Religious and spiritual motifs in the art of the patients of Nikkilä Hospital

2021

This article focuses on religiousness and spirituality in the art works of psychiatric patients of Nikkilä Hospital, Finland. The pictures analysed here belong to a collection held at the Helsinki City Museum and they were made during the twentieth century. The theoretical frame of the study is a cultural study of mental health. The collection is approached as presenting a specific kind of imagery which has connections not only to the personal history and diagnoses of the patients; their cultural context and hospital environment is also taken into account. The religiousness and spirituality of the Nikkilä collection are also compared with outsider art and examples of art history internation…

Bright Retinal Lesions Detection using Color Fundus Images Containing Reflective Features

2009

Recently, the research community has developed many techniques to detect and diagnose diabetic retinopathy with retinal fundus images. This is a necessary step for the implementation of a large scale screening effort in rural areas where ophthalmologists are not available. In the United States of America, the incidence of diabetes is increasing among the young population. Retina fundus images of patients younger than 20 years old present a high amount of reflectance due to the Nerve Fibre Layer (NFL). Generally, the younger the patient the more the reflectance is visible. We are not aware of algorithms able to explicitly deal with this type of artifact.

LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints and its applications.

2014

How to select and weigh features has always been a difficult problem in many image processing and pattern recognition applications. A data-dependent distance measure can address this problem to a certain extent, and therefore an accurate and efficient metric learning becomes necessary. In this paper, we propose a LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints (LDMLT) approach, which can learn Mahalanobis distance metric accurately and efficiently. First of all, we demonstrate the good properties of triplet constraints and apply it in LogDet divergence-based metric learning model. Then, to deal with high-dimensional data, we apply a compressed representation method to learn…

Tiešsaistes azartspēles un tās analīze Latvijā

2020

2002

An indirect consequence of the economic globalisation is the questioning of the States as economic actors. In the context of developing countries, structural adjustment policies' constraint sometimes brutally destructured the educational systems. Reversibly, the social demand for education grew as the access to instruction was perceived as the most effective individualised strategy to escape underdevelopment. The international community quickly understood that such a degraded situation could only compromise the objective of education for all. The World Bank which was conscious of such problem as well as the economic inefficiency of many national educational systems decided to divert its act…

Predicting mobile apps spread: An epidemiological random network modeling approach

2017

[EN] The mobile applications business is a really big market, growing constantly. In app marketing, a key issue is to predict future app installations. The influence of the peers seems to be very relevant when downloading apps. Therefore, the study of the evolution of mobile apps spread may be approached using a proper network model that considers the influence of peers. Influence of peers and other social contagions have been successfully described using models of epidemiological type. Hence, in this paper we propose an epidemiological random network model with realistic parameters to predict the evolution of downloads of apps. With this model, we are able to predict the behavior of an app…

Radiomics and Prostate MRI: Current Role and Future Applications

2021

Multiparametric prostate magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is widely used as a triage test for men at a risk of prostate cancer. However, the traditional role of mpMRI was confined to prostate cancer staging. Radiomics is the quantitative extraction and analysis of minable data from medical images; it is emerging as a promising tool to detect and categorize prostate lesions. In this paper we review the role of radiomics applied to prostate mpMRI in detection and localization of prostate cancer, prediction of Gleason score and PI-RADS classification, prediction of extracapsular extension and of biochemical recurrence. We also provide a future perspective of artificial intelligence (machine …

Spin qubits with electrically gated polyoxometalate molecules

2007

Spin qubits offer one of the most promising routes to the implementation of quantum computers. Very recent results in semiconductor quantum dots show that electrically-controlled gating schemes are particularly well-suited for the realization of a universal set of quantum logical gates. Scalability to a larger number of qubits, however, remains an issue for such semiconductor quantum dots. In contrast, a chemical bottom-up approach allows one to produce identical units in which localized spins represent the qubits. Molecular magnetism has produced a wide range of systems with tailored properties, but molecules permitting electrical gating have been lacking. Here we propose to use the polyox…
