The effect of weight on labor market outcomes: An application of genetic instrumental variables
2019
This paper contributes to the literature on the labor market consequences of obesity by using a novel instrument: genetic risk score, which reflects the predisposition to higher body mass index (BMI) across many genetic loci. We estimate instrumental variable models of the effect of BMI on labor market outcomes using Finnish data that have many strengths, for example, BMI that is measured rather than self‐reported, and data on earnings and social income transfers that are from administrative tax records and are thus free of the problems associated with nonresponse, reporting error or top coding. The empirical results are sensitive to whether we use a narrower or broader genetic risk score, …
Trace elements in glucometabolic disorders: an update.
2010
International audience; Many trace elements, among which metals, are indispensable for proper functioning of a myriad of biochemical reactions, more particularly as enzyme cofactors. This is particularly true for the vast set of processes involved in regulation of glucose homeostasis, being it in glucose metabolism itself or in hormonal control, especially insulin. The role and importance of trace elements such as chromium, zinc, selenium, lithium and vanadium are much less evident and subjected to chronic debate. This review updates our actual knowledge concerning these five trace elements. A careful survey of the literature shows that while theoretical postulates from some key roles of th…
Influence of the channel design on the heat and mass exchange of induction channel furnace
2011
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present in‐depth numerical modelling of heat and mass exchange in industrial induction channel furnace (ICF).Design/methodology/approachThe turbulent heat and mass exchange in the melt is calculated using a three‐dimensional (3D) electromagnetic model and a 3D transient large eddy simulation method. The simulation model has been verified by flow velocity and temperature measurements, which were carried out using an industrial sized channel inductor operating with Wood's metal as a low temperature model melt.FindingsThe ICF is well‐established for melting, holding and casting in the metallurgical industry. But there are still open questions regarding th…
Numerical studies of the melting process in the induction furnace with cold crucible
2008
PurposeAims to present recent activities in numerical modeling of cold crucible melting process.Design/methodology/approach3D numerical analysis was used for electromagnetic problem and 3D large eddy simulation (LES) method was applied for fluid flow modeling.FindingsThe comparative modeling shows, that higher H/D ratio of the melt is more efficient when total power consumption is considered, but this advantage is held back by higher heat losses through the crucible walls. Also, calculations reveal that lower frequencies, which are energetically less effective, provide better mixing of the melt.Originality/value3D electromagnetic model, which allows to take into account non‐symmetrical dist…
Collaborative competition is a very useful tool fo…
Use of acousto-Optic Filters in imaging applications. A contribution to the SmartSpectra project
2009
This Thesis analyses the use of an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) for the realisation of spectral imaging systems. An AOTF is an electronically tunable spectral bandpass optical filter. It consists on a crystal that, excited with acoustic waves, diffracts and then separates a single wavelength of light from a broadband source. The wavelength of selected light is a function of the frequency of the signal applied to the crystal. We have implemented a spectral imaging instrument called Autonomous Tunable Filtering System (ATFS) that includes an AOTF in order to acquire multispectral images with a monochrome digital camera. Careful design and calibration permits its use in spectroscopic ap…
2020
How is a specific type of emotion-related work conducts formed today? What principles guide these conducts and what effects do they have on those who work? The study of Contact Center agents allows us to understand how a set of personal qualities such as patience and good treatment of others, certain desires and personal impulses or even intimate sensations such as anguish or individual expectations have become managerialized emotions that end up modifying the inner attitudes of these agents. Within this framework, we propose a theoretical approach that integrates the work of Weber, Foucault and Elias, which invites us to reflect on a socio-emotional manner of leading one?s life (Lebensfu?h…
Binding of Escherichia coli hemolysin and activation of the target cells is not receptor-dependent.
2005
Abstract Production of a single cysteine substitution mutant, S177C, allowed Escherichia coli hemolysin (HlyA) to be radioactively labeled with tritiated N-ethylmaleimide without affecting biological activity. It thus became possible to study the binding characteristics of HlyA as well as of toxin mutants in which one or both acylation sites were deleted. All toxins bound to erythrocytes and granulocytes in a nonsaturable manner. Only wild-type toxin and the lytic monoacylated mutant stimulated production of superoxide anions in granulocytes. An oxidative burst coincided with elevation of intracellular Ca2+, which was likely because of passive influx of Ca2+ through the toxin pores. Competi…
