Beyond the Heisenberg Model: Anisotropic Exchange Interaction between a Cu-Tetraazaporphyrin Monolayer andFe3O4(100)

2013

The exchange coupling of a single spin localized at the central ion of Cu-tetraazaporphyrin on a magnetite(100) surface has been studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Sum rule analysis of the XMCD spectra results in Cu spin and orbital magnetic moments as a function of the applied external field at low temperatures (20 K). The exchange coupling is positive for magnetization direction perpendicular to the surface (ferromagnetic) while it is negative for in-plane magnetization direction (antiferromagnetic). We attribute the anisotropy of the Heisenberg exchange coupling to an orbitally dependent exchange Hamiltonian.

Fate of the false Mott-Hubbard transition in two dimensions

2014

We have studied the impact of non-local electronic correlations at all length scales on the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in the unfrustrated two-dimensional Hubbard model. Combining dynamical vertex approximation, lattice quantum Monte-Carlo and variational cluster approximation, we demonstrate that scattering at long-range fluctuations, i.e., Slater-like paramagnons, opens a spectral gap at weak-to-intermediate coupling -- irrespectively of the preformation of localized or short-ranged magnetic moments. This is the reason, why the two-dimensional Hubbard model is insulating at low enough temperatures for any (finite) interaction and no Mott-Hubbard transition is observed.

Element-specific magnetic properties of mixed 3d−4f metallacrowns

2018

Single molecule magnets comprising rare earth metals are of high interest due to the unquenched orbital moments of the rare earth ions that result in a large energy barrier for magnetization reversal. We investigate the magnetic properties of polynuclear $3d\text{\ensuremath{-}}4f15$-MC-5 metallacrowns using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of powder samples at a temperature of 7 K in a magnetic field of 7 T. The sum rule analysis reveals element-specific spin and orbital moments. The magnetic moments of the $3d$ transition metal Ni(II) ions are coupled antiferromagnetically to each other and contribute only little to the total molecular moment. The spin and orbital moments of the rare ear…

Understanding the Giant Enhancement of Exchange Interaction in Bi2Se3−EuS Heterostructures

2017

A recent experiment indicated that a ferromagnetic EuS film in contact with a topological insulator ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ might show a largely enhanced Curie temperature and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [F. Katmis et al., Nature (London) 533, 513 (2016).]. Through systematic density functional calculations, we demonstrate that in addition to the factor that ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ has a strong spin orbit coupling, the topological surface states are crucial to make these unusual behaviors robust as they hybridize with EuS states and extend rather far into the magnetic layers. The magnetic moments of Eu atoms are nevertheless not much enhanced, unlike what was…

Tailoring the electronic structure of half-metallic Heusler alloys

2009

We investigated element-specific magnetic moments and the spin-resolved unoccupied density of states (DOS) of polycrystalline ${\text{Co}}_{2}\text{Ti}Z$ $(Z=\text{Si},\text{ }\text{Ge},\text{ }\text{Sn},\text{ }\text{Sb})$, ${\text{Co}}_{2}{\text{Mn}}_{x}{\text{Ti}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\text{Si}$ and ${\text{Co}}_{2}{\text{MnGa}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\text{Ge}}_{x}$ Heusler alloys using circular dichroism in x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XMCD). We find a small $(l0.03{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B})$ Ti moment oriented antiparallel and a large $(g3{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B})$ Mn moment oriented parallel to the Co moment of approximately $1{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$ per atom in the investigated compounds. Completely compensated ferrimagnetism and sublattice spin crossing in the half-metallic Heusler compoundMn1.5FeV0.5Al

2017

The Slater-Pauling rule states that $L{2}_{1}$ Heusler compounds with 24 valence electrons never exhibit a total spin magnetic moment. In the case of strongly localized magnetic moments at one of the atoms (here Mn) they will exhibit a fully compensated half-metallic ferrimagnetic state instead, in particular, when symmetry does not allow for antiferromagnetic order. With the aid of magnetic and anomalous Hall effect measurements, it is experimentally demonstrated that ${\mathrm{Mn}}_{1.5}{\mathrm{V}}_{0.5}\mathrm{FeAl}$ follows such a scenario. The ferrimagnetic state is tuned by the composition. A small residual magnetization, which arises due to a slight mismatch of the magnetic moments …

Spins and Magnetic Moments ofK49andK51: Establishing the1/2+and3/2+Level Ordering BeyondN=28

2013

The ground-state spins and magnetic moments of $^{49,51}\mathrm{K}$ have been measured using bunched-beam high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE CERN. For $^{49}\mathrm{K}$ a ground-state spin $I=1/2$ was firmly established. The observed hyperfine structure of $^{51}\mathrm{K}$ requires a spin $Ig1/2$ and strongly suggests $I=3/2$. From its magnetic moment $\ensuremath{\mu}(^{51}\mathrm{K})=+0.5129(22){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}$ a spin-parity ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=3/{2}^{+}$ with a dominant $\ensuremath{\pi}1{d}_{3/2}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ hole configuration was deduced. This establishes for the first time the reinversion of the single-particle levels and illustrates the prominen…

Observational constraints on the LLTB model

2010

We directly compare the concordance LCDM model to the inhomogeneous matter-only alternative represented by LTB void models. To achieve a "democratic" confrontation we explore LLTB models with non-vanishing cosmological constant and perform a global likelihood analysis in the parameter space of cosmological constant and void radius. In our analysis we carefully consider SNe, Hubble constant, CMB and BAO measurements, marginalizing over spectral index, age of the universe and background curvature. We find that the LCDM model is not the only possibility compatible with the observations, and that a matter-only void model is a viable alternative to the concordance model only if the BAO constrain…

Exchange Interactions I: Mechanisms

1996

A most important phenomenon in molecular magnetism is the exchange interaction between magnetic centers. Its relevance as well as the terms and concepts required to its rationalization were stated long ago by physicists working in the quantum-mechanical theory of magnetism (Heisenberg, Dirac, van Vleck, Anderson, Zener, and many others). Depending on the extent of delocalization of the magnetic moments and on the metallic/non-metallic properties of the solid four kinds of exchange coupling were usually distinguished in the physical literature namely direct exchange, superexchange, indirect exchange and itinerant exchange [1]. The relations of these types of couplings are depicted in Figure …

Measurement of the Magnetic Moment of the One-Neutron Halo NucleusB11e

1999

The magnetic moment of ${}^{11}\mathrm{Be}$ ( ${T}_{1/2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}13.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}$) was measured by detecting nuclear magnetic resonance signals in a beryllium crystal lattice. The experimental technique applied to a ${}^{11}{\mathrm{Be}}^{+}$ ion beam from a laser ion source includes in-beam optical polarization, implantation into a metallic single crystal, and observation of rf resonances in the asymmetric angular distribution of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay ( $\ensuremath{\beta}$-NMR). The nuclear magnetic moment $\ensuremath{\mu}{(}^{11}\mathrm{Be})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}1.6816(8…
