Modeling the relationship between rapid automatized naming and literacy skills across languages varying in orthographic consistency

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to contrast the prominent theoretical explanations of the rapid automatized naming (RAN)-reading relationship across languages varying in orthographic consistency (Chinese, English, and Finnish) and (b) to examine whether the same accounts can explain the RAN-spelling relationship. In total, 304 Grade 4 children (102 Chinese-speaking Taiwanese children, 117 English-speaking Canadian children, and 85 Finnish-speaking children) were assessed on measures of RAN, speed of processing, phonological processing, orthographic processing, reading fluency, and spelling. espanolResumen: En un estudio del que participaron 102 estudiantes universitarios, se comparo la comprension en la lectura de textos expositivos academicos impresos versus en formato de e-book Reader. Se examinaron los efectos del soporte, del conocimiento especifico de dominio previo del lector y la aptitud verbal. Asimismo se indagaron las actitudes de los estudiantes hacia los soportes textuales antes y despues de la experiencia. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar el impacto de una intervención en educación emocional en un grupo de jóvenes con discapacidad intelectual. Los participantes fueron 16 jóvenes (7 mujeres) con discapacidad intelectual ligera o moderada de edades comprendidas entre los 18 y 28 años (M =24; DT = 3,04) integrantes del programa de formación para el empleo UNINCLUV de laUniversitat de València. This paper examines the class formation procedures used in French elementary schools, specially when combination classes (with two grade levels) occur. Principals were interviewed about pupils' assignment criteria and at the same time, the class distributional properties of 70 classes were analysed. The results confirm that pupils are sorted into classrooms based on a combination of individual criteria, including gender and academic achievement, in an effort to keep to the initial mix of children. In this work, the yeast ecology associated with the spontaneous fermentation of Grillo cultivar grapes from 10 vineyards was analyzed from grape harvest till complete consumption of must sugars. The microbiological investigation started with the plate count onto two culture media to distinguish total yeasts (TY) and presumptive Saccharomyces (PS). Yeasts were randomly isolated and identified by a combined genotypic approach consisting of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of 5.8S rRNA gene and 26S rRNA and sequencing of D1/D2 domain of the 26S rRNA gene, which resulted in the recognition of 14 species belonging to 10 genera. The aim of this chapter is to provide the theoretical background for the concept of pronunciation, its pedagogical aspects, and selected factors affecting its acquisition. In the following section an array of definitions of pronunciation will be presented in order to provide a broad perspective. This will be followed by a diachronic overview of approaches to pronunciation teaching and learning, in order to present the pedagogical background. Subsequently, the chapter will address current issues linked to aspects of pronunciation and factors affecting pronunciation acquisition.
