The use of exhalation of ethane and n-pentane in experimental animals as parameters of lipid peroxidation led to an examination of pharmacokinetics of both compounds in rats. When rats were exposed, in a closed desiccator jar chamber, to a wide range of ethane concentrations, linear elimination pharmacokinetics were observed. n-Pentane, when concentrations higher than 100 ppm were applied, displayed saturation kinetics. These were formally explained by action of two competing metabolizing pathways or enzymes. Background Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) increase the morbidity and mortality of surgery in obese patients. High levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) with lung recruitment maneuvers may improve intraoperative respiratory function, but they can also compromise hemodynamics, and the effects on PPCs are uncertain. Our research pursues the production of hypo-oncotic artificial oxygen carriers, based on artificial covalently cross-linked hyperpolymeric mammalian haemoglobins. To evaluate their in vivo efficiency in oxygen delivery to the tissue we developed a small animal model of stepwise isovolaemic blood exchange in anaesthetised, spontaneously breathing rats. Objective: To identify factors associated with tolerance and survival after noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV) and to investigate the influence of NIPPV on lung function in patients with ALS. Methods: NIPPV was offered to 71 patients with ALS in accordance with currently published guidelines. Effects of NIPPV on lung function and factors influencing tolerance and survival after NIPPV were studied. Material and Methods: Forty-four oral breathing children (mean age 10.57 y) underwent orthodontic RME with a Hyrax screw. Forty-four age-matched children (mean age 10.64 y) with nasal physiological breathing and adequate transverse maxillary dimensions served as the control group. SUMMARYThe purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of patients with bronchiolitis admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and to evaluate a national registry of hospitalizations (Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d'Information; PMSI) as a potential source of epidemiological data.
