Genetic factors underlie a substantial proportion of individual differences in cognitive functions in humans, including processes related to episodic and working memory. While genetic association studies have proposed several candidate "memory genes", these currently explain only a minor fraction of the phenotypic variance. Here, we performed genome-wide screening on 13 episodic and working memory phenotypes in 1,318 participants of the Berlin Aging Study II aged 60 years or older. The analyses highlight a number of novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with memory performance, including one located in a putative regulatory region of microRNA (miRNA) hsa-mir-138-5p (rs9882…

De novo production of six key grape aroma monoterpenes by a geraniol synthase-engineered S. cerevisiae wine strain

2015

[Background] Monoterpenes are important contributors to grape and wine aroma. Moreover, certain monoterpenes have been shown to display health benefits with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer or hypotensive properties amongst others. The aim of this study was to construct self-aromatizing wine yeasts to overproduce de novo these plant metabolites in wines.

Prove di coltivazione di Camomilla comune (Chamomilla recutita Rausch.) nell’ambiente semiarido mediterraneo.

2009

Hydrogels containing 5-Fluorouracil obtained by γ-irradiation. Synthesis, characterization and in vitro release studies

2001

The functionalization of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) gives rise to a water-soluble copolymer PHEA-GMA (PHG) containing double bonds and ester groups in the side chain. Aqueous solutions of PHG alone or in combination with N,N′ methylenbisacrylamide (BIS) have been exposed to a γ-ray source at different irradiation doses in order to obtain polymeric networks. All samples have been prepared both as water-swellable microparticles and as gel systems. Microparticles have been characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry and swelling measurements in aqueous media mimicking biological fluids. The effect of irradiation dose and BIS presence on rheol…

The functionalization of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) gives rise to a water-soluble photosensitive copolymer PHEA-GMA (PHG). Aqueous solutions of PHG alone or in combination with various concentrations of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate or poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) have been exposed to a source of UV rays at 313 nm in order to obtain polymeric networks. All samples have been prepared both as water-swellable microparticles and as gel systems. Microparticles have been characterised by Fourier transform IR spectrophotometry, dimensional analysis and swelling measurements in aqueous media mimicking biological fluids. In vi…

Stereospecific interaction of bicuculline with specific [3H]strychnine binding to rat spinal cord synaptosomal membranes

1980

The gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonist (+/-)-bicuculline inhibits specific [3H]strychnine binding to postsynaptic glycine receptor sites in rat spinal cord synaptosomal membranes with an inhibition constant of about 5 microM, which is fairly similar to its inhibition constant reported for the GABA receptor. This effect is highly stereospecific, since the affinity of (-)-bicuculline for the specific [3H]strychnine binding sites is more than ten times less than that of the pharmacologically active (+)-bicuculline. Besides an unspecific effect at the glycine receptor, the results could suggest that the glycine and the GABA receptors are located close together in spinal cord membranes, s…

Lebensdekade.

Tau neutrinos in the next decade: from GeV to EeV

2022

Tau neutrinos are the least studied particle in the standard model. This whitepaper discusses the current and expected upcoming status of tau neutrino physics with attention to the broad experimental and theoretical landscape spanning long-baseline, beam-dump, collider, and astrophysical experiments. This whitepaper was prepared as a part of the NuTau2021 Workshop.

Spin texture motion in antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic nanowires

2017

We propose a Hamiltonian dynamics formalism for the current and magnetic field driven dynamics of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domain walls in one dimensional systems. To demonstrate the power of this formalism, we derive Hamilton equations of motion via Poisson brackets based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology, and add dissipative dynamics via the evolution of the energy. We use this approach to study current induced domain wall motion and compute the drift velocity. For the antiferromagnetic case, we show that a nonzero magnetic moment is induced in the domain wall, which indicates that an additional application of a magnetic field would influence the antiferromagnetic do…
