Bradykinin Contracts Rat Urinary Bladder Largely Independently of Phospholipase C

2014

Several receptor systems in the bladder causing detrusor smooth muscle contraction stimulate phospholipase C (PLC). PLC inhibition abolishes bladder contraction via P2Y6 but not that via M3 muscarinic receptors, indicating a receptor-dependent role of PLC. Therefore, we explored the role of PLC in rat bladder contraction by bradykinin. The PLC inhibitor U 73,122 [1-(6-[([17β]-3-methoxyestra-1,3,5[10]-trien-17-yl)-amino]hexyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione] did not affect the bradykinin response to a significantly greater degree than its inactive analog U 73,343 [10 μM each; 1-(6-[-([17β]-3-methoxyestra-1,3,5[10]-trien-17-yl)-amino]hexyl)-2,5-pyrrolidinedione], whereas the phospholipase D inhibitor b…

Variability in protein binding of teicoplanin and achievement of therapeutic drug monitoring targets in critically ill patients: Lessons from the DAL…

2014

The aims of this study were to describe the variability in protein binding of teicoplanin in critically ill patients as well as the number of patients achieving therapeutic target concentrations. This report is part of the multinational pharmacokinetic DALI Study. Patients were sampled on a single day, with blood samples taken both at the midpoint and the end of the dosing interval. Total and unbound teicoplanin concentrations were assayed using validated chromatographic methods. The lower therapeutic range of teicoplanin was defined as total trough concentrations from 10 to 20 mg/L and the higher range as 10-30 mg/L. Thirteen critically ill patients were available for analysis. The followi…

The essay, through documents never before published, speaks of the events related to the construction of the main altar of the church of the Holy Souls in Valletta (Malta). It is a work of the marble workers Antonino and Francesco Amato and aid from Messina made in the years 1743-1747.

Matka Jezusa w nauczaniu i tradycji apostolskiej wzorem współczesnej katechezy maryjnej

2018

Trzeba też sięgać do Ojców Kościoła i wielkich teologów maryjnych, którzy byli piewcami Matki Słowa. Nie wolno również zapomnieć o rozwoju tradycji maryjnej w kulturze i sz…

Theoretical Study on the Diffusion Mechanism of Cd in the Cu-Poor Phase of CuInSe2 Solar Cell Material

2013

We have employed first-principles static and molecular dynamics (MD) calculations with semilocal and screened-exchange hybrid density functionals to study the diffusion of Cd in bulk CuIn5Se8, a copper-poor ordered vacancy compound of CuInSe2. The diffusion mechanism and the underlying kinetics/energetics were investigated by combining ab initio metadynamics simulations and nudged elastic band (NEB) calculations. We found that the migration of Cd occurs via a kick-out of Cu atoms, assisted by the pristine vacancies that are constitutive of this compound, and follows a double-hump energy profile. The rate-limiting step has a barrier of about 1 eV at 0 K but reduces to 0.3 eV at 850 K, pointi…

Analysis of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket module under normal operation steady state conditi…

2015

Within the framework of DEMO R&D activities, a research cooperation has been launched between ENEA, the University of Palermo and CEA to investigate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the outboard equatorial module of the DEMO1 Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) blanket under normal operation steady state scenario. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and adopting a qualified commercial FEM code. In particular, two different 3D FEM models (Model 1 and Model 2), reproducing respectively the central and the lateral poloidal-radial slices of the WCLL blanket module, have been set up. A particular attent…

Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges: An electrodiffusion model for ionic transport

2003

Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges exhibit ionic equilibrium and transport properties that resemble those displayed by biological ion channels. We present an electrodiffusion model based on the Nernst-Planck flux equations, which allows for a qualitative description of the steady state ionic transport through a nanopore when the membrane fixed charges and all mobile carriers (including the water ions) are properly taken into account. In particular, we study the current-voltage curve, the electrical conductance, the reversal potential (a measure of the nanopore ionic selectivity), as well as the flux inhibition by protons and divalent cations in the nanopore. The model clearly shows how …

Equilibrium Dynamics and Shear Rheology of Semiflexible Polymers in Solution

2017

We study the structure and dynamics of semidilute solutions of semiflexible polymers at rest and under shear using hybrid molecular dynamics simulations that take hydrodynamic interactions into account. We show that the polymer center-of-mass diffusion coefficient significantly decreases with increasing chain stiffness at fixed monomer density. The zero-shear viscosity shows a corresponding increase due to the intermolecular interactions of stiffer chains. We apply steady shear flow to the polymer solutions and show that at high shear rates the flow properties become almost independent of polymer stiffness. We characterize the polymer conformations under shear and find that in this regime p…

Thermo-mechanical analyses and ways of optimization of the helium cooled DEMO First Wall under RCC-MRx rules

2017

Abstract The EUROfusion Consortium develops a design of a fusion power demonstrator plant (DEMO) in the framework of the European “Horizon 2020” innovation and research program. One of the key components in the fusion reactor is the Breeding Blanket (BB) surrounding the plasma, ensuring tritium self-sufficiency, heat removal for conversion into electricity, and neutron shielding. Among the 4 candidates for the DEMO BB, 2 of them use helium as coolant (HCPB, HCLL), and another one (DCLL) uses helium to cool down the First Wall (FW) only. Due to uncertainties regarding the plasma Heat Flux (HF) load the DEMO BB integrated FW will have to cope with, a set of sensitive thermal and stress analys…
