbots’ ability to resemble human conversational agents. For some application areas, it may be tempting not to be transparent regarding a conversational agent’s nature as chatbot or human. However, the uncanny valley theory suggests that such lack in transparency may cause uneasy feelings in the user. In this study, we combined quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate this issue. First, we used a 2 x 2 experimental research design (n = 28) to investigate effects of lack in transparency on the perceived pleasantness of the conversation in addition to percei…
Sosiaalialan asiakastietojärjestelmissä paljon parannettavaa: käyttäjäkokemukset 2019
2020
Tutkimus toimii pilottina vuonna…

Citizen science for scientific literacy and the attainment of sustainable development goals in normal education
2020
Curricular integration of the formal teaching of citizen science can bring to the classroom aspects of scientific literacy that encourage the involvement of citizens. In particular, these include non-epistemic aspects related to the sociology of science (which are often not transferred to the classroom). Furthermore, this practice raises awareness among students, and encourages them to become participants in the attainment of the United Nations&rsquo
Which has more influence on perception of pseudo-therapies: the media’s information, friends or acquaintances opinion, or educational background?
2019
This study analyses the discourses of Education and Journalism students in order to understand their perception of complementary and alternative therapies. Likewise, to know if educational background or friends or acquaintances opinion has a more considerable influence on their knowledge and use of these socially controversial techniques than the media. This study uses qualitative research methods based upon 12 discussion groups with 102 participants. Once transcriptions were completed, discourse analysis was conducted using linguistic corpus software (T-LAB. 9.1.). In the design of the research, these students were selected for their social involvement in their future careers, such as when…

Book Review: Taking ICT to Every Indian Village: Opportunities and Challenges
2006
Atanu Garai & B. Shadrach (2006). Taking ICT to every Indian village: Opportunities and challenges. New Delhi, India: One World South Asia; 133 pages. Information and communication technology (ICT) activities can easily be seen as a sort of technocracy, which is not surprising because the focus of attention is often dominated by issues such as the bandwidth, new devices, or the fierce competition between technological companies and their innovative products. In short, the discussion often is restricted to Habermasian technical interest of knowledge. At the end of the day, however, everything in ICT is about people and, more specifically, about the emancipatory application of knowledge for a…
