Decoding Children's Social Behavior
2013
We introduce a new problem domain for activity recognition: the analysis of children's social and communicative behaviors based on video and audio data. We specifically target interactions between children aged 1-2 years and an adult. Such interactions arise naturally in the diagnosis and treatment of developmental disorders such as autism. We introduce a new publicly-available dataset containing over 160 sessions of a 3-5 minute child-adult interaction. In each session, the adult examiner followed a semi-structured play interaction protocol which was designed to elicit a broad range of social behaviors. We identify the key technical challenges in analyzing these behaviors, and describe met…
Blended Learning als Spielfeld für Learning Analytics und Educational Data Mining
2020
The state of Business Intelligence : in Finnish enterprises
2015
Business Intelligence (BI) has recently been of interest both in information technology and accounting fields of research. This owes at least partly to how organisations today have increasing amounts of data and information at their disposal and they are attempting to reap benefits and competitive advantage from them. This study focuses on large Finnish enterprises and examines how they are applying business intelligence today. Especially the process nature of transforming data in to knowledge is under scrutiny and how BI is utilized in decision making. The results indicate that organisations are perceiving benefits from utilising their BI processes and while the technological factors are o…
Traditional Enterprise Business Intelligence Software Compared to Software as a Service Business Intelligence
2016
IntroductionBusiness Intelligence is a broad field of study. The major thrust of business intelligence theory analyzes certain factors to make highquality decisions. These factors include customers, competitors, business partners, economic environment and internal operations. Business Intelligence has the power to change the way people work, so that enterprises can compete more effectively and efficiently.A successful business intelligence solutions and successful implementation holds the key to the technological innovations together with the people, processes and culture of an organization to achieve a competitive and profitable BI strategy.Business Intelligence (BI) is the process of acqu…
Explaining Individual and Collective Programming Students’ Behavior by Interpreting a Black-Box Predictive Model
2021
Predicting student performance as early as possible and analysing to which extent initial student behaviour could lead to failure or success is critical in introductory programming (CS1) courses, for allowing prompt intervention in a move towards alleviating their high failure rate. However, in CS1 performance prediction, there is a serious lack of studies that interpret the predictive model’s decisions. In this sense, we designed a long-term study using very fine-grained log-data of 2056 students, collected from the first two weeks of CS1 courses. We extract features that measure how students deal with deadlines, how they fix errors, how much time they spend programming, and so forth. Subs…
An Information Systems Design Product Theory for Software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems
2009
There is relatively little research on software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems (PEMS). Commercial PEMS vary in functionality and effective- ness. Their intended users thus do not know what to ex- pect from PEMS and how to evaluate them. This paper creates an information system design product theory for the class of PEMS that prescribes the meta-requirements, the meta-design, and applicable theories for all products within the class. Meta-requirements and the meta-design are derived from the project estimation and measurement literature, experiences obtained during more than ten years of empirical work in Finnish Software Measurement Association, and a commercially available PEMS.
Experimental conditions for respiration and growth studies of F0 and F1 larval and juvenile European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax
2022
Water parameters in the 2 years before spawning of F0 (08.02.2016-06.03.2018) and during larval and juvenile phase of F1: Larval period until 17.05.2018 (48 dph, 900 dd) and 01.06.2018 (63 dph, ~900 dd) for warm and cold life condition respectively, for the juveniles until 28.09.2018 (180 dph, ~4000 dd) and 12.02.2019 (319 dph, ~5100 dd) for warm and cold conditioned fish respectively. Means ± s.e. over all replicate tanks per condition. Temperature (Temp.), pH (free scale), salinity, oxygen and total alkalinity (TA) were measured weekly in F1 and monthly in F0; sea water (SW) measurements were conducted in 2017 and 2018. Water parameters during larval and early juvenile phase of F0: Larval…
Clinical use of RNA sequencing and oncobox analytics to predict personalized targeted therapeutic efficacy.
2020
e13676 Background: Analysis of mutation profiles in cancer patients does not provide clinical benefits in 80-90% of cases in the US (Marquart et al., 2018). Gene expression analysis potentially complements standard detection of clinically relevant mutations. Methods: 239 adult late-stage cancer patients. RNA gene expression sequencing completed on solid tumor samples using FFPE blocks. Patient mRNA profiles were analyzed using Oncobox bioinformatics, prioritizing target drugs according to their personalized predicted efficacy. Summary reports were provided to oncologists and resulting treatment selection and outcomes were assessed. Results: As of February 2020, feedback was received from p…
Within-session sensitization and between-session habituation: A robust physiological response to repetitive painful heat stimulation
2011
Habituation and sensitization are important behavioural responses to repeated exposure of painful stimuli. Whereas within-session response dynamics to nociceptive stimuli is well characterized, little is known about long-term behaviour due to repetitive nociceptive stimulation. We used a standardized longitudinal heat pain paradigm in 66 healthy participants, 21 patients with chronic low back pain and 22 patients with depression who received daily sessions of 60 suprathreshold heat stimuli (48 °C each) for eight consecutive days. All three groups showed the same response: Repeated painful stimulation over several days resulted in substantially decreased pain ratings to identical painful sti…
Qualitative Evaluation of Emotional Intelligence During Conversation Classes
2014
For centuries the main emphasis in education has been placed upon cognitive abilities. Emotional aspects have long been neglected and on occasion not even considered at all. Nevertheless, it is not only parents at present who have to assume responsibility for shaping emotions of their children. The introduction of emotional intelligence in the school curriculum is seemingly inevitable and promises to bring about a radical change in educating the whole human being. This study examines the impact of emotional intelligence on the first year students’ communicative competence. The author of this article created a training program entitled ‘Activities for Developing Emotional Intelligence in SLA…
