Sub-critical long-term operation of industrial scale hollow-fibre membranes in a submerged anaerobic MBR (HF-SAnMBR) system

2012

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term performance of hollow-fibre (HF) membranes used to treat urban wastewater in a submerged anaerobic MBR when operating sub-critically. To this end, a demonstration plant with two industrial scale HF ultrafiltration membrane modules was operated under different conditions. The main factor affecting membrane performance was the concentration of mixed liquor total solids (MLTS). The reversible fouling rate remained low even when MLTS levels (about 25 g L−1) in the membrane tank were high. No chemical cleaning was conducted whilst operating the plant for more than one year because no irreversible fouling problems were detected. The almost compl…

Filtration process cost in submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for urban wastewater treatment

2015

[EN] The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the main factors affecting the cost of the filtration process in submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for urban wastewater (UWW) treatment. Experimental data for CAPEX/OPEX calculations was obtained in an AnMBR system featuring industrial-scale hollow-fiber (HF) membranes. Results showed that operating at J(20) slightly higher than the critical flux results in minimum CAPEX/OPEX. The minimum filtration process cost ranged from Euro0.03 to Euro0.12 per m(3), mainly depending on SGD(m) (from 0.05 to 0.3 m(3)m(-2)h(-1)) and MLSS (from 5 to 25 gL-1). The optimal SGD(m) resulted in approx. 0.1 m(3)m(-2)h(-1).

TLR4 expression in ex-Lichenoid lesions—oral squamous cell carcinomas and its surrounding epithelium: the role of tumor inflammatory microenvironment

2022

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) regulate innate and adaptive immune responses. Moreover, TLRs can induce a pro-survival and pro-proliferation response in tumor cells. This study aims to investigate the expression of TLR4 in the epithelium surrounding oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) in relation to its inflammatory microenvironment. This study included 150 human samples: 30 normal oral control (NOC), 38 non-lichenoid epithelium surrounding OSCC (NLE-OSCC), 28 lichenoid epithelium surrounding OSCC (LE-OSCC), 30 OSCC ex-non oral lichenoid lesion (OSCC Ex-NOLL), and 24 OSCC ex-oral lichenoid lesion (OSCC Ex-OLL). TLR4 expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry and the percentage of posi…

El aprendizaje-servicio en la práctica docente de la Geografía: propuestas para la gestión turística del Parque Natural Chera-Sot de Chera (Valencia)

2021

[EN] Learning - Service (L-S) is an innovative methodology that stands out for its great didactic and applied outcomes. Its implementation in Geography, of multidisciplinary nature, promotes a participatory approach to the resolution and reflection of problems, incorporating professional views, beyond the classroom. In this work, we present an example of L-S around a management and planning problem related to tourists flows in a protected natural area (Valencia region), within the Degree of Geography and Environment of the University of Valencia. In particular, we attempt to solve congestion of visitors in the municipality of Sot de Chera, located in the Chera - Sot de Chera Natural Park, a…

Il rischio Ambientale in Sicilia e l'emergenza sanitaria

2014

Intangibles - enhancing access to cities cultural heritage through interpretation

2013

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to utilise commodification for the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage in cities by developing interpretative strategies, specifically enabling access to intangible cultural heritage through its tangible parts.Design/methodology/approachIn total, three case studies were conducted in the cities of Amsterdam, Genoa and Leipzig, through a workshop cycle with destination and local tourism stakeholders and citizen representatives, to develop interpretative strategies for the cities.FindingsThe paper identifies tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the three cities, and integrates them into stories and outlines the development of an interpret…
