Effects of binge drinking and the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin on spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in mice.
2021
Abstract In previous research, we found that chronic-intermittent ethanol administration (CIEA), a model of binge drinking, impaired emotional memory in mice, and this impairment was counteracted by the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of CIEA on spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in adolescent mice of both sexes. Animals were randomly assigned to one of four groups for each sex: SS (saline + saline), SA (saline + alcohol), SI (saline + indomethacin), and AI (alcohol + indomethacin). They were injected with saline, ethanol (3 g/kg) or indomethacin (10 mg/kg) for the first three days of each week, throughout three weeks. 96 h after tre…
Noninvasive respiratory muscle aids during PEG placement in ALS patients with severe ventilatory impairment.
2010
Abstract Although no clear recommendations are given about when percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) should be placed in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, some experts underline the risk of respiratory complications when patients had severe ventilatory muscle impairment (SVMI). Aim To evaluate the efficacy of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and mechanically assisted cough (MAC) to avoid respiratory complications related to PEG placement in ALS patients with SVMI. Material and methods Prospective study including ALS patients who had chosen to have PEG placement timed by swallowing dysfunction with the aid of NIV and MAC if needed. PEG was carried out under volume-cycled NIV th…
Clinical features and lifestyle of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Campania: brief overview of an Italian database
2012
Background. Physical activity and occupational exposures appeared to play a relevant role in pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease of unknown origin. Materials and methods. We aimed to make an overview of the clinical characteristics and life - style (occupation and sport) of a population of 395 patients with ALS from campania, in southern Italy. Results. ALS onset resulted anticipated of about 11 years in industry workers, whilst the more frequent site of onset among farmers was upper limbs. compared to non-athletes, athletes, particu- larly soccer players, showed a 7 years anticipation of ALS onset, with higher mortality after 5 years. Discussion…
Viral Infections in Neonates with Suspected Late-Onset Bacterial Sepsis—A Prospective Cohort Study
2016
Objective The aim of our study was to evaluate the occurrence of viral infections in infants with suspected late-onset bacterial sepsis in a neonatal intensive care unit. Methods In a prospective study, infants with suspected late-onset bacterial sepsis underwent viral testing alongside routine blood culture sampling. Using a multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, nasopharyngeal aspirates were analyzed for adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza virus A and B, H1N1 virus, parainfluenza virus 1 to 4, metapneumovirus, coronavirus, and picornavirus. Stools were examined for adenovirus, rotavirus, norovirus, and enterovirus.…
A lycopene β-cyclase/lycopene ε-cyclase/light-harvesting complex-fusion protein from the green algaOstreococcus lucimarinuscan be modified to produce…
2015
Summary Biosynthesis of asymmetric carotenoids such as α-carotene and lutein in plants and green algae involves the two enzymes lycopene β-cyclase (LCYB) and lycopene e-cyclase (LCYE). The two cyclases are closely related and probably resulted from an ancient gene duplication. While in most plants investigated so far the two cyclases are encoded by separate genes, prasinophyte algae of the order Mamiellales contain a single gene encoding a fusion protein comprised of LCYB, LCYE and a C-terminal light-harvesting complex (LHC) domain. Here we show that the lycopene cyclase fusion protein from Ostreococcus lucimarinus catalyzed the simultaneous formation of α-carotene and β-carotene when heter…
Targeting cells of the immune system: mannosylated HPMA–LMA block-copolymer micelles for targeting of dendritic cells
2016
Background: Successful tumor immunotherapy depends on the induction of strong and sustained tumor antigen-specific immune responses by activated antigen-presenting cells (APCs) such as dendritic cells (DCs). Since nanoparticles have the potential to codeliver tumor-specific antigen and DC-stimulating adjuvant in a DC-targeting manner, we wanted to assess the suitability of mannosylated HPMA-LMA block polymers for immunotherapy. Materials & methods: Fluorescence-labeled block copolymer micelles derived from P(HPMA)-block-P(LMA) copolymers and according statistical copolymers were synthesized via RAFT polymerization, and loaded with the APC activator L18-MDP. Both types of copolymers wer…

Tracheostomy mechanical ventilation in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Clinical features and survival analysis
2012
article i nfo Background: Tracheostomy mechanical ventilation (TMV) is performed in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients with a respiratory failure or when the non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is no longer effective. We evaluated the clinical characteristics and survival of a cohort of tracheostomized ALS patients, followed in a single ALS Clinical Center. Methods: Between 2001 and 2010, 87 out of 279 ALS patients were submitted to TMV. Onset was spinal in 62 and bulbar in 25. After tracheostomy, most patients were followed up through telephone interviews to caregivers. A complete survival analysis could be performed in fifty-two TMV patients. Results: 31.3% ALS patients underwent tra…
Modifications of the spontaneous bioelectric activity and of the after discharge evoked in the amygdala after pallidal injection of kainic acid in th…
1982
Publisher Summary This chapter explains the modifications of the spontaneous bioelectric activity and of the after discharge (AD) evoked in the amygdala after pallidal injection of kainic acid (KA) in the cat. An experiment was conducted in which injection of KA, a neurotoxic drug analog of glutamate, was made into the entopeduncolar nucleus (EN), the equivalent of the medial globus pallidus of primates, to observe the modifications produced on the spontaneous amygdaloid bioelectric activity and on the evoked AD. An AD was evoked in the amygdala by stimulation of the ipsilateral pyriform cortex. The duration of the amygdaloid AD was related to the stimulus parameters. In the same animal, th…
AMYAND’S HERNIA, AN UNKNOWN ENTITY THAT MAY CAUSE SURGEONS DIFFICULTY: OUR EXPERIENCE AND LITERATURE REVIEW
2021
The aim of this case report is to present an uncommon disease, Amyand’s hernia. It is an inguinal hernia containing the appendix in the hernial sac. The authors describe this condition analysing a clinical case and reporting a literal review which points out preoperative and intraoperative management.
