Improving marine protected area governance through collaboration and co-production.
2020
Marine protected areas (MPAs) socio-ecological effectiveness depends on a number of management and governance elements, among which stakeholder engagement and community support play key roles. Collaborative conservation initiatives that engage stakeholders in action research and knowledge co-production processes can enhance management and governance of MPAs. To design effective strategies aimed at reconciling biodiversity conservation and management of sustainable human uses, it is key to assess how local communities respond to such initiatives and identify the set of contextual factors, institutional, local and individual, potentially affecting these responses. This paper presents the appr…
Opportunities and Hazards of the Internet for Students with Intellectual Disabilities: The Views of Pre-Service and In-Service Teachers
2019
Teachers´ perceptions about the benefits and safety of the Internet for students with intellectual disabilities may affect their willingness to promote online access for this group. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore and compare the views of pre-service and in-service teachers concerning the opportunities and hazards that the Internet has for students with intellectual disabilities. A cross-sectional survey design was conducted with the participation of 582 pre-service and in-service teachers from south-eastern Spain. Findings reveal that teachers have great concerns about the use of the Internet by students with ID, with higher ratings for perceived online risks than for o…
Polyphenols: Bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive components
2019
Abstract Plant phenolics consist of a heterogeneous group of chemical species naturally present in vegetables and commonly alleged to display health benefits. In modern times, the consumption of processed food is increasing within several populations along with the demand for food of enhanced characteristics, such as those including bioactive compounds (e.g., phenolic compounds). On one hand, thermal processing, widely used to increase food safety, has deep impacts on bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive components. On the other hand, non-thermal technologies are interesting alternatives, but additional studies are necessary to understand the biochemistry fundamentals and hence…
Ekonomiczne efekty programu "Rodzina 500 +" w świetle badań budżetów gospodarstw domowych w Polsce
2019
Control of MicroRNA Expression as a New Way for Resveratrol To Deliver Its Beneficial Effects
2012
Grapes produce large amounts of polyphenols. Many of them accumulate in the skin, pulp, and seeds and are consequently found in wine. The health benefits of a moderate consumption of wine have been attributed at least in part to grape's polyphenols. Among them, resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a phytoalexin that stimulates plant cell defenses against infections and also plays protective roles in humans, where it delays cardiovascular alterations and exerts anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Despite numerous studies, the molecular mechanisms of resveratrol action are only partially understood. Given its pleiotropic effects, it was previously suggested that resveratrol protec…
Intra‐ and inter‐instrument reliability of the Actiwatch 4 accelerometer in a mechanical laboratory setting.
2012
Intra- and Inter-Instrument Reliability of the Actiwatch 4 Accelerometer in a Mechanical Laboratory Setting This study aimed to quantify the intra-and inter-instrument reliability of the Actiwatch 4 accelerometer (AW4) in a mechanical setting. Twenty seven AW4 were attached to an isokinetic dynamometer and subjected to angular acceleration for 30 min at 50 deg/sec representing moderate intensity (MPA condition) and 200 deg/sec representing vigorous intensity (VPA condition), with a repeat trial conducted. Reliability was assessed using coefficient of variation (CV), absolute percent error (APE), and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Mean AW4 activity counts displayed acceptable rel…
Impacto social de un gran evento deportivo: el Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1. (Social impact of a major athletic event: The Formula 1 Grand Prix…
2012
The aim of this study was to analyse the residents´ perceptions of the impact of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe after the first three races (2008, 2009 and 2010) in the city of Valencia. Therefore, we surveyed 1,065 residents to analyse their opinion of this event. Results indicate that aspects related to the economic benefits, the image, the athletic prestige, and opening the city up to the world are those which are rated the highest. However, aspects related to job creation, public investment, problems related to noise and traffic, public transportation and security, taking full advantage of and utility of infrastructure, and increase in sports practice and facilities are the worst ra…
Organizational Learning to Leverage Benefits Realization Management; Evidence from a Municipal eHealth Effort
2017
Part 3: Organizational Aspects; International audience; While work with benefits realization requires organizational learning to be effective, emphasis on organizational learning is hard to find in benefits realization studies. To remedy this research gap, we study how organizational learning theory can contribute to improve benefits realization processes. A qualitative approach was used to gain in depth understanding of benefits realization in an ICT healthcare services project. We found that individual learning is present, but organizational learning has not been given explicit attention neither in the project nor in the literature of benefits realization management. We argue that the ind…
Current Evidence on Physiological Activity and Expected Health Effects of Kombucha Fermented Beverage
2013
Consumption of kombucha fermented tea (KT) has always been associated with different health benefits. Many personal experiences and testimonials of KT drinkers are available throughout the world on the ability of KT to protect against a vast number of metabolic and infectious diseases, but very little scientific evidence is available that validates the beneficial effects of KT. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the recent studies in search of experimental confirmation of the numerous KT health-promoting aspects cited previously. Analysis of the literature data is carried out in correspondence to the recent concepts of health protection's requirements. Attention is given to th…
Dynamic Analysis of sectorial Specialization and Agglomeration Economies in the Sicilian Local Labour Systems
2008
This paper examines the spatial dependence among productive specialization, variety of the economic environment and knowledge spillovers. With the aim of identifying localization benefits in a particular area, some aspects of business settling are compared with trends in the development of economic activities and, particularly, with agglomeration process of the firms. On the basis of the model proposed by Ellison and Glaeser (1997) it is possible identifying an “agglomerate space” that is to say a “continuous set of territorial areas specialized in a specific sector one of which, at least, proves to be provided with a level of specialization noticeably exceeding the expected value under the…
