Biodiversity and oenological attitude of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains isolated in the Montalcino district: biodiversity of S. cerevisiae strains …
2020
ABSTRACT The biodiversity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied in the Montalcino area (Italy). Two wineries were involved in the study, which compared the genotypic and oenological characteristics of the S. cerevisiae strains isolated in spontaneous fermentations. After isolation yeasts were identified by 26S rRNA gene sequence analysis, and S. cerevisiae strains were characterized through interdelta sequence analysis (ISA). Oenological tests were performed in synthetic grape must by varying the magnitude of the main wine-imiting factors. The evolution of alcoholic fermentation was monitored by measuring sugar consumption and flow cytometry. The results revealed the prevalence of S. cere…
The Influence of Alcohol Advertising in Underage versus Overage Alcohol Consumption: Affective Responses and Advertising Effectiveness
2011
It is widely accepted that a framework is necessary to regulate advertising activities. Advertising has a responsibility within our economic system, to provide information on new and existing products and services. Economic health of both buyers and competitors is affected if the advertising system is injected with false or misleading claims. Thus, Government and self-regulation associations should create a set of rules which define and control the behaviour of the advertising companies. Taking into account the power attributed to advertising for influencing consumer behaviour, some of those mentioned rules are established to protect the audience.
College students’ attitudes towards prohealth behavior and alcohol consumption during pregnancy planning and pregnancy
2021
Background: Alcohol is one of the most commonly used psychoactive substances among students. Aim of the study: This study aimed to examine the level of pro-health behaviors among college students, and their opinions on alcohol consumption during pregnancy planning and pregnancy. Material and methods: This study was conducted in 2018 among 228 adult students in Opole secondary schools. Diagnostic surveys were used, which included the Health Behavior Inventory (HBI) and a questionnaire developed by the authors. Results: Forty-six percent (n = 105) of the 228 students presented with very low levels of pro-health behaviors and 57.46% (n = 131) of students endorsed alcohol intoxication or abuse …
Oppenauer Oxidation of Secondary Alcohols with 1,1,1-Trifluoroacetone as Hydride Acceptor
2007
1,1,1-Trifluoroacetone (2a) reacts as a hydride-acceptor in the Oppenauer oxidation of secondary alcohols (1) in the presence of diethylethoxyaluminum. The oxidant allows for selective oxidation of secondary alcohols in the presence of primary alcohols.
Solvent free oxidation of primary alcohols and diols using thymine iron(III) catalyst.
2010
In this study, we developed an efficient and selective iron-based catalyst system for the synthesis of ketones from secondary alcohols and carboxylic acids from primary alcohol. In situ generated iron catalyst of thymine-1-acetate (THA) and FeCl(3) under solvent-free condition exhibits high activity. As an example, 1-octanol and 2-octanol were oxidized to 1-octanoic acid and 2-octanone with 89% and 98% yields respectively.
The relationship between bipolar disorder and alcoholism: a controlled family study.
1995
SYNOPSISBipolar disorder and alcoholism are familial disorders. The familial–genetic relationship between both is controversial and has received insufficient study. This study explores whether bipolar disorder and alcoholism share familial risk factors, and whether the co-occurrence of lifetime diagnosis of bipolar disorder and alcoholism is familial. We report on first-degree relatives of 146 consecutively admitted patients with either bipolar disorder or/and alcoholism; relatives of the patients (in total 728 relatives directly interviewed) were compared with first-degree relatives of 109 general population probands (320 relatives directly interviewed). Overlap between the familial compon…
Lifetime total and beverage specific - alcohol intake and prostate cancer risk: a case-control study
2004
Abstract Background We investigated lifetime alcohol consumption and prostate cancer risk in a case-control study conducted in Buffalo, NY (1998–2001). Methods The study included 88 men, aged 45 to 85 years with incident, histologically-confirmed prostate cancer and 272 controls. We conducted extensive in-person interviews regarding lifetime alcohol consumption and other epidemiologic data. Results Prostate cancer risk was not associated with lifetime intake of total and beverage specific ethanol. In addition we found no association with number of drinks per day (average drinks per day over the lifetime) or drinks per drinking day (average drinks per day on drinking days only over the lifet…
Valence Topological Charge-Transfer Indices for Dipole Moments
2003
Valence topological charge-transfer (CT) indices are applied to the calculation of dipole moments. The dipole moments calculated by algebraic and vector semisums of the CT indices are defined. The combination of the CT indices allows the estimation of the dipole moments. The model is generalized for molecules with heteroatoms. The ability of the indices for the description of the molecular charge distribution is established by comparing them with the dipole moment of the valence-isoelectronic series of benzene and styrene. Two CT indices, μ v e c (vector semisum of vertex-pair dipole moments) and μ V v e c (valence μ v e c ) are proposed. μ v e c and μ V v e c are important for the predicti…
According to the CPLL proteome sheriffs, not all aperitifs are created equal!
2014
Combinatorial peptide ligand libraries (CPLLs) have been adopted for investigating the proteome of a popular aperitif in Northern Italy, called "Amaro Branzi", stated to be an infusion of a secret herbal mixture, of which some ingredients are declared on the label, namely Angelica officinalis, Gentiana lutea and orange peel, sweetened by a final addition of honey. In order to assess the genuineness of this commercial liqueur, we have prepared extracts of the three vegetable ingredients, assessed their proteomes, and compared them to the one found in the aperitif. The amaro's proteome was identified via prior capture with CPLLs at two different pH values (2.2 and 4.8). Via mass spectrometry …
