2019

[EN] Service-learning (SL) is a methodology that contributes to the formation of values and the citizenship of university students, who can acquire a relevant role in the construction of a more dignified, inclusive, cohesive and equitable citizenship. The objective of the work is to quantify how the SL methodology implemented in a subject improves the competences of the students in the same course of implementation and after one year of implementation. Four experimental groups were formed: a) group LS-course 2017-2018; b) group NO-LS-course 2017-2018; c) group LS-course 2018-2019; d) group NO-LScourse 2018-2019. Each one of the groups was evaluated during the academic year 2018-2019 in the …

2019

[EN] Our general objective consists in using gamification as a teaching tool in order to get a higher level of students’ involvement in the tutorials, as well as, increasing the motivation to learn Pathophysiology in the Pharmacy Degree. Not all the students groups are uniform, and also the teachers have nonconscious prejudices for each group. Hence, every student group has its own idiosyncrasy. We have the hypothesis that the game can give us really valuable information to let us develop suitable teaching techniques to enhance the motivation for each particular group. Games offers a more relaxed scenario compared to master class or exam, therefore we can ask questions as a team contest tha…

2021

[EN] Social media have become a valuable resource for the teaching community, enabling online teaching and learning environments to be created. These tools have gained prominence as a result of the pandemic caused by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, making it viable to continue teaching through these channels. On the other hand, social media are a fundamental element in the day-to- day work of sport managers, being a very useful tool for managing aspects as diverse as brand image, fan engagement and sponsorship. This work shares an educational innovation named "LinkedIn (r)evolution", carried out with a total of 118 students (72.4% men and 27.6% women) of sport management from two Spanis…

Ant crickets and their secrets: Myrmecophilus acervorum is not always parthenogenetic (Insecta: Orthoptera: Myrmecophilidae)

2021

Abstract Previously considered as a thelytokous parthenogenetic species, the widespread ant cricket Myrmecophilus acervorum actually turns out to have a mixed reproductive system: our recent surveys in the central part of its distribution area has revealed the presence of both sexes. Detailed morphological and morphometric descriptions of the previously unknown males are here provided. New data on species distribution in south-eastern Europe are presented, including the first records of M. balcanicus in Bulgaria and of M. nonveilleri in Bulgaria and Hungary. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses have revealed several haplotypes of M. acervorum in Europe, with six of them forming a parth…

From phylogenetics to phylogenomics: the evolutionary relationships of insect endosymbiotic gamma-Proteobacteria as a test case.

2007

The increasing availability of complete genome sequences and the development of new, faster methods for phylogenetic reconstruction allow the exploration of the set of evolutionary trees for each gene in the genome of any species. This has led to the development of new phylogenomic methods. Here, we have compared different phylogenetic and phylogenomic methods in the analysis of the monophyletic origin of insect endosymbionts from the gamma-Proteobacteria, a hotly debated issue with several recent, conflicting reports. We have obtained the phylogenetic tree for each of the 579 identified protein-coding genes in the genome of the primary endosymbiont of carpenter ants, Blochmannia floridanus…

Combining Hexanoic Acid Plant Priming with Bacillus thuringiensis Insecticidal Activity against Colorado Potato Beetle

2013

Interaction between insect herbivores and host plants can be modulated by endogenous and exogenous compounds present in the source of food and might be successfully exploited in Colorado potato beetle (CPB) pest management. Feeding tests with CPB larvae reared on three solanaceous plants (potato, eggplant and tomato) resulted in variable larval growth rates and differential susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa toxin as a function of the host plant. An inverse correlation with toxicity was observed in Cry3Aa proteolytic patterns generated by CPB midgut brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from Solanaceae-fed larvae, being the toxin most extensively proteolyzed on potato, followed…
