PNeuro: A scalable energy-efficient programmable hardware accelerator for neural networks

2018

Proceedings of a meeting held 19-23 March 2018, Dresden, Germany; International audience; Artificial intelligence and especially Machine Learning recently gained a lot of interest from the industry. Indeed, new generation of neural networks built with a large number of successive computing layers enables a large amount of new applications and services implemented from smart sensors to data centers. These Deep Neural Networks (DNN) can interpret signals to recognize objects or situations to drive decision processes. However, their integration into embedded systems remains challenging due to their high computing needs. This paper presents PNeuro, a scalable energy-efficient hardware accelerat…

Transient cortical circuits match spontaneous and sensory-driven activity during development.

2020

At the earliest developmental stages, spontaneous activity synchronizes local and large-scale cortical networks. These networks form the functional template for the establishment of global thalamocortical networks and cortical architecture. The earliest connections are established autonomously. However, activity from the sensory periphery reshapes these circuits as soon as afferents reach the cortex. The early-generated, largely transient neurons of the subplate play a key role in integrating spontaneous and sensory-driven activity. Early pathological conditions—such as hypoxia, inflammation, or exposure to pharmacological compounds—alter spontaneous activity patterns, which subsequently in…

On the cellular mechanisms underlying working memory capacity in humans

2016

The cellular processes underlying individual differences in the Working Memory Capacity (WMC) of humans are essentially unknown. Psychological experiments suggest that subjects with lower working memory capacity (LWMC), with respect to subjects with higher capacity (HWMC), take more time to recall items from a list because they search through a larger set of items and are much more susceptible to interference during retrieval. However, a more precise link between psychological experiments and cellular properties is lacking and very difficult to investigate experimentally. In this paper, we investigate the possible underlying mechanisms at the single neuron level by using a computational mod…

The Poetic Image in Search for Living Space In my article, I examine the concept of image, a concept which has been particularly problematic in the research of poetry. I will demonstrate that the previous definitions of the concept have been incoherent, too general and even contradictory. In contemporary literary studies, the concept of image has been used as a generali¬zation encompassing various figures of speech. At the same time, it has been understood as a “pure image”, a concrete and literal expression of sensory perception. In the first sense, the image is in the same category as, for example, the metaphor, the symbol, and the allegory, whereas in the second sense it is given a speci…

PALERMO NEL QUADERNO DI VIAGGIO IN SICILIA DI NICODEMUS TESSIN (1674)

2019

In 1674 the Swedish architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, during his short journey to Sicily, visited Palermo, where he stayed only for three days. Yet he had the opportunity to spend some of his time visiting the city and keeping a journal, a notebook characterized by concise writing, but where brief notes of whatever he found interesting or peculiar elements (such as monuments, marble statues and fountains, architectural furniture ecc.) and therefore the journal witnesses indeed what a young XVIIth century architect, destined to the future role of royal architect, could select and choose.Tessin's further observations are directed towards painting, along with extremely useful information…

Ein Auswerteprogramm zur quantitativen Untersuchung der Lungenventilation mittels dynamischer MRT von hochpolarisiertem 3He

2004

Purpose: 3 He-MRI is able to visualize the regional distribution of lung ventilation with a temporal and spatial resolution so far unmatched by any other technique. The aim of the study was the development of a new software tool for quantification of dynamic ventilation parameters in absolute physical units. Materials and Methods: During continuous breathing, a bolus of hyperpolarized 3 He (300 ml) was applied at inspiration and a series of 168 coronal projection images simultaneously acquired using a 2D FLASH-sequence. Postprocessing software was developed to analyze the 3 He distribution in the lung. After correction for lung motion, several ventilation parameters (rise time, delay time, …

The Regression Tsetlin Machine: A Tsetlin Machine for Continuous Output Problems

2019

The recently introduced Tsetlin Machine (TM) has provided competitive pattern classification accuracy in several benchmarks, composing patterns with easy-to-interpret conjunctive clauses in propositional logic. In this paper, we go beyond pattern classification by introducing a new type of TMs, namely, the Regression Tsetlin Machine (RTM). In all brevity, we modify the inner inference mechanism of the TM so that input patterns are transformed into a single continuous output, rather than to distinct categories. We achieve this by: (1) using the conjunctive clauses of the TM to capture arbitrarily complex patterns; (2) mapping these patterns to a continuous output through a novel voting and n…

A code to calculate (high order) Bessel functions based on the continued fractions method

1993

Abstract We have developed a fast code to calculate Bessel functions of integer and fractional order based on the continued fractions method. This algorithm is specially useful in the case of Bessel functions of high order because it does not require any recalculation using normalization relations.
