Epinephrine and Norepinephrine Pattern in Elderly Patients with Borderline and Established Hypertension
1989
To evaluate the activity of sympathetic system and of plasm renin in elderly patients with borderline (BH) and established essential hypertension (EH), 31 BH mean age 38 years and 30 EH, mean age 39 years; 15 BH, mean age 66 years, and 15 EH, mean age 68 years, were studied at rest and after dynamic exercise. At the same time blood pressure and heart rate were automatically recorded, while blood samples were collected for PRA and plasma epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) assays. Plasma E levels showed no significant differences between the groups examined at rest. Nevertheless, young BH had higher plasma E levels than young EH after stress and elderly BH showed plasma E levels higher t…
25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in healthy premenopausal women: Association with bone turnover markers and bone mineral density
2008
Abstract Background Vitamin D deficiency is very common in elderly people while there are very few reports on its incidence, determinants and metabolic consequences in young subjects. Results In 608 young healthy premenopausal women participating in the BONTURNO study, levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] below 20 ng/ml were found in almost a third of the women. Its levels were inversely ( P 2 ) and directly with sunlight exposure during the summer time, and latitude: i.e. the higher the latitude over Italy, the higher the 25(OH)D level. In women on contraceptive pill the mean 25(OH)D level was significantly increased even when the data were adjusted for age, BMI and sun exposure. 25(OH)…
Age at menopause predicts age at onset of Parkinson's disease.
2006
We investigated the association between age at onset of Parkinson's disease (PD) and fertile life characteristics in 145 women. Linear regression analyses showed a significant correlation between age at PD onset and age at menopause (P = 0.003), between age at PD onset and fertile life duration (P = 0.008), and a nonsignificant correlation between PD onset and cumulative duration of pregnancies (P = 0.23). These results support the possible role of estrogens in PD.
Muscle cross-sectional area, force production and relaxation characteristics in women at different ages
1991
Thirty women, divided among three different age groups, i.e. 30 years (range 26–35;n = 10), 50 years (range 46–55;n = 10) and 70 years (range 66–75;n = 10) volunteered as subjects for examination of the characteristics of the muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), maximal voluntary isometric force, isometric force-time and relaxation-time of their leg extensor muscles. The CSA of the quadriceps femoris muscle in the youngest age group was slightly larger (NS) than in the middle-aged group and much larger (P<0.41) than in the oldest age group whose CSA was markedly smaller (P<0.01) than the middle-aged group. Maximal force in the youngest group was slightly greater (NS) than in the middle-aged g…
Accuracy and accommodation capability of a handheld autorefractor
2000
Purpose: To determine the accuracy of measurement by the Nikon Retinomax handheld autorefractor and its ability to relax accommodation. Setting: Pediatric Section, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Mainz, Germany. Methods: To perform a series of comparative measurements, autorefractor readings were obtained on healthy young adults (students) and on children aged 2 to 12 years. The autorefractor readings were compared with subjective refractions of the young adults and with cycloplegic retinoscopy of the children. Results: In adults, the accuracy of the handheld autorefractor measurements was comparable to that of conventional tabletop autorefractors. In children, the autorefractor …
Preoperative simulation of postoperative iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens position and simulation of aging using high-resolution Scheimpflug imag…
2006
To increase postoperative safety after implantation of iris-fixated phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs), optimal preoperative evaluation and patient selection is mandatory. We present a new software tool in a high-resolution Scheimpflug imaging device that precisely simulates the postoperative position of an iris-fixated pIOL and also simulates the effect of aging on the pIOL's position.
SHIP2: A “NEW” Insulin Pathway Target for Aging Research
2014
Strong evidence suggests that systemic inflammation and central adiposity contribute to and perpetuate metabolic syndrome. All of these alterations predispose individuals to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, as well as Alzheimer's disease (AD), all characterized by chronic inflammatory status. On the other hand, extensive abnormalities in insulin and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and IGF-II signaling mechanisms in brains with AD have been demonstrated, suggesting that AD could be a third form of diabetes. The Src homology domain-containing inositol 5-phosphatase 2 (SHIP2) has an important role in the insulin pathway because its over-expression causes impairment…
Does the level of serum antimüllerian hormone predict ovulatory function in women with polycystic ovary syndrome with aging?
2012
Abstract OBJECTIVE: To determine possible prediction of regular menses with aging in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN: Cohort. SETTING: Academic practice. PATIENT(S): A total of 54 anovulatory women with PCOS and 28 age- and weight-matched control subjects. INTERVENTION(S): Blood and ovarian ultrasound at baseline and after 5 years. MAJOR OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Serum antimüllerian hormone (AMH), gonadotropins, androgens, insulin sensitivity, and ovarian ultrasound. RESULT(S): After 5 years, there was a significant decrease in AMH in women with PCOS and control subjects (10 of 54 anovulatory women became ovulatory after 5 years). There was a significant negative c…
Wall motion characteristic of the right pulmonary artery in the suprasternal echocardiogram
1980
This study describes the motion pattern of the right pulmonary artery (RPA) as it can be assessed from the suprasternal echocardiogram. The motion characteristic of the RPA is dependent on hemodynamic factors within the lumen of the RPA and those within the left atrium and the aortic arch. During atrial contraction the superior wall of the left atrium separates from the inferior wall of the RPA (IWRPA) and produces an "a" dip in the wall motion of the IWRPA. During isovolumic contraction the RPA is shifted upward (IC point). The incisura in the pulmonary artery pressure curve reflecting pulmonic valve closure can be seen by a sudden decrease in the diameter of the RPA (PC point). In conditi…
The utility of 3D medical imaging techniques for obtaining a reliable differential diagnosis of metastatic cancer in an Iron Age skull.
2018
Abstract In this report we present a case of neoplastic disease affecting an Iron Age skull that provides some of the earliest evidence of metastatic cancer (MC) in Western Europe. The cranium comes from the indigenous site of Baucina (Palermo, Sicily) and was recovered in a multiple burial context dated to the 6th–5th centuries BCE. The skull was attributed to an adult female and was characterized by numerous perforating lytic lesions. CT and 3D imaging analyses were crucial for obtaining a diagnosis of MC. Based on the morphology of the lytic lesions and the biological profile of our specimen, we can tentatively suggest breast carcinoma as the primary origin of the clinical manifestations…
