Laser Ablation of Poly(lactic acid) Sheets for the Rapid Prototyping of Sustainable, Single-Use, Disposable Medical Microcomponents
2018
The employment of single-use, disposable medical equipment has increased the amount of medical waste produced and the advent of point-of-care diagnostics in lab-on-chip format is likely to add further volume. Current materials used for the manufacture of these devices are derived from petroleum sources and are, therefore, unsustainable. In addition, disposal of these plastics necessitates combustion to reduce infection risk, which has, depending on material composition, an undesirable environmental impact. To address these issues, we have developed a general approach for the rapid prototyping of single-use point-of-care cartridges prepared from poly(lactic acid), a sustainable material whic…
The actual management of colorectal liver metastases
2020
Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in the world and between 50% and 60% of patients will develop colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) during the disease. There have been great improvements in the management of CRLM during the last decades. The combination of modern chemotherapeutic and biological systemic treatments with aggressive surgical resection strategies is currently the base for the treatment of patients considered unresectable until few years ago. Furthermore, several new treatments for the local control of CRLM have been developed and are now part of the arsenal of multidisciplinary teams for the treatment of these complex patients. The aim of this review was to s…
Enrichment of Retinal Ganglion Cells in Rat Retinal Lysate by Excimer Laser Ablation of the Outer Retina
2013
PURPOSE. Retinal ganglion cells (RGC) are a relatively small cell population in the retina. This leads to an unfavorable signal-tonoise ratio when analyzing RGC proteins in whole retina lysate. We present a novel technique to obtain RGC-enriched rat retinal lysate by removing the outer retinal layers with an excimer laser before lysation. METHODS. Outer retinal layers were ablated with an excimer laser on flat mounted retinas from adult albino rats. 4 0 6Diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride hydrate (DAPI) nuclear staining was used to assess the ablation efficacy (n ! 6). Western blot for layer specific markers (rhodopsin, parvalbumin, b-III-tubulin) was performed to quantify changes in …
Sorafenib for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: From Randomized Controlled Trials to Clinical Practice.
2015
Hepatocellular carcinoma is a challenging malignancy of global importance. It is the sixth most common solid malignancy and the third leading cause of cancer-related death, worldwide. Curative treatments at early stages include liver transplantation, resection and percutaneous ablation, while transarterial chemoembolization can improve survival in patients with intermediate tumor stage. Patients with mild, related symptoms and/or macrovascular invasion or extrahepatic spread are classified under the advanced stage. The standard of care in this group is sorafenib, an inhibitor of Raf kinase and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, whose effectiveness has been proven by 2 recent rando…
Surface preparation by using laser cleaning in thermal spray
2008
International audience; Pulsed laser cleaning has emerged as a promising technology to challenge traditional surface preparation methods. This paper introduces the PROTAL(R) process, which combines an in situ pulsed laser cleaning with thermal spraying techniques. This laser surface preparation avoids some drawbacks of the traditional degreasing and sand-blasting stages prior to thermal spraying, which is especially meaningful for ductile and notch-sensitive materials. The laser induced phenomenon and the significant role of such laser irradiation in the coating deposition are presented. (C) 2008 Laser Institute of America.
Transcranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Focused Ultrasound with a 1.5 Tesla Scanner: A Prospective Intraindividual Comparison Study of Intraop…
2021
Background: High-quality intraoperative imaging is needed for optimal monitoring of patients undergoing transcranial MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) thalamotomy. In this paper, we compare the intraoperative imaging obtained with dedicated FUS-Head coil and standard body radiofrequency coil in tcMRgFUS thalamotomy using 1.5-T MR scanner. Methods: This prospective study included adult patients undergoing tcMRgFUS for treatment of essential tremor. Intraoperative T2-weighted FRFSE sequences were acquired after the last high-energy sonication using a dedicated two-channel FUS-Head (2ch-FUS) coil and body radiofrequency (body-RF) coil. Postoperative follow-ups were performed at 48 h usin…
Comparison of tritium measurement techniques for a laser cleaned JET tile
2014
Abstract Over the last 7–8 years, two quantitative analyzing methods—accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and full combustion (FC) followed by scintillation detection have been applied for determining the tritium activity concentrations in JET divertor tiles. These methods have two main differences – the range of detection and the spatial resolution – and are thus complementary. However, these differences can also complicate the comparison of the two techniques for typical JET divertor samples. Therefore a cross comparison exercise for tritium measurements was performed between the two methods using specially produced identical standard samples. The cross comparison measurements were perform…
Emissive titanium dioxide nanoparticles synthesized py pulsed laser ablation in liquid phase
2013
The remarkable applications of TiO2 nanomaterials, including, e.g. photocatalysis and dye-sensitized solar cells, have inspired in the last two decades an extensive amount of research aimed at understanding the properties of these materials. Photoluminescence is scarcely used to probe the electronic properties of TiO2, because neither bulk or nanosized TiO2 commonly display room-temperature emission. In particular, the fundamental luminescence due to the recombination of the self-trapped exciton in anatase TiO2 is typically observed only at low temperatures. We report the synthesis of luminescent titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NPs) by pulsed laser ablation of titanium in aqueous solution. …
Referenceless thermometry using radial basis function interpolation
2014
The Proton Resonance Frequency (PRF) shift provide a method for temperature change measurements during thermotherapy. Conventional PRF thermometry works subtracting one or multiple baseline images. The method leads to artifacts caused by tissue motion and frequency drift. Various works estimating the background phase from each acquired image phase are present in literature. These algorithms are called “referenceless” because they don’t require any subtraction of baseline images for calculating temperature increment. Conventional referenceless methods estimate baseline image by fitting the background phase outside the heated region through a polynomial approach. In this work a background pha…
