Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Novel Azamacrocyclic LnIII, CuII, FeIII, and SrII Complexes and Conformational Analysis of the Ligands
2008
Hexaalkoxy-substituted azamacrocyclic metal complexes 1 · MXn [MXn = FeCl3, CuCl2, SrCl2, Ln(NO3)3; Ln = La, Pr, Eu, Ho, Er] with various chain lengths were prepared by a convergent approach using 1,2-bisalkoxy-4,5-diamines 3 and 4-alkoxy-pyridine-2,6-dicarbaldehydes 4 as key building blocks for template-assisted cyclocondensation. Metal complexes 1 · MXn were considered as potential metallomesogens. However, differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarizing microscopy of 1 · MXn did not reveal any mesomorphism. The magnetic susceptibility shows deviation from Curie-like behavior. Due to ligand field effects the effective magnetic moments are a function of the temperature. In order t…
Magnetic ordering in an (Fe0.2Cr0.8)1.5[Cr(CN)6] Prussian blue analogue studied with synchrotron radiation based spectroscopies
2018
The appearance of magnetic order in the (Fe0.2Cr0.8)1.5[Cr(CN)6]·15H2O Prussian blue analogue at low temperature has been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. With the help of ligand field multiplet analysis we have been able to identify the oxidation states of the metallic cations present in the sample and their evolution with temperature. Our experiments reveal that the appearance of ferromagnetic order is triggered by the transformation of CrIII cations to CrII high-spin caused by a transfer of electrons from the Fe to the Cr resulting in an increase of the magnetic interactions within the (Cr, Cr) subla…
Efficacy of screen recording in the other-revision of translations: episodic memory and event models
2014
In a 2011 study, Angelone compared the self-revision results of graduate German translation students. Participants documented their original translations using Integrated Problem and Decision Reporting (IPDR) logs (Gile 2004), think-aloud protocols and screen recordings. They then used this documentation to assist self-revision of their translations. Angelone found a significant improvement in error detection overall and in each of six discrete error categories when participants used screen recordings to assist their self-revision. We sought to partially replicate Angelone’s findings concerning the efficacy of screen recording in translation revision. Instead of focusing on self-revision, w…
“It is alive!” Evidence for animacy effects in semantic categorization and lexical decision
2019
AbstractAnimacy is one of the basic semantic features of word meaning and influences perceptual and episodic memory processes. However, evidence that this variable also influences lexicosemantic processing is mixed. As animacy is a semantic variable thought to have evolutionary roots, we first examined its influence in a semantic categorization task that did not make the animacy dimension salient, namely, concrete-abstract categorization. Animates were categorized faster (and more accurately) than inanimates. We then assessed the influence of animacy in two lexical decision experiments. In Experiment 2, we mostly used legal nonwords, whereas in Experiment 3, we varied the context of the non…
Interactions of liposomes and hydrophobically-modified poly-(N-isopropylacrylamides): an attempt to model the cytoskeleton
1993
The interactions of small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) and water-soluble copolymers were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS). The anchoring onto liposomal bilayer membranes of copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide, N-(2-(1-naphthyl)ethyl)-N-n-octadecylacrylamide and or N-[4-(1-pyrenyl)butyl]-N-n-octadecylacrylamide (0.5 mol% of the octadecylacrylamide comonomer) was monitored by non-radiative energy transfer between excited naphthalene and pyrene. The anchoring process occurred on zwitterionic lecithin liposomes and on negatively charged phosphatidic acid liposomes, whether the bilayer was in the crystalline or …
Spectrophotometric evidence for the solubilization site of betalain pigments in membrane biomimetic systems.
2007
The solubilization site of two betalain pigments, namely, betanin and indicaxantin, into l-alpha-dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles was investigated by a spectrophotometric study. Pigment absorbance was monitored by varying phospholipid concentration, at a constant temperature that was varied in a range including the main phase transition temperature (Tm) of the relevant phospholipid bilayer. Maximum betanin absorption increased with the increase of DPPC concentration within the entire temperature range, reaching a plateau. The binding constant (Kb) of the pigment, calculated according to a pseudo-two-phase model, varied with the temper…
Macromolecules in ordered media. 6. Effect of the phospholipidic bilayer composition on poly (2-vinyl pyridine) - liposome association
1997
The intrinsic fluorescence emission of poly (2-vinyl pyridine) has been exploited in order to gain insight into the nature of the interaction with artificial membranes. In this contribution, the study has been focused on the effect of the phospholipid bilayer composition on the association to the polymer. Fluorescence data have been converted into association isotherms and then analyzed in terms of both binding and partition models. Results show that the association is enhanced by the presence of negative charged phospholipid as a constituent of the liposomal membrane. The strong surface density dependence of the polymer-liposome association indicatesthe predominantly electrostatic nature o…
Estimation of the size of liposomes by modified HDC
1991
Internal calibration in modified hydrodynamic chromatography has been realized by the approach of Prieve and Hoysan, i.e. the use of polystyrene monodisperse latexes to evaluate the equivalent capillary radius, R. The value obtained has been used to estimate the average sizes of a variety of liposome samples from egg yolk lecithin.
PNPLA3 rs738409 I748M is associated with steatohepatitis in 434 non-obese subjects with hepatitis C
2015
Summary Background The PNPLA3/Adiponutrin rs738409 C/G single nucleotide polymorphism is associated with the severity of steatosis, steatohepatitis and fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as the severity of steatosis and fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Aim To test in genotype 1(G1)-CHC patients, the putative association between the PNPLA3 variant and histological features of steatohepatitis, as well as their impact on the severity of fibrosis. Methods Four hundred and thirty-four consecutively biopsied Caucasian G1-CHC patients were genotyped for PNPLA3 rs738409, its effect evaluated by using an additive model. Histological features of s…
IL-10 down-regulates T cell activation by antigen-presenting liver sinusoidal endothelial cells through decreased antigen uptake via the mannose rece…
1998
SUMMARYOur study demonstrates that antigen-presenting liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) induce production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) from cloned Th1 CD4+ T cells. We show that LSEC used the mannose receptor for antigen uptake, which further strengthened the role of LSEC as antigen-presenting cell (APC) population in the liver. The ability of LSEC to activate cloned CD4+ T cells antigen-specifically was down-regulated by exogenous prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and by IL-10. We identify two separate mechanisms by which IL-10 down-regulated T cell activation through LSEC. IL-10 decreased the constitutive surface expression of MHC class II as well as of the accessory molecules CD80 and CD86 …
