Whole-lake experiments reveal the fate of terrestrial particulate organic carbon in benthic food webs of shallow lakes

Lake ecosystems are strongly linked to their terrestrial surroundings by material and energy fluxes across ecosystem boundaries. However, the contribution of terrestrial particulate organic carbon (tPOC) from annual leaf fall to lake food webs has not yet been adequately traced and quantified. In this study, we conducted whole-lake experiments to trace artificially added tPOC through the food webs of two shallow lakes of similar eutrophic status, but featuring alternative stable regimes (macrophyte rich vs. phytoplankton dominated). Bakalaura darbā „Latvijas kultūras sakari ar Franciju no 1918. – 1934. gadam” pētīta Latvijas un Francijas sadarbība dažādās kultūras jomās demokrātiskās Latvijas laikā no 1918. g. 18. novembra līdz 1934. g. 15. maijam. Skatīti abu valstu sakari izglītībā, mākslā, u.c. Pievērsta uzmanība arī politiskajām norisēm, un to ietekmei kultūras sakaru veidošanā. Darba mērķis ir izpētīt, kādi ir Latvijas kultūras sakari ar Franciju no 1918. -1934. gadam, kā tie izpaužas, un kāda ir korelācija starp abu valstu politiskajām attiecībām un sakariem kultūras jomā. On the error sequences of M-ary FSK modulation schemes over Nakagami-m fading channels

In this paper, we have studied some important statistical properties of error sequences of M-ary orthogonal frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation schemes over Nakagami-m fading channels. We have derived the joint probability density function (PDF) of error sequences of arbitrary length. From the joint PDF, we have found an analytical solution for the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the error sequences. The correctness of the analytical expression for the ACF of error sequences has been confirmed by simulations, where the simulation results are obtained by using the sum-of-sinusoids principle. Hauki ja kuha esiintyvät Suomessa usein samoissa vesistöissä, mutta niiden vuorovaikutuksesta tiedetään vain vähän. Mikäli lajit kilpailevat samoista resursseista, runsaat kuhaistutukset tai kuhan luonnollinen yleistyminen voivat vaikuttaa negatiivisesti hauen menestykseen. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli selvittää hauen ja kuhan kasvua ja ravinnonkäyttöä Suotajärvessä. Kasvua tarkasteltiin myös suhteessa kasvukausien lämpötilaan. Ravinnonkäytössä keskityttiin hauen ja kuhan ravinnon päällekkäisyyteen ja siitä mahdollisesti seuraavaan ravintokilpailuun. Fusion of biological membranes

The process of membrane fusion has been examined by Monte Carlo simulation, and is found to be very different than the conventional picture. The differences in mechanism lead to several predictions, in particular that fusion is accompanied by transient leakage. This prediction has recently been verified. Self-consistent field theory is applied to examine the free energy barriers in the different scenarios.

Habitat preferences of edible dormouse, Glis glis italicus: implications for the management of arboreal mammals in Mediterranean forests

Research on arboreal mammals living in Mediterranean forests is poor. Molecular research assessed the existence of an evolutionary significant unit in the edible dormouse populations living in south Italy, Sicily and Sardinia, and we decided to investigate the environmental factors capable of explaining its occurrence and abundance in Sicily, for a better management of these populations.
