Optical Fibre NO2 Sensor Based on Lutetium Bisphthalocyanine in a Mesoporous Silica Matrix

2018

International audience; In this article, we describe a NO2 sensor consisting of a coating based on lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc2) in mesoporous silica. The sensor exploits the absorption spectrum change of this material which strongly and reversibly decreases in contact with NO2. NO2 is measured by following the amplitude change in the reflected spectrum of the coating deposited on the tip of a silica fibre. As diffusion of NO2 in LuPc2 is slow, the response time could be slow. To reduce it, the active molecules are dispersed in a mesoporous silica matrix deposited by a sol-gel process (Evaporation Induced Self Assembly) avoiding the formation of large crystals. Doing so, the response i…

All-Optical Tuning of WGMs in Microspheres Made of Er/Yb Codoped Optical Fiber

2014

All-optical, pump-assisted, thermal tuning of high-Q whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonances of microspheres is demonstrated. The microspheres were made of an Er/Yb codoped single-mode silica optical fiber. The pump light absorbed by the active ions heats the microsphere, which leads to the shift of the resonances. A tuning range in excess of 2 nm in the C-band is achieved. The presence of active ions is restricted to the core of the microsphere. The WGM fields, which are confined in a region close to the surface of the microsphere, do not overlap with the dopant. Thus, high-Q resonances (>10 7 ) are achieved, as in pure silica microspheres, even at optical wavelengths within the absorptio…

Cascadability and reshaping properties of a saturable absorber inserted inside a RZ transmission line for future 160-Gbit/s all-optical 2R-regenerato…

2007

International audience; In this prospective work, we analyze the behavior of a quantum-well microcavity saturable absorber component cascaded into a 100-km SMF RZ transmission line in order to annihilate the ghost-pulse phenomenon in the following simplified “...010101...” 160-Gbit/s 2-bit pattern at 1555 nm. Recirculating-loop experiments show a maximal ghost-pulse extinction up to 11.6 dB as well as an intensity extinction ratio enhancement higher than 6 dB over at least 800 km of propagation.

Ultraviolet-induced paramagnetic centers and absorption changes in singlemode Ge-doped optical fibers

2009

We investigated the laser-energy-density dependence of absorption changes and paramagnetic centers induced by a cw Ar+ laser operating at 5.1 eV, in both unloaded and H-2-loaded single mode Ge-doped optical fibers. The induced absorption is measured in the blue and near ultraviolet spectral range by using the 3.1 eV photoluminescence, ascribed to Ge lone pair center (GLPC), as an in situ probe source. We find that the Ge (1) center (GeO4-) is induced upon UV exposure by electron trapping on GeO4 precursors, where the free electrons are most likely produced by ionization of GLPC. Ge (1) is responsible of optical transmission loss of the fiber in the investigated range. Hydrogen loading stron…

Silicon-microring into a fiber laser cavity for high-repetition-rate pulse train generation

2017

International audience; In 1997, Yoshida et al. inserted a Fabry-Perot filter in a modulation instability fiber laser cavity [1], the free spectral range (FSR) of the Fabry-Perot fixed the RF to 115 GHz; however the pulsed laser was poorly stable. Since then, lasers of increasing performance have been demonstrated using variants of this method. In 2012, Peccianti et al., demonstrated the first fiber laser harmonically mode-locked by integrated high-finesse microresonator [2]. The doped silica, on-chip microresonator provided both high spectral selectivity and nonlinearity, thus promoting the dynamics pulsed at 200 GHz. By using a silicon microring resonator (SMRR), this approach lead to the…

Impact of optical and structural aging in As_2S_3 microstructured optical fibers on mid-infrared supercontinuum generation

2014

We analyze optical and structural aging in As2S3 microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) that may have an impact on mid-infrared supercontinuum generation. A strong alteration of optical transparency at the fundamental OH absorption peak is measured for high-purity As2S3 MOF stored in atmospheric conditions. The surface evolution and inherent deviation of corresponding chemical composition confirm that the optical and chemical properties of MOFs degrade upon exposure to ambient conditions because of counteractive surface process. This phenomenon substantially reduces the optical quality of the MOFs and therefore restrains the spectral expansion of generated supercontinuum. This aging process …

Evolution of Photo-induced defects in Ge-doped fiber/preform: influence of the drawing

2011

International audience; We have studied the generation mechanisms of two different radiation-induced point defects, the Ge(1) and Ge(2) centers, in a germanosilicate fiber and in its original preform. The samples have been investigated before and after X-ray irradiation using the confocal microscopy luminescence and the electron paramagnetic resonance techniques. Our experimental results show the higher radiation sensitivity of the fiber as compared to the perform and suggest a relation between Ge(1) and Ge(2) generation. To explain our data we have used different models, finding that the destruction probability of the Ge(1) and Ge(2) defects is larger in fiber than in preform, whereas the …

Ultraviolet-visible light-induced solarisation in silica-based optical fibres for indoor solar applications

2021

Abstract The transmission performances of pure- and doped-silica (a-SiO2) optical fibres are compared during the exposure to a high-power broadband light source approximating the solar spectrum. From the Gaussian decomposition of the attenuation spectra, we found that Al- and P-doped fibres show a fast solarisation effect which leads to transmission degradation in the ultraviolet-visible range. Similarly, Ge-doped fibres undergo photoinduced colour-centre formation which, however, does not prevent visible-light propagation. One of the two tested pure-silica fibres results completely unaffected by light exposure whereas the other shows an absorption band probably due to the presence of chlor…

Infrared monitoring of underground CO2 storage using chalcogenide glass fibers

2009

International audience; An optical-fiber-based system suitable for monitoring the presence of carbon dioxide, so-called "greenhouse gas", is investigated. Since each pollutant gas shows a characteristic optical absorption spectrum in the mid-infrared (mid-IR), it is possible to detect selectively and quantitatively the presence of gases in a given environment by analysing mid-IR spectra. The main infrared signature of carbon dioxide gas is a double absorption peak located at 4.2 μm. Chalcogenide optical fibers, which can transmit light in the 1-6 μm range, are well-adapted for CO2 analysis. In this wavelength range, they show attenuation losses that compare favourably with other types of fi…

Excited-state absorption in erbium-doped silica fiber with simultaneous excitation at 977 and 1531 nm

2009

We report a study of the excited-state absorption (ESA) in erbium-doped silica fiber (EDF) pumped at 977 nm, when the fiber is simultaneously excited by signal radiation at 1531 nm. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that ESA efficiency at 977 nm gets strongly enhanced only in the presence of signal power. Experimentally, this conclusion is supported through the detection of upconversion emission, a “fingerprint” of the ESA process, and through the measurements of the EDF nonlinear transmission coefficient for the pump wavelength, which is sensitive to the ESA value. It is shown that the experimental data are precisely modeled with an advanced five-level Er3+ model developed fo…
