Spin polarized electron transport and partial localization of photoelectrons in highly doped photocathodes
2011
The results of experimental and theoretical studies of spin polarized electron transport in semiconductor SL used for photoemitter application are presented. The experimental study is based on the time resolved measurements of electron emission from the cathode after its photoexcitation by fs laser pulse. The response and spin relaxation times have been determined by means of measured time dependent intensity and polarization of electron emission. We also performed theoretical calculations of photocathode pulse response and compared the obtained results with experimental data. Our analysis testifies the presence of partial electron localization in SL. Electron capture by localized states le…
Measurement of the Pu-242(n,gamma) cross section from thermal to 500 keV at the Budapest research reactor and CERN n_TOF-EAR1 facilities
2019
The design and operation of innovative nuclear systems requires a better knowledge of the capture and fission cross sections of the Pu isotopes. For the case of capture on 242Pu, a reduction of the uncertainty in the fast region down to 8-12% is required. Moreover, aiming at improving the evaluation of the fast energy range in terms of average parameters, the OECD NEA High Priority Request List (HPRL) requests high-resolution capture measurements with improved accuracy below 2 keV. The current uncertainties also affect the thermal point, where previous experiments deviate from each other by 20%. A fruitful collaboration betwen JGU Mainz and HZ Dresden-Rossendorf within the EC CHANDA project…
Search for Electron-Capture Delayed Fission in the New Isotope Md244
2020
The electron-capture decay followed by a prompt fission process was searched for in the hitherto unknown most neutron-deficient Md isotope with mass number 244. Alpha decay with $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle energies of 8.73--8.86 MeV and with a half-life of ${0.30}_{\ensuremath{-}0.09}^{+0.19}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}$ was assigned to $^{244}\mathrm{Md}$. No fission event with a similar half-life potentially originating from spontaneous fissioning of the short-lived electron-capture decay daughter $^{244}\mathrm{Fm}$ was observed, which results in an upper limit of 0.14 for the electron-capture branching of $^{244}\mathrm{Md}$. Two groups of fission events with half-lives of ${0.9}_{\ens…
Irradiation facility at the TRIGA Mainz for treatment of liver metastases
2009
Abstract The TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Mainz provides ideal conditions for duplicating BNCT treatment as performed in Pavia, Italy, in 2001 and 2003 [Pinelli, T., Zonta, A., Altieri, S., Barni, S., Braghieri, A., Pedroni, P., Bruschi, P., Chiari, P., Ferrari, C., Fossati, F., Nano, R., Ngnitejeu Tata, S., Prati, U., Ricevuti, G., Roveda, L., Zonta, C., 2002. Neutrinoless double beta decays of 106Cd revisited
2011
Abstract Neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν 2 β ) decays of 106 Cd are studied for the transitions to the ground state, 0 gs + , and 0 + excited states in 106 Pd by using realistic many-body wave functions calculated in the framework of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation and its extensions. Effective, G-matrix-based nuclear forces are used in large single-particle model spaces. Both the β + β + and β + EC channels of the 0 ν 2 β decay are discussed and half-lives are computed. Particular attention is devoted to the study of the detectability of the resonant neutrinoless double electron capture ( R 0 ν ECEC ) process in 106 Cd. The calculations of the present article constitute the thu…
Ordinary muon capture studies for the matrix elements in ββ decay
2018
Precise measurement of $\gamma$-rays following ordinary (non-radiative) capture of negative muons by natural Se, Kr, Cd and Sm, as well as isotopically enriched $^{48}$Ti, $^{76}$Se, $^{82}$Kr, $^{106}$Cd and $^{150}$Sm targets was performed by means of HPGe detectors. Energy and time distributions were investigated and total life time of negative muon in different isotopes was deduced. Detailed analysis of $\gamma$-lines intensity allows to extract relative yield of several daughter nuclei and partial rates of ($\mu$,$\nu$) capture to numerous excited levels of the $^{48}$Sc, $^{76}$As, $^{82}$Br, $^{106}$Ag and $^{150}$Tc isotopes which are considered to be virtual states of an intermedia…
On the use of stacks of fission-like targets for neutron capture experiments
2019
The measurement of neutron induced reactions on unstable isotopes is of interest in many fields, from nuclear energy to astrophysics or applications; in particular transuranic isotopes are essential for the development of innovative nuclear reactors and for the management of the radioactive waste. In such measurements, the quality of the associated radioactive target is crucial for the success of the experiment, but in many cases the geometry, amount of mass and encapsulation of the target are not optimal, leading to limited results. In this work we propose to produce high quality radioactive targets for capture as a stack of thin targets using the techniques usually employed for fission me…
Study of reliability of TLDs for the photon dose mapping in reactor neutron fields for BNCT
2008
Abstract Photon dose measurements in radiation fields having the proper characteristics for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) present several troubles. The thermal neutron flux is very high and produces a significant contribution to the response of most dosimeters. The consistency of photon dose measurements with CaF 2 :Tm and LiF:Mg, Ti thermoluminescent dosimeters has been studied. A method is described for obtaining the gamma dose with TLD-700 and some results are presented to test its reliability.
Neutron generator for BNCT based on high current ECR ion source with gyrotron plasma heating
2015
BNCT development nowadays is constrained by a progress in neutron sources design. Creation of a cheap and compact intense neutron source would significantly simplify trial treatments avoiding use of expensive and complicated nuclear reactors and accelerators. D-D or D-T neutron generator is one of alternative types of such sources for. A so-called high current quasi-gasdynamic ECR ion source with plasma heating by millimeter wave gyrotron radiation is suggested to be used in a scheme of D-D neutron generator in the present work. Ion source of that type was developed in the Institute of Applied Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia). It can produce deuteron ion beam…
Competition between Allowed and First-Forbidden β Decay: The Case of Hg208→Tl208
2020
The β decay of ^{208}Hg into the one-proton hole, one neutron-particle _{81}^{208}Tl_{127} nucleus was investigated at CERN-ISOLDE. Shell-model calculations describe well the level scheme deduced, validating the proton-neutron interactions used, with implications for the whole of the N>126, Z<82 quadrant of neutron-rich nuclei. While both negative and positive parity states with spin 0 and 1 are expected within the Q_{β} window, only three negative parity states are populated directly in the β decay. The data provide a unique test of the competition between allowed Gamow-Teller and Fermi, and first-forbidden β decays, essential for the understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy nuclei in…
